Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
^Really? I am not sure about that. Weed seems to be as popular as ever. Not that weed ever had much to do with teen pregnancy. Coke may have fallen a bit out of style, but worse yet it was replaced by smack. the more telling stat I would think with teen pregnancy and other mischief would be underage drinking.

When did I say to put all faith in Blatt? Or that he is 'the gospel'? I'm giving my own opinions. There's a reason why Miller was offered the most out of our FA's other than James. There is a reason other teams (Denver, for example) were willing to give him even more than we offered him. There's a reason why Jones did not have many, if any, suitors other than us and that we were able to get him for the vet minimum. If my faith is anywhere, it is in the NBA GMs, scouts, and other PROFESSIONAL talent evaluators. It's not that I don't like Jones and his fit for this team. I just don't see where you find consistent minutes for him..... especially now that Delly is back. In fact, it is going to be hard to find Miller consistent minutes. But that is why we signed both of those guys. When their number is called, they are ready. They are both professionals. I'll also say that it is virtually impossible that Miller does not get back in rhythm. It would be unheard of. Players lose a step. They lose their vertical. They lose their strength. But shooters can always shoot. Ask the Cavs players about Byron Scott shooting during practices when he was coach. It is a talent which doesn't really fade away.

Cincinnati Bengals Discussion
It's not unheard of that a team wins and is still mathematically eliminated from the playoffs...... but it is rare, especially with two more games after that to play. If Browns win out they finish 10-6, which is the same record they finished with in 2007 and didn't make the playoffs. There's a chance, but it is not a certainty, like the certainty that the Bengals will get bent over and spanked again in the first round (if they make the playoffs).

Why the drop? It's not from a rise in abortions, which are down as well. I assume it has a lot to do with the sexual education and the availability of protection so many who pissed and moaned about the effects of teen pregnancy fought so hard to keep out of the schools. That battle is now lost. Kids are being more careful.

Cleveland: Crime & Safety Discussion
This is rather broad, non-Cleveland specific comment here, but it came to mind last night. The peak of teen pregnancies in this Country was in the early to mid-90's I do believe. A lot of the insufficient or even poor parenting is the result of all those teen pregnancies IMHO. I think the farther we get away from that peak, the less we are going to see the consequences of poor parenting and lack of guidance. Certainly, poor parenting is something society will never be able to eradicate...... but it can be minimized somewhat by encouraging responsible sexual practices. Not abstinence. Kids will be kids. Might be because it is so easy to steal. Car thieves target certain cars which are either easy to steal or have high value in the scrap market.

I don't disagree. I just don't buy into the Mike Miller does have it anymore hype. He played very well for Memphis just last year. And, putting aside his shooting percentage, he has been playing well for us this year. He defends, he rebounds, he whips the ball around, he is in the right spot. His shot just wasn't falling for whatever reason. If LeBron was in a slump, would you be pining for Jones to take his spot? I know that is extreme, but the body of work and PROVEN talent/ability can't be ignored. It's just too early for me. I'm hardly foreclosing on the possibility.

Yes, Kiel was very highly recruited. But he first committed and enrolled at Notre Dame. He transferred to Cincy. Recruitment rankings are certainly not a science. AJ Hawk was a 3-star no-name. Malcolm Jenkins was a 2-star recruit. OSU has had several 5-star recruits who didn't live up the hype. OSU passed on several Ohio kids (e.g. Tyrell Sutton, Ryan Brewer) who turned out to be really special. But the fact that it is not a science does not mean that you want to ignore the rankings. They are right more than they are wrong. Less recent success? Define that. In recruiting? We have been in the top 10 nearly every year I can recall, and that would include the Cooper and Tressell eras. As for on-the-field success, I don't know how you can argue with their body of work. There really have only been about 2 years out of the last 20 when OSU was not considered and played like an elite team.

Veeeery limited sample size. Compare the two players over the course of their careers and it really isn't even close.

Nobody up here views Johnny as our 'savior.' It is exciting to have him and the national attention is...... well you wouldn't really understand. But the whole 'savior of the franchise' thingy is more than a bit overblown. This isn't LeBron and 2003, or even LeBron and 2014. Either way, if I was Marvin I would keep my space from the sidelines during special teams plays when players sometimes...... ummmmmm...... deviate from their running lanes. Hell.... his own player taught him that lesson during the whooping the Browns gave them earlier this year. http://thebiglead.com/2014/11/06/marvin-lewis-got-run-the-eff-over-by-his-own-player-on-a-punt-return/

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
I don't know how many of you are old enough to have watched the 'Showtime' Lakers in the 80's, but last night (especially the 3rd quarter) reminded me of that team. We ran the Nets right out of the gym and they were helpless to stop it. Although he has had some great games to date, LeBron looked like he really had an extra bounce in his step last night. Moreso than I have seen as of yet this year. He seems to be really starting to enjoy playing with all of his new 'toys'..... the type of players who let him play the way he wants to play, which is fast and explosive. Just a second there, Professor. I wouldn't say he has been 'inserted' into the lineup. He is filling in for the time being, as the Cavs envisioned he would do well when his number was called. I suspect they still go back to the Miller when he is cleared. Although he started the season in a slump, Miller still spreads the defense out. Nobody is going to leave him open for a 3, I don't care what his current percentage is. The reason they stick with Miller is because of his high b-ball IQ and ability to impact the game with his passing and rebounding. Jones is much more of a one-dimensional player and kinda always has been, even in his prime with Indy. We are going to use him during the season, for sure, as the injury bug is bound to bite. I doubt he ever becomes part of the regular rotation. I could be wrong. If he keeps playing like he did last night, he has one helluva argument. I like the guy. Great guy. Our kids go to the same school.

