Cincinnati: Downtown: Heritage Bank Center
Maybe if they could get a state of the art facility on campus, but moving UC's arena off campus would be a mistake. I don't see how they'd get an 17k+ arena on campus. Plus, UC struggles to get 10,000 to games with the exception of bigger name teams, so playing in a 17k seat arena will give it an empty feeling. Maybe bringing them downtown would help increase attendance make it more of a destination instead of more geared towards students. Helping improve the image of the program and attract bigger name recruits. They used to play downtown and IIRC attendance wasn't exactly stellar. Not saying it couldn't be now but IMO it should remain on campus.

Have there been any announcements/rumors on retail at the GE section of the Banks or is it still way too early for that?

Cincinnati: 2015 MLB All-Star Game
I'm downtown everyday and that was the most people I've ever seen walking the streets. All the way up to 7th street though I'm sure it extended beyond that. I was amazed at how many people were downtown especially considering the weather. Also keep in mind that Reds has a strong regional following. Reds fans exist in Indianapolis, Columbus, West Virginia, Tennessee, etc. Just because they are wearing a Reds shirt doesn't mean they are local. And even local spending is great. Money pouring in from those in West Chester, Mason, etc is good for the local economy.

It gets pretty crowded at rush hour even without games.

I assume the streetcar will help immensely, but I personally think that location sucks. There isn't much foot traffic unless you are specifically going to TKILTBAG and it feels like you are walking along a highway when you walk by it. edit: I guess it does get good foot traffic for people walking to/from Reds games but I wonder if most walk by TKILTBAG going to/from Reds games.

Self-cleaning? Is that like the Vapoorizer?

I'm not sure I quite understand what it is. How is it much different than any other public restroom? Is it cleaner?

Duke also only has a total enrollment of less than 15,000. I don't think it's a deal breaker, but I would have preferred to keep it close to current capacity. But I also understand that wasn't possible if they were going to upgrade the seating and add all the other amenities. I wonder if the future Shoe will be able to host NCAA tournament games?

Ahh, yes, sorry. I was thinking that was freedom way in the picture and didn't look at it close enough...

I have a feeling it is a permanent "classy" replacement to the busted temporary fencing they put up during baseball season to keep people from jaywalking. The sidewalk is on the other side. I wish they'd make that street a pedestrian area. Do they use that street for deliveries? Any through traffic could just go up to 2nd street so why is that street really needed?

Shows whats why money needs to be out of politics. Because they donated a certain amount to Young they expect to get everything handed to them regardless of what makes sense.

"It looks like these ordinances are dead. Councilman Wendell Young is pulling his support." Looks like the petty politics finally got to Young. Sounds like Young did the right thing.

They don't practice in the Shoe now when it opens up completely so I'm not sure why they would care about having practice courts in the future.

I am referring to the existing wood accordion chairs. The current lower level gets gutted. Probably did not read John's post close enough. Anyway hope this gets officially approved. Anyone want to take bets on where UC would play 1 season during construction? Cincinnati Gardens. I highly doubt they will play there. They looked at the Gardens to keep options open but I have to believe it will be played at US Bank or the NKU arena.

Thanks for the breakdown! Thanks. Seems to me the turnkey would be the right choice here. The turnkey option is clearly the better option. It's just politics getting in the way. The turnkey option allows for the workers to unionize, so they're both union contracts. The difference is that with the management option, ATU operators for Metro will get to keep their seniority and heightened pay, which is well earned and deserved, by not a reflection on their skills as a streetcar operator. This is why it's the more expensive option. They will need to be trained (at another added expense) on how to drive a streetcar. The turnkey option will hire trained streetcar operators to start the system and will allow for any Metro drivers who want to drive the streetcar to get certified and apply. They will lose their seniority, by that's only fair when you leave one job and go to another where you need to be trained. As streetcar operators they will be allowed to unionize and get all of the same benefits as Metro employees.

Isn't the sidewalk also graded where the crosswalk is? The curb seems like it's 18+ inches high where there isn't a crosswalk. The positioning didn't make sense to me either. I mostly agree on the traffic, though in the hours during a Reds game and at 5pm on weekdays it gets heavy traffic. I still wish they would have made it one lane each way. Seems like a lot of road to cross in the middle of a park.

I was wondering the same thing (although I am on vacation in Portland soooo). Saw a story about Cranley maybe budging on the operating budget a little to get union workers? Is this related to the difference between using SORTA and the private company? Maybe I don't understand all the details (very likely) but I'm not sure why the city should pay extra just to have union workers. Also, I didn't think those workers had any streetcar experience whereas the cheaper company did. To me it seemed like a no-brainer and a great time for streetcar supporters to say that we do care about spending....Sorry if this is dredging up stuff already discussed.

Holy Grail is more of a bar than a family restaurant, so I don't think you can say they make a lot of money serving families. I just think that's what they're gunning for with their very benign Italian concept. Maybe I should have just said they make a LOT of money...Until the Banks is fully built out I can't really blame anyone for going after the family/Reds game market. There isn't quite enough activity yet on non-Reds days. GE is a great start in the right direction.

But the design board really doesn't have any power, do they? It didn't seem to change much with the GE building.
