  1. Simple misunderstanding among the forumers I think. "Winter 2010" is not clear. It could mean Nov-Dec 2010, which I probably incorrectly presumed.... or it could mean Jan-Feb 2010, which I believe is the impression McCleveland is under. Big difference as far as timetable as the former is just 6 months away and the latter nearly a year and a half.
  2. I was going off of the July 2008 article posted above - A long-awaited wave of culture, homes, shopping and dining will start to flood the University Circle area next spring
  3. I am going to reserve judgment until I better understand how this facility will be designed. It's not like a homeless shelter in terms of causing undesirable street level activity. Plus, as I mentioned upthread, I never really held out much hope for a vibrant residential neighborhood in this particular area (from the E 50's up to E. 72) of the corridor.
  4. That's an old article already posted a few pages back. Comparing it with the rumors floated about yesterday re groundbreaking in Winter 2010, the project was pushed back 1 and 1/2 years because of the crisis. I hope the Marons are still planning on doing it in one-phase, however, I have little hope of MOCA staying a part of the project.
  5. That's a good idea, and yes, we are getting off topic. I respectfully disagree because the two subjects are so interconnected in Cleveland's case.
  6. Are there any models out there that would work? Mainly for the highschools? Some southern states, NC comes to mind, use County school systems. However, the Orange Villages and Beachwoods of this area would never agree to that. The way I see it, the public schools in Cleveland are long gone. And I don't blame the government or Bd of Ed either, its all on the parents IMO who fail to teach their kids to respect authority. I would like to see more efforts like John Hay and Ginn Academy where proven, dedicated students are afforded the opportunity to excel. We also need more places like what we used to have in Clevelaned Hts (Taylor Academy) where the kids who insist on being distractions can be separated from those who genuinely want to learn. Since I don't see much hope in the schools, the focus for right now should be on attracting three types of residents - younger people who don't yet have or want kids, empty nesters, and upper class professionals who can afford and probably would anyways send their kids to places like US, Laurel, HB, Gilmour and Hawken. To do so, Cleveland needs to keep focus on and development in its emerging pocket neighborhoods of downtown, UC, Ohio City and Tremont.

It makes financial sense for him and should not be taken as a statement that he wants to leave. The final year of his contract was for $6.2 mill I believe. His value on the market will probably be at least comparable to that figure. His interests are served by securing a multi-year deal now after a season in which he was a key contributor on a 66 win team and is still young. His value might never be higher. I personally think that bringing back Andy should be priority #1 for Ferry this summer. Unlike Hickson and Jackson, he can play both the 4 and the 5. There will be certain teams that we might be forced to play small ball with and you need a guy like Andy to do that. But more important are two other considerations. First, his hustle and tenacity is infectious and sometimes game-changing. He easily gets us a handful of extra possessions nearly every game in ways that don't show up on stat sheets. And second, nobody has more of a rapport with LBJ in terms of on-court chemistry. Andy knows exactly when and where to set the pick and is uncanny with his cuts to the basket for one of the King's dimes. I say re-sign Andy, bring in McDyess on a 1 yr. deal to start at PF alongside Shaq and then sign Matt Barnes to fill the shoes of Wally/Sasha off the bench. Nothing too fancy, but realistic (unlike the scenarios you might read on other forums) assuming McDyess is willing to accept the bi-annual exception for a shot at a ring. Shaq was our sexy pick-up for the summer and now we need to secure the role players necessary for another run at a title. PG - Williams/Gibson SG - West/Barnes/Kinsey SF - Lebron/Green PF - McDyess/Varejao/Hickson C - Shaq/Z
  8. I don't think that anyone would advocate ignoring the situation. However, PD-type doom and gloom coverage, which does nothing for the morale of the community, is not the answer either. The problem in Greater Cleveland is not so much the government, but the attitude of the people towards their region. We need more advocates. We already have more than enough pessimists.
  9. The article fails to mention (big suprise) that Cleveland is still, by a clear margin, the most densely populated major city in Ohio. And its inner ring suburbs, such as Lakewood, Euclid and Cleveland Heights are among the most dense smaller cities in Ohio. The small geographical size of Cleveland proper (77 sq mi) makes it unfair to compare it to a city the size of Columbus (210 sq mi). In fact, if Cleveland was as large (in terms of land-mass) as Columbus and had the same density, its population would be 1.2 mill. If you simply add the inner-ring suburbs (which would still leave it a far cry from the geographical size of C-bus and which are way more urban than most "booming" US Cities could ever hope to be), the City would be approaching 700,000. The same can be said for Cincinnati, whose population with a comparable land-mass to Columbus would be close to 900,000.
  10. I sometimes wonder if there is some connection between EC's appearance and MTS's disappearance. :| Are we being pranked? EC, probably economic reasons

