Cleveland: Downtown Aquarium
If I had a nickel.... Developer: New Flats Aquarium is a 'go' Tom Beres Updated: 9/10/2009 5:10:38 PM Posted: 9/10/2009 4:44:37 PM CLEVELAND -- There will be a new aquarium at Nautica in the Flats in summer of 2010....... Some Aquarium boosters were hoping to build a bigger project on or near the lakefront but financing has not been identified. Jackson says that's a worthy conversation, but calls this project one that is do-able and will have immediate benefits, creating jobs and economic development..... Doubtful that W 6th will ever be pedestrian only. There have been proposals to make Frankfurt a pedestrian only street, but we actually got to build something there first. I think the short term and realistic goal is to extend the E 4th "row" accross Prospect towards the arena.

Cleveland: Commuting from the Eastside
Sounds like you are in luck - especially since Ohio has a smoking ban in public places (restaraunts, bars, offices, etc.). As far as suggestions, where do I get started? Hmmmmm.... SPORTS - Cleveland has 3 major sports teams - baseball (Indians), football (Browns) and basketball (Cavs), so there are no shortage of sporting events to attend. You can also head to Lake County for minor league baseball at a cheaper price and, my personal favorite, crawl around to the local high schools on Friday nights and enjoy some of the best HS football in the country. There are also plenty of rec leagues for people your age - my sister and brother-in-law are really into this and have met a lot of new friends by participating in these leagues since they moved here last year from Milwaukee. My sister plays in a volleyball league, my brother-in-law plays in softball and flag football leagues, and they both play in an ultimate frisbee league. OUTDOORS - of course, we have the Lake, which is a benefit over landlocked ATL. You can rent watercraft or go fishing off the pier or enjoy a nice day at the beach (just don't expect anything like South Beach). You can also introduce yourself to one of our greatest assets - the emerald necklace - which is a system of metroparks surrounding the greater cleveland area. With where you live, I would probably check out the North Chagrin Reservation. Great trails for biking, hiking, etc. There are other "outdoorsy" places to explore in the area, like the Towpath Trail, Holden Arboretum, Nelson Ledges and the Cleveland Metro Zoo (one of the best!). OTHER INTERESTING THINGS TO DO - Cleveland has some nationally renowned jewels, like the Museam of Art, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Playhouse Square (biggest theatre district outside NYC), the Westside Market and a PLETHORA of dining options. For your age, I recommend East 4th Street in Downtown as a good night on the town for the two of you. Other pockets of action around the area include Little Italy, Ohio City, Coventry Rd and Cedar-Fairmount (both in Cle Heights), Shaker Square and the Village of Chagrin Falls (quant little town about 15 minutes east of Beachwood). Now, I might get my head bitten off on this board for even suggesting it, but the Beachwood area offers quite a bit to do as well. Legacy Village is technically in Lyndhurst but just on the Beachwood border. Bar Louie is one of my favorite places for lunch on the weekends (I love their po' boys) and they have live music event in the quad quite often. For a good meal, check out Marbella on Chagrin Blvd or, even better, head to their sister restraraunt, Mallorca, which is downtown in the Warehouse District.

Mangini announced that Quinn is the starter for Sunday's opener. No big shocker there.... other than the fact that he did not wait until Sunday morning to make this announcement. Ahhhh.... the power of the odds-makers.

^I think the author has to be realistic about his goals. 1. Sure, developing the port land BEFORE FEB would be ideal... but it is not realistic.... unless we want to wait until I qualify for social security to build the flats back up. 2. This whole blue river concept is not realistic either. Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but I do not believe the Cuyahoga, no matter how "clean", will ever be "blue". The Chicago River has the advantage of flowing in from the lake, making the water look blue. The Cuyahoga's water travels towards the lake and picks up all the river sludge along the way. 3. River Road properties will become appealing only AFTER the FEB is built and can be called a success.

Shaq Vs. is on tonight. He is fighting Oscar De La Hoya. Interesting note - Shaq was announced as "fighting out of Cleveland, Ohio" From what I saw of the fight, Shaq was kind of giving Oscar the business with his jab. "20 reach advantage seems too much to overcome.

+1 on the Karl's recommendation for breakfast. However, if GREASY is really your goal.... just wander on down to the muni lot and you should not have a problem finding what you are looking for. Golic's on W 6th Street is a good place to load up on the brews before heading over to the game, so long as it is not too crowded.

Isn't that particular cake supposed to give the impression of wrapped gifts stacked one on top the other?

Looks like it was a very classy event Dan. I love the view of the E. 9th buildings you had out the window of the banquet hall.

I'm done with my part. BTW, the Obama Presidency Thread has been unlocked and KOOW was nice enough to scrub the first 58 pages of it.

yes, I can taste the difference, but I just never heard of the term "fountain soda" when describing a restaurant soda out of a machine. Maybe that's technically correct and I'm the one unfamiliar with the terminology; but again, going back the the Woolworth's lunch counter reference (I suspect you're too young to remember them--but can't believe mts doesn't--lol ;) ), a la cherry Cokes (before they started bottling that flavor--which tastes like crap by the way), that's what comes to my mind when I hear "fountain soda." I admit it, maybe it's just an age thing... Ooohh, violence on women. That's ALWAYS funny! ::) ^Look who's on the politically correct bandwagon today

So your vision is to have a densely populated, pedestrian friendly Euclid Avenue with the madhouse/homeless shelter, a soon-to-be-ghetto, and a food factory (your words) just one block away?

No you sound like my mom. She hates bottle water and thinks its socially unacceptable for people to walk around with bottled water. I stopped drinking bottled water after my last trip to the dentist of all people. Apparently, bottled water contains none of the chloride that tap water does.... leading to a massive increase in cavities over the past decade or so. Apparently, you CAN buy bottled water with the chloride still in it, but it costs more. Regardless, considering the studies I have seen on this subject that shows tap water is as clean if not cleaner, the whole bottled water rage might just be the biggest marketing scheme in recent US history.

