  1. Wow I had no idea Canton had all this. Its amazing that even though I have lived in Cleveland all my life the most I have seen of Canton is Foster Stadium.

Thanks for the links. Its a shame that this memorial is not in a more prominent spot. This man really had his hands in everything in Cleveland.

I was out this past weekend showing my architect buddy the city. The day was beautiful and I came away with some amazing pictures. There are also some great interior shots. Some may not realize this but Cleveland has some amazing interior spaces in many of the downtown buildings. Unfortunately I can't take pictures of the bank lobbies. They are just incredible especially the Hunnington Bank Lobby. Apparently Jesus Christ super star bought his own brick in front of the old stone church! This is a picture of a parking lot in the Warehouse district. You can see the old alley way running through it. Goosh this area of downtown really disappoints me!! This is one of my favorite warehouse buildings. Its where the RTA is housed. For such a beautiful day I felt the Settler's Landing Park lacked vibrancy.. Ahh the beginnings of the flats-east bank project! This is so cool! I wonder who this guy is. This is a memorial to him near the Detroit Superior bridge The beautiful interior of the Renaissance. Its amazing I had no difficulties walking into the lobby. Now the inside of Towercity.. This design seems to popular in a lot of Cleveland buildings. I have seen it in some of the playhouse square theaters. This ain't good. It looks like water damage.. Soldiers and Sailors Monument: Here is a new condo currently being developed. What an amazing location! I have no idea why there is pig infront of the May Company bldg! I love this building Would this be considered an Art Modern Building? Here are a number of pictures of the Cleveland Arcades. For some who may not know, Cleveland has three wonderful arcades. I actually wonder if it used to have more. Unfortunately this arcade is almost completely empty.. Love the terracotta! Here is the arcades directly next to the terracotta one... Damn I forgot to take pictures of the three and grandest arcade. Hopefully I will get it another time. Here are some pictures of the gateway district. I noticed there are a lot of mid-rise terracotta buildings. It almost seems fitting to called this the terracotta historical district. Overall I love the architecture of the neighborhood but I feel that it is significantly underutilized. Especially the areas south of Prospect Avenue by the Armory Building. This district has the potential to be an amazing downtown district with East 4th and Jacobs Field on the west, Cleveland State and the Playhouse Square on the East. Here is a redevelopment project. Is this going to be condos? Part of what makes the Gateway district so interesting are corner intersections like this one.. How in the world did this building get converted into a parking garage?!! The Armory Building... This is the most under-utilized part of the neighborhood... This building is going to lost very soon.. I still wonder if the Rotunda is ever going to be redeveloped...
  4. Great pics.... I think I have some very similar to this ;)
  5. Thanks for the pictures I really enjoyed them!
  6. Are the pictures of the D.C. neighborhood in the Capital Hill neighborhood?
  7. Where is the uptown neighborhood located?
  8. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3545/3535026742_1be0ba5661_o.jpg What type of architectural style is this. Its not Georgian is it?
  9. I'm actually head up to D.C. this weekend. I'm planning on taking an afternoon tour of the city. Are their any other neighborhoods I should check out in D.C?
  10. Wait is there still a large Hungarian population in the neighborhood?
  11. Wow I am so impressed that Columbus still has a Hungarian neighborhood still intact. I know that the Cleveland area has the largest concentration of Hungarians outside of Budapest but the neighborhood is not intact. I believe it is somewhere on the east side in the Buckeye neighborhood. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong. But yea great post!
  12. I am so glad to see a neighborhood thread. I've actually never seen this neighborhood and am surprised of how intact it still is. My guess is that the Slovenian influence is keeping the commercial on St. Clair intact. Great post
  13. There are also projects located near St. Malachi north of the Shoreway. They have a great view of the lake.
  14. Is the warehouse district south of Downtown?

I know the mood about the post it pretty negative, but you do have to keep in mind I did not get around to taking pictures of the nicer sections of Lorain including its residential neighborhood by the lake and downtown.

Wow there is so many brick streets still remaining in the city.

Wow that was a great photo thread. What are the organizations dedicated to preserving and reviving the city core?

