  1. I think people need to have realistic expectations, and most do. Online commentary is not the best sample of actual public perception. All of these things happen on the Vegas Strip, South Beach, Sunset Blvd, etc., but people are still excited to go. It has to be your scene, though.
  2. Bump. We stayed in downtown Harrisburg this past weekend when we did the whole Hershey Park / Chocolate World thing with the kids. We also wen to the Indian Echo Caverns, which I highly recommend. The downtown area really caught me by surprise. Very active, with tons of great restaurants, at least judging by where we chose to eat - Momo's BBQ, The Federal Taphouse, and Fire House - all come with my endorsement, especially Momo's. Harrisburg has done a great job preserving its older buildings. You really get that older city vibe walking around the downtown area.

So.... we went on a little mini family vaca to Hershey/Harrisburg PA this past weekend and when we returned there were four messages on our answering machine for a "Gwendolyn" from SW General Hospital saying that her husband was in the ICU and he wanted her to come to see him. He apparently was in very poor shape. We called SWG back and told them they had the wrong number. They apologized and said they would fix it. Then, last night, we get another call from SWG again for Gwendolyn. My wife tells them once again they have the wrong number and that she told them that last night. They again apologize. Worried that some poor guy is on his death bed and his family doesn't know where he is, my wife spends less than 5 minutes on google and tracks down this lady's contact info. Turns out, two of the numbers had been switched on the hospitals records and that is why they were calling us. It was a "921" number, not a "291" number. We call SWG and tell them of their error last night. Then this morning, we get yet another call from SWG for Gwendolyn. UNBELIEVABLE!
  4. ^I agree, with the exception that they might have commitments for some corporate suites. I could see UH and the Clinic, perhaps some of the other UC institutions, locking up some residential units this far in advance.
  5. What is right now the tallest dive coaster? I'm trying to get an idea of the height for this new ride. As for the Mean Streak, I'm still two years later susceptible to re-aggravating the neck injury I sustained on that S.O.B.
  6. "Victim blaming" ;)

So Week #1 just got really interesting with the opponents QB going on an all liquid diet for the next several weeks and likely out for the opener....
  8. Things must have changed since my club going days. I go to bars on occasion but haven't been to a club in probably well over a decade. Glad to hear they are more peaceful

That is either a misquote or a horrible error by Paul. Either way, I expect a 'correction' soon. There is absolutely no way TT is going to play this season with a decision to leave already announced. Even if that decision has been made out, you don't say it
  10. I believe that is the building used recently (a year or two ago) for a tour of The Nutcracker
  11. A lot of cops have military backgrounds. Veterans are given a huge 'leg up' on civil service entrance exams. That is usually a good thing. Sometimes, especially now with so many young veterans having combat experience, it can be a terrible idea, depending on how the candidate for appointment is dealing with the psychological consequences of war.
  12. Fire started in a penthouse. Unless the floor caved, probably mostly water damage. Good job by the CFD getting it under control so quickly
  13. They are causing 'black flight' from the apartment buildings along Noble Rd. and Green Rd., south of Monticello.
  14. ^Humor?
  15. ^Ah. My bad
  16. Projects near Woodland/Woodhill... Quincy/105... Buckeye/MLK Still very extreme case. I would guess totally unique. If a total of 3 cops a year took a bullet in the course of duty in the City, I would be surprised. The same cop three times over three months.... sheesh. How did he even return to duty so fast after the first two to take a third?
  17. A lot of the southern Asian neighborhoods (other than Vietnamese) are triggered by medical people either going to school or staying here after they are done, and bringing their families. That is a big part of how the Indian communities took root. My understanding is this is happening with the Burmese. There's a lot of political strife back home. Not the case here. These are not 'professionals'. They are refugees, probably not very highly educated. My understanding is the same members of the Jewish community who aided the Russian immigration to the Cleveland community several decades ago have been facilitating this as well.
  18. ^Interesting. We have had a rather large influx from Burma and Bhutan over the past 5 or so years in the 'Village of Bluestone' areas of Cleveland Hts and South Euclid, as well.
  19. Shot 3 times in a couple months? That is waaaaaaay outside the norm. The overwhelmingly vast majority of Cleveland cops won't even be shot at their entire career, let alone shot.
  20. I don't know about the tract, but the street I drove down (I think it was Dayton) was 100% Asian, at least based on people walking down the street, sitting on their porches, playing in the front yard...
  21. I was on my way to downtown Akron earlier this week and took my usual route of exiting Route 8 on Tallmadge Ave, but before I got to Main, the road was closed due to construction and had to weave my way through the side streets off Tallmadge. I was surprised to see what appeared to be a large immigrant population on those streets. Appeared to be southeast Asian, but not sure. I'm talking about the neighborhood to the southeast of the intersection of Tallmadge and Main. Any info on this?
  22. What is this "current popular politically correct agenda"?
  23. Ever hear of Pescht? That was a project which had more potential for Downtown, IMO, than either of the two skyscraper projects you mention. It was proposed by Stark and never went anywhere, partly because of the recession. But it is the main reason so many of us are skeptical of Stark's chest-pounding.

^I agree that Cleveland is mostly flat, but the rise from the City into The Heights is hardly the only change in topography. First off, that rise up to the plateau spans pretty much the entire eastern border of the City and all of Euclid. There are actually a few rises coming out of East Cleveland and Euclid into Cleveland Heights and South Euclid. There also are, as I think you eluded to, multiple valleys, the largest of course being the industrial valley which divides the City into east and west sides. Multiple ravines/creeks/etc are scattered about and then things get very up and down as you head towards the Chagrin River and beyond to the east. The west side does seem to be a little more flat than the east.
  25. Where the Hipsters Are: the Brooklyn of Every State Ohio Tremont (Cleveland) In now-trendy Tremont, perhaps one of the best examples of changing landscape is Prosperity Social Club. The place, which we even called a hipster oasis, is a '30s ballroom with bikes stacked outside and $2 tallboys inside. Also edging in on the bar scene is the Tremont Tap House, which reps 20+ taps and outdoor Monday movie nights. The combination record store-coffeehouse-art gallery is 10 minutes away, but you can’t be a Brooklynite without a vintage feathered hat, so grab one at Eclectic Closet Boutique first. https://www.yahoo.com/travel/the-brooklyn-of-every-state-125773642747.html
