Cleveland: University Circle (General): Development and News
Definitely not. More than anything, the problem is that land in Cleveland is in such low demand and is so cheap that owners/tenants can afford to devote large swaths to lawns and single story buildings...The Market is not helping fulfill our design aspirations. While I generally agree, that "problem" is not applicable to THIS particular parcel. It has one of the most prime locations in the entire City and, from all indications, demand was quite high. I think the real issue is this owner wished to turn a profit AND maintain ownership at the same time. The best way to do that was through a lease and he probably just jumped on the highest and most advantageous offer. Also, since his ownership dates back some time, he might be 'grandfathered' with regard to any newer land-use/zoning regs that may apply if title to the land was transferred. All that said, since it is a land lease and not a lease on a building the property owner plans to erect, I would believe that Key can design the building any way they want. Let's just hope Key does the "right thing".

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
I wasn't basing my, admittedly, prejudiced criticism solely on his on-court play. I expect any 19 yr old to have mental lapses on the court. My comments were based on hearing him talk basketball in interviews and what I have heard from a cousin of mine who covers ACC basketball. Like I said, it is a pre-judgment and I certainly hope I am wrong, but that is just my feeling at this point and his play to date has done nothing to quell my concerns.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
I am not sold on Hickson's mental capacity. He might be another Drew Gooden or Leon Williams. He will get better, but I am just not sure he has the brain power to maximize on his immense physical ability. JMO.

Is downtown Cleveland a better place than 10 years ago?
I'd take today's downtown. It is more sophisticated IMO, typified by the contrasting nightlife venues of the two eras - Flats vs. WHD/E 4th. Contra to this point.... and not that I was a fan.... but we did lose the Ballet. However, the increased activity of PHS has more than made up for it. I will admit there was an air of excitement among the "laypersons" during the late 90's that has been lost. Surely, the PD had nothing to do with that. :|

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
First time to 60 wins in franchise history. 2 up on the Lakers and nearly locked into home court throughout the EC playoffs. Home court through the East is essential but I am not sure that we are not better off starting out west should we make it to the finals. The format changes at that point of the playoffs from a 2-2-1-1-1 format to a 2-3-2 format. Suppose start the finals on the road, should we split the first two games, we could close it out here at home and not worry about having to travel again. Of course, if I knew it was going to come down to game 7, I want it here.

Yeah but the top of that parking deck could offer some nice skyline shots for our UO photogs

Cleveland: The Residences at 668 Euclid Avenue
There is momentum accross E 9th for sure, dating back further than E 9 in. Playhouse Sq's continued rebirth, the restoration of the buildings on the north side of Euclid just past 9th that McCleveland has been following. Plus, there was a lot done with that strip in the early-mid 90's when the Gateway district was built up. Without a doubt, 668 was the biggest eyesore from PS to CSU. It's completion is going to do wonders for one of the greatest urban avenues in all of the USA.

CLEVELAND - Welcome to Collinwood, Bratenahl and Detroit-Shoreway
But we had places to be, so off we go - north on East 152nd: You were actually driving north on E 156 in this shot and the ones that follows.

CLEVELAND - Welcome to Collinwood, Bratenahl and Detroit-Shoreway
The tracks run parallel to I-90. That is where I would divide North and South Collinwood. However, except for the E 185 neighborhood and the short streets along the lake north of Lakeshore, you are not going to find many Italians or Eastern Euros.... at least not nowadays.

Sad how some things have changed
Not sure I agree with the "sadly" part of the title. The boarded up buildings are sad but a lot of the re-uses are actually an improvement from years past. For example, the building on W 3 and Lakeside is now offices.... WHD style. The Jillians on Cedar-Fairmount is a key element of that neighborhood IMO.

I was referring strictly to the exterior, but disappointed to hear about the interior. Never been inside myself.