Oh, there can be a Detroit. Think about the Ivy League schools which pretty much dominated the landscape at the turn of the 20th Century. Or how about Army and Navy? There were times when schools like Minnesota and GT were considered elite. Today, college football success is based almost entirely on recruiting. It is why it lacks the parity of the NFL. You can take a look at the recruiting rankings each year. When was the last time Cincy had a top 100 recruit? Whereas any year OSU does not have 5 of the top 100 players is generally considered a disappointment. And even though Michigan sucks right now beyond belief, it still recruits very well. The top tier programs hog all the top recruits and the consequences of that dynamic are obvious. Schools with second tier recruits can 'pop' every now and then based on some luck and having a really solid upper class which, while unheralded when it came in, really developed in the 3-4 years of playing college ball together. But year over year success of being elite is nearly impossible for any program outside of the ones I listed above. It's just the way it is.

I get what you are saying, but I would probably reserve that kind of category for a team like Oregon. It's a poor comparison model, but we are on UO I suppose. For the record, I hope Cincy whoops VT. I always root for the Ohio teams.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
^^Why? Because you think Austin and Seattle are 'cool'? We'll split the difference and say Dayton. Seattle and Austin might be considered second tier cities.... with Seattle a borderline first tier city. ^I'm not comparing the schools at all...... only the football programs...... not even the entire athletic department. Just football.

That was me. And I wasn't saying that they are on par with the 1AA programs, or whatever they are called now. The point was that Div I isn't really a single Division. There are the top tier teams and there is everyone else. That's the way it always has been and probably the way it always will be. Cincy is not a top tier team. OSU is a top tier team. So the point was that Cincy might as well be IAA when trying to compare it to OSU. It's like trying to compare Chicago and Cheyenne. Both are cities. But you would never ever place them in the same category.

Any truth to the rumor that Johnny was late to the game yesterday? Sticking with Hoyer this past week might've had as much to do with Pettine thinking that Johnny still needs to grow up and earn it as it did with his confidence in Hoyer.

Cleveland Cavs Discussion
^Joe Johnson is recovering from the flu as well, but has not been ruled out. Speaking of Centers, there are some rumors today that the Cavs are targeting Kosta Koufos, who currently is the backup in Memphis. Of course, as I've said before, when you hear an NBA rumor, 95% of the time it is a deal which has already been discussed and rejected. I wouldn't be surprised at all if we made a run at him, but my guess is Memphis was demanding waaaaay too much.

Laughable. Programs like Wisconsin, Iowa, Penn State, etc. have trouble going blow for blow with OSU year in year out. Programs don't normally rise out of mediocrity to become one of the elite....... Oregon perhaps being the one example I can think of for some truly unique purposes (Nike). Sometimes elite programs fall down to mediocrity for a few years (Alabama, for instance, and probably what Michigan is experiencing right now), but the general landscape of the true powerhouses remains the same. The following are the powerhouse programs.... the truly elite programs over the years regardless of how well they are doing at any given moment.... Oklahoma Michigan Ohio State Alabama Notre Dame Nebraska USC Texas Penn State Tennessee LSU Georgia Auburn Miami Florida State Florida Then there is a bit of a separation between them and the second tier, which would include teams like Wisconsin, UCLA, Clemson, Iowa, Michigan St., Texas A&M, Washington, Stanford, Colorado, Arkansas, Ole Miss, etc. After that there are a lot of quality programs, such as Cincy and East Carolina, but no one would put them in the same category as the second tier programs, let alone the truly elite programs.

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
It's just a flat out better, waaaaaaaay more prestigious program. No offense, but there is absolutely no comparison. Cincy might as well be Div-1AA. That's just the way it is and always will be. That's how college football is. OSU will never lose a desired recruit to Cincy. Never. There are the 'big boys' and there is everyone else. There is no parity. This isn't the NFL. Sure, if Cincy played OSU 10 times, they might sneak in a win or two. 1AA teams beat the big boys every now and again. Hell, NJIT just beat Michigan this week in basketball. Ummmmm..... did you not catch the score of the TCU game? 55-3

I'm done with Hoyer as the starter. Done. Even if he wasn't playing so bad right now and crumbling under the pressure, he just is not a good fit with Gordon. Josh needs a QB that can zip the ball into him in stride so that he can do what he does best. He is not Jerry Rice. His hands are not 'elite'. He's got a lot of work to do on route-running. But he is as good as it gets once you get him the ball in a spot where he can make a play and Hoyer can't seem to do that. It's like having a world-class running back with an O-Line that is best at pass-blocking. I don't know that Johnny is the answer either, but I think the zip he puts on the ball would help.

The problem with out of conference scheduling is that it is set years in advance. The VT game was scheduled more than 5 years ago when it was a better program.

^I think it was termed 'civil disobedience'..... the Cliven Bundy standoff. The Ferguson protesters should have taken a cue and brought horses, flags, and guns instead of signs.