They are the first three buildings you pass heading east on Mayfield just past Coventry.

I lived on Belmar (N of Mayfield) some years back and I got robbed there... so I agree with your assessment of the area. However, this is a newer building and it might fit my budget. Most of Coventry exceeds my budget. Do you know of any 1br places south of Mayfield one could get for around $500? As mentioned above, a lot of these places need work and I'd be concerned that taking one at the very bottom of the market is just asking for trouble. The one I had before was $575 and tiny, on the wrong side of Mayfield, overrun with mice, and had a toilet that barely worked. Most of the units I looked at before taking that one cost more and looked worse. There are three buildings on the south side of Mayfield immediately to the east of Coventry that might be within your budget. Not sure what the names are though. They are not the nicest, but are spacious and decently maintained. Great location. Some friends of mine rented a 2 bedroom unit in one those buildings I think for $625/mo.
  13. Makes sense. The time between will give them plenty of time to evaluate their options - FEB, Weston, East Ohio, Schofield, Breuer, space that will be created by shifts in office space throughout the CBD. Things should be a lot clearer by then.

Best to stay south of Mayfield Rd. Some of the buildings on the north side of Mayfield itself are comparable to those in the rest of the Coventry area, but I would not rent anywhere past Mayfield going north. Might not be so bad on Coventry itself between Mayfield and Superior, but I would not touch Superior (north of Mayfield) or any of the side streets (north of Mayfield) between Coventry and Superior.

Orlando just answered. Reports are that Alston, Battie and Courtney Lee are headed to NJ for Vince Carter. On second thought, this might be Orlando throwing in the towel on any hopes of resigning Turkoglu, who honestly scares me more than an aged-Vinsanity.