Might be one of my favorite buildings in the USA.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
You are taking too much of a black and white position here. Marc Dann would be proud for sure considering the policies he issued on public records. The Commissioners are allowed to sit in a private room and hear a presentation without violating the Open Meetings Act. Information gathering and fact finding is not "discussion" or "deliberation" as those terms are contemplated by the Sunshine Laws. Further, presentation to a public body by its legal counsel is not a "deliberation." So, the Commissioners can sit in a private room and hear a presentation from FCE and/or MMPI on the advantages of each site. However, the "official" site selection must be voted on in a public meeting. They can also have private discussion with Nance on this issue outside of a public meeting.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
Not sure what law was being broken. Sure, the County "should" share this information with the public, but (and I may be wrong) I believe they were holding these meetings under valid exemptions to the Sunshine laws of this State. If I am wrong, I would like to know specifics.... the PD keeps on vaguely referring to the Sunshine laws but does not cite any authority for its argument. I thought I had posted some statutory cites or text many pages ago. I'm well versed in this, for reasons I'd rather not explain. In short, you can't make decisions at secret meetings and you can't refuse requests for paperwork. There is an exception allowing a private "executive session" to be held regarding the purchase or sale of land. The executive session must begin at a public meeting, which means this exception cannot be used to hold a separate secret meeting. That's never OK. I would venture that this deal goes well beyond a simple land transaction, but only that narrow aspect could legally be discussed in executive session. All other aspects of the deal, like subsidizing a business for 20 years, must be discussed in public. Plus, this land-deal exception applies only to meetings and has zero bearing on a government agency's absolute duty to provide written records upon request. Also, executive session is available only for discussion purposes... no official decision or vote can be made in executive session. What "official" decision has been made outside of a public meeting with regard to the CC/MM? Don't confuse straw votes with officials votes - the PD may not like it, but straw votes are allowed and quite common. Further, there are a multitude of exceptions to the public records law that allows a gov't entity to withhold documents. So requests for paperwork certainly can be refused if there is a valid exemption applies to the paperwork sought. All I am saying is that the PD is being vague and throwing around the Sunshine Laws as if there is no valid legal basis for the so-called secrecy. I would need more specifics to form a solid opinion on who is right and who is wrong in this whole situation.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
I wouldn't bank on that. The consensus among experts remains Curry, but I there are some indication that they are going to go with either side of the line instead. I could definitely see them taking the OT that St. Louis passes on (either Monroe or J. Smith). FWIW, I still take Orakpo even if Curry is still on the board at #5.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
The Browns need to cover their bases and work out J'Nathan Bullock. He is not going to make the NBA as a PF, but at 6-5 240 and a HS football background, he is worth a look. We can't let another Antonio Gates slip out from under our noses.

CLEVELAND - Welcome to Collinwood, Bratenahl and Detroit-Shoreway
The explanation I get from friends who grew up there is that the line between North and South moves, and is determined by what color of people live where. The way they quickly interject "North!" when someone says Collinwood speaks volumes. Well, if that's the case, present day "North" Collinwood would be everything north of Lakeshore from Bratenahl to Euclid, as well as everything east of E 185 that is still part of Cleveland.

Any coincidence that Chuck Barkley was involved in altercations while out drinking in both Cleveland and Milwaukee? One he got sued for and the other he faced criminal charges for throwing a guy out a window.

CLEVELAND - Welcome to Collinwood, Bratenahl and Detroit-Shoreway
Great shots as always Mayday. I often get confused as to what constitutes "North" Collinwood. I always took it to mean north of the highway, but somebody who lives on the lake up there told me that it is only the short streets north of Lakeshore. One of my best friends lives right around the corner from 152/Waterloo on Lucknow. I drive by that area all the time. The crowds the Beachland draws are always impressive. It seems like a real hot spot although I have never been inside. With regard to that one pic of the buildings you say need some TLC, if you would have went around the corner on E 156 you would have seen a sign in the second floor window saying that it is going to be renovated into live/work lofts.

Philadelphia Center City and Old City.
Although I have never lived there, both my mom and dad are from Philly and all my cousins live there (in the NE Philly neighborhood). Center City has really made a great comeback. Philly is a great example of fixing the urban core FIRST and the whole city being better for it.

The Official * I Hate Barkley * Thread
Actually, it is about Barkley and the deep-seeded hate he has for the people here. Lots of issues going back to when he used to play for the Sixers and drink it up in the Flats. It resurfaced in the last few years as there was nobody more hateful of the media hype Lebron got coming into the league than Barkley. If their record wasn't so good, he would just simply bash the Cavs and call them "turrible" for the entire broadcast like he has done in years past. I am sure that TNT got lots of complaints from Clevelanders about Barkley prior to these comments.