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
I'd use it as I travel to each of the other C's on business and would use the free time to prep.

I don't think so. MayDay showed a shot a couple weeks back of some workers on the Landmark Office Towers (hint, hint - plural), but I believe that was just window cleaning. You're right though.... it definitely needs a bath, but really only on the southern facade. It wouldn't hurt to scrub the whole building, but it is the side that is tilted toward the river and industrial valley that is just covered in soot. Everytime I am crossing the interbelt bridge and take a glance at downtown, that soot really gives me an eyesore.

I thought my wife came up with a good solution to this issue which causes drama during the planning stage of almost every wedding (whether the bride realizes it or not). My wife chose a dress-maker, color and fabric.... but her bridesmaids (all 10 of them in different shapes and sizes) were allowed to pick from several differnet styles - tube tops, spaghetti straps, two pieves, short sleeves, etc.

First, in no way am I advocating for an industrial parkway on Euclid. But I am a practical guy and sometimes I wonder what people's realistic expectations for MidTown are/were when the BRT was built. I understand there was a "vision" (we have seen plenty of those) and we all have our dreams, but was anybody realistically expecting a sliver of urban density from UC to Downtown to sprout up along the corridor, with residential, retail and "UO approved" commercial uses lining Euclid Avenue from CSU to the Clinic? I always contemplated the BRT to encourage build out from UC and Downtown, meaning the density of those neighborhoods would expand another 10-15 blocks or so over the course of a couple decades. I also expected, and we are seeing, some significant infill in UC and the CBD as a direct result of the BRT. I also hope for build out to the north and south along Chester, Payne, Carnegie and Prospect within the same block confines. However, I never realistically expected a magical boom of contruction covering 50 or more blocks that would connect the two areas with true urban neighborhoods. My bottom line is that if a developer wants to build anything that is going to get hip hip hoorays on this board, I would rather it be in UC or the CBD than MidTown. Both of those areas still have a lot of growth potential to them and, at least IMO, building lively neighborhoods in MidTown only causes sprawl within the City itself. For every resident MidTown attracts, it probably takes one away from UC or Downtown. Expansion of desired levels of density into MidTown should be caused by demand and necessity down the road, not pushed as a goal when we still have a lot of work to do on the bookends of the BRT. It's the same philosophy I have with Skyscrapers - build up only when there is not enough room to fill in. Sorry for the rant.... JMHO

Cleveland: National City Bank News & Info
I am really struggling with the decision of whether to move my money. I've always had an account with NCB, even when I lived out-of-state. I guess it's best to wait and see what kind of investment PNC is going to make in the local community, especially the philanthropic gestures NCB was known for, and react accordingly. Pretty sure the owner of a building can call it whatever they want; no?

"How far" is certainly a valid question, but there is no doubt that we do and should change as a society with the continuing influx of immigration over the years/decades/centuries. The phrase "melting pot" comes to mind. We can not and should not expect immigrants to come here and lose their native culture while assimilating into ours. We need to adapt as well. We have a progressive, not stagnant, society forever evolving with each new ingredient tossed into the pot. And we are better off for it. Now, I too do not like super-sensitive political correctness (and the school name changes - if that was really the motivation - falls into that category), but we do need to be sensitive to and reflective of all groups, not just the ones that can trace their roots back to DAR. If that requires a change to past practices, then so be it. On the language issue, I don't argue with those who hold firm that immigrants SHOULD learn English. They certainly should. I do have a bone to pick with the extremists who would make speaking English a REQUIREMENT for citizenship. You know... the ones who think the inscription on the bottom of our beautiful Harbor Lady should read: Give me your tired, your poor, Your English-Speaking, huddled masses yearning to breathe free

I would STRONGLY ENCOURAGE all immigrants to at least speak English at a functional level. However, too many of our core values prohibit any REQUIREMENT (legal or societal) that they do so.

Cleveland: Random Development and News
The TT looks amazing. Although it was painful to see all wrapped up for so long, it was well worth it. This might be my favorite project in Cleveland over the past 15 years. The top part of the tower was much more complicated because there was a SIGNIFICANT amount of repair work, not just cleaning, done up there. I believe the lower portion just received a good scrubbing. Does anyone know whether the lower cornice has been put back up?

Cleveland: Midtown: Development and News
The "density" on that stretch of Euclid was demolished long ago. It already has somewhat of a rural feel. Let's face it, that building was HUGE and a big black eye along the corridor. It looked like something out of Detroit. Any re-use would have been on the Bingham scale... perhaps even bigger. Suppose it was rennovated and residential units were put on the market - how many of you genuinely believe it would have filled up with tenants any time soon? A Tyler Village type concept might have had some promise, but I would rather (at this point in time) that the local developers invest closer to CSU or UC. All that said, I don't particularly care for what they have planned.

Pranks
Middle-aged guy. Jewish. Salesman. He does have a couple of classics - 1970 GTO convertible and 1964 Catalina 2x2 - that he loves more than life itself.... but involving his "babies" in this feud would just be cruel and, given his age, I have to be careful not to send him to the ER with heart palpatations. These two reminded me of a couple subtle and simple pranks I had forgotten about. One would be going to your co-workers car and turning everything on full blast - heat, radio, wipers, etc. Or simply taking time out of one day per week to stand his/her wipers up.... they never notice until they are pulling out of their parking spot. I was notarious for that back in my college days. The other would be to get a sh!t load of red fruit punch or grape juice and use it to fill little cups which are then placed side by side all over the carpet of his/her office. Time consuming though.... both the set up and him/her trying to get access back to the desk.