Isn't this one taken from Brooklyn as well? Or is that sign just an advertisement for Chelsea Market.
  17. So, are you saying that a father who kills a man who raped his daughter should be punished the same as a man who stabs an 80 yr old woman without provocation? I guess I just don't see how the justice system can not take mitigating factors into account when assessing the proper punishment. EDIT: jam40jeff, we are working on the same wave length
  18. that was the first thought that came to my mind. the other 2 that jumped out were the halle building... 400 employees could take a large chunk of what is left of that building and really energize it. Second was the ohio gas building. They did just announce that they were removing their last tennants and were ready to renovate the entire building if they got an anchor tennant... that building in such a prime location, with naming rights could be a pretty attractive property (assuming of course it is renovated, right now not so attractive :)) Eaton building. 400 for 400 seems to be a fair trade to me. Whatever happens with the Breuer Tower, am I correct that the Rotunda is officially protected from demolition as a historic landmark? Personally, I never liked the botique hotel idea for this particular building. Not crazy about condos either. That said, I admittedly don't have any great ideas of my own..... except, with those windows, the top floors would be a great location for the return of a Top of the Town type restaraunt.
  19. Wasn't one of the motivating factors of having a "campus" setting so that Eaton could consolidate some R&D in the same location as its Corporate HQs?
  20. I really hope that the CMA holds off on any big announcements over the next year or so..... Imagine the side comments from the PD from now on - "The Cleveland Museaum of Art, at which a horrific rape took place this past summer, is seeking funds to finish its expansion project" "The site lines at Wade lagoon, where prowlers have been known to stalk and rape female graduate students, have been criticized by some" "While many are excited to tour the new wing, some concerns exist as to the safety of the area following the knife-point raping of a CWRU student in broad daylight this past June." I guess they got to find some way to sell papers. :| Re the discussion above, Manhattan had some great success with foot patrols as part of its order maintenance policing policy under Mayor Guiliani. For Cleveland, I see it as a great idea for all of downtown - with focused patrols around Playhouse Square, E 4th, Gateway, North Coast Harbor, the WHD, Public Square and other high traffic areas like in Ohio City near the WSM. It's a police technique that works particularly well with aggressive panhandlers and vagrants. In UC, for many reasons, I see it as a waste of money.
  21. I could be wrong here, but I seem to remember some talk that it would not only be the 400 downtown employees moving to Chagrin Highlands. Eaton has 75,000 employees worldwide.
  22. The law firms that are moving are doing so because they have outgrown their current space... so you can take your "no-growth" argument and shove it pal :behind: No need to get personal here. This is great news and I'm glad to hear the tenants that are moving in are not simply shifty office spaces like some many other companies in downtown Don't be so sensitive champ.... it was all tongue-in-cheek. To be clear, at least some of the firms that are moving are doing so because they have outgrown their current office and the buiding they are in now does not have enough contiguous space to accomodate their needs. Baker Hostetler comes to mind - http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?topic=10658.0
  23. So I am assuming that another vote is needed because the endowment dropped in value? It seemed from the above article last year that proceeding on Phase 2 was already a go.... errrr.... I mean a "hell yes!" The west wing would be nice to have built, but I just really hope nothing happens to the plans for that atrium. That was the key component of this whole expanstion IMO.
  24. I really think you need to come to Cleveland and take a look around before deciding (if that is possible). Ride the proposed RTA routes. Take a look at the neighborhoods around Downtown, Little Italy, University Circle, Euclid, Collinwood, Richmond Hts, Wickliffe and Willougby. Pretty hard to make an informed decision without doing that. Cleveland and Boston have some similarities, but many, many differences. If you can't do so, I strongly recommend the University Circle / Little Italy area (at least to start out). Seems like a safer bet for several reasons. Shorter commute to your job. The "scene" is more laid back, especially the nightlife. Downtown is not for everyone and could be lonely if you don't know anybody. If you do find that you like downtown's nightlife though, access to it from University Circle (via the Healthline or Redline) is very easy. You also would be very close (maybe even walking distance) to the Coventry area where a lot of younger people hang out. Here's are some questions that might help people give you some advice - what type of bars/clubs/etc. do you like? What do you like to do for leisure (biking, museams, fishing, reading in the park, etc.)? And maybe most important, what type of girls/guys do you like (clubers/preppy/grungy-goth/sorority-fraternity/etc.)?

There are some units above the retail on Coventry (the strip - b/t Mayfield and Euclid Hts Blvd) itself, but not many. There are also some units on Coventry north of Mayfield, but that area (the Jets) starts to merge with East Cleveland. Most of the apartments are on Mayfield Road (both east and west of Coventry), Euclid Heights Blvd (mostly west of Coventry, with a few buildings to the east), Hampshire Rd and Lancashire Rd (both to the west of Coventry). You might be able to find a unit in a muti-dwelling home on or just off of Hampshire to the east of Coventry. I would not think that web searches are going to lead you in the right direction for this neighborhood. As the above post recommends, just go there and drive/walk/bike around looking for signs and jotting down #'s. Not sure what you mean by "quality". Nothing is new around there, but the character is off the charts IMO. Several of the units I have been in have servant entrances and other indicia of former glory. No forced air though (of course). I personally recommend the buildings lining the north side of Euclid Heights Blvd heading west away from Coventry Rd. VERY spacious and many have large front porches. Plus, nice buffer zone with the sketchier parts of the neighborhood north of Mayfield Rd.