Well if I do a thread about Middletown it sounds like a good idea to do one on Lorain. Come to think about it these cities are very similar. They are based on heavy industrial, they are close in size and they are both struggling economicaly. Here is a long set of the residential in the city: Overall I was pleased to see much of the residential still intact. I had a mental image that the city's residential was much worst. In many ways the city's residential reminds of Cleveland West side. Here is one of the MANY churches in Lorain. Here is what is left of a commercial corridor. Overall I was very disappointed with the city's commercial. So much of it (especially historical commercial buildings) have been lost and most of the remaining commercial is very gritty. No doubt about it; Here is a beautiful historic building. I don't remember its name... Great juxtaposition here! More Churches! The steel mills are still going.. Here is an empty mall. This is what happens eventually to suburban malls. Its really ugly. Here are some of the low income housing: I really like this park. Its called Lakeview.

I feel that Middletown has been doing too much to compete with other suburban development. How can you compete with places like West Chester and Mason? They have focused so much of there new development in strip mall commerical, new housing, and a new hospital. This has left many of the older neighborhoods without much redevelopment founding. Much of their newer suburban development (aka the Middletown mall is closing). I really think they need to focus on the urban assets they have.

    I agree!!
  22. Middletown So I finally took a comprehensive tour of downtown Middletown. This has been a long time coming since I am only 30 minutes away from the city. In general Middletown is a struggling industrial city but this was not always the case as the city was booming until the 60s and 70s. Middletown was even prominent enough to support a full Opera Company and construct a state of the art Opera House. It also has some incredible intact mansions. (unfortunately I do not have any photos of these mansions). During the past couple of decades much of Middletown's emphasis has been on the eastside of town with primarily suburban development. This is because I-75 borders the city on the east end. The city recently built a multi-million dollar hospital near the I-75 interchange. Unfortunately Middletown's heavy emphasis on suburban development has left less money available for struggling inner city neighborhoods and resulted in the majority of the middle and upper class of the city residing in post 60/70s development. They also are having issues maintaining the large amounts of annexed land. Downtown Middletown runs mainly along Central Avenue for about a mile. This New Orleans restaurant was actually opened by a Katrina Victim: I love this building: As you can see I am moving away from the center of Downtown I'm guessing the top floors are unoccupied... Fortunately there is a decent amount of historical commercial buildings still remaining in Downtown Middletown. I really hope they can be saved. Not the most attractive building but certainly an important organization for the community.. Ok you'll love the next photo There are more residential usages (or at least they used to be residential) the further you get from the downtown core. Now I am heading back to the center of downtown Here is some disappointing commercial This needs a little help.. It would be sad to lose these buildings: Central Downtwon Middletown This building can be considered the centerpiece of Downtown Middletown (this is the smaller building in the foreground). Its a stained Glass Company. The city offered the building to them at an extremely cheap price and the company remodeled it. Its even more amazing inside with incredible stained glass artwork and an explanation on the history of Stained Glass as an artform. The community is trying to make downtown Middletown an arts districts. Hence the "Got Art" sign below. Hopefully this will take off.. This is called Port Middletown Park This is a mural of the old canal which ran right by this park. There are actually a number of murals in Middletown. There is even a stage in the park (although I wish it was larger so it could hold better acts) The Manchester. This place is amazing. Apparently this hotel is run at a loss but it is still in business since the owner has enough money to keep it afloat. There is a really nice ballroom on the second floor. In the foreground is Donham Plaza where large communities events are held. It is rather dead in the winter. In the background is city hall. Now some photos from the abandoned parking lot. This basically closed when the downtown mall came down. Yes; there was a mall in downtown Middletown. It covered a few blocks on Central Street. The old Sorg Paper Mill Here is Miami Middletown's downtown building. I wish it was more present of the street. The other Art Deco building in Middletown: Here's a cool Mural Not the prettiest sight in downtown Sorg Oprah House This is probably the best downtown historic block in the city: Ok I lied about not posting any mansions. Here's the only one I got a decent picture of
  23. I live in Fort Wayne (Fort Mundane), Indiana, which used to be headquarters for Lincoln Financial. Through the 90s I worked there in IT. I got to travel around to some of Lincoln's regional marketing offices with a team setting up hardware and software and training users. I had been to Pittsburgh before, and when they posted it on the list I was quick to call dibs. I didn't take any photos on that trip, but I posted some from earlier and later trips on the forums some time back. If you'd like to see them, they're here. Cool Thanks a lot for the link.
  24. Wow I've never seen anything like this before. Hopefully I'll make it to Miami from spring break. I've always wanted to visit.
