Well, this really sucks. I'm not a big racing fan, but I did enjoy attending the race here. It had to be a decent boost to the economy here as well. Hopefully we will see the series return next year. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/print?id=3259364&type=story After 12 years of conflict, IRL and Champ Car merge -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Associated Press Indy Car racing has finally gotten together. The Indy Racing League and the Champ Car World Series signed a deal Friday to unify the two American open-wheel circuits, bringing them under the umbrella of the IRL. [sNIP!]

^^ You avoid "Dead Man's Exit" that way, but then you end up "Dead Man's Roundabout". heh Can't win. ;)

^^ I actually rode my bike down that hill and I thought I was going to die! When the old LTV warehouses were still there, I used to ride my bike through them. It was really rather surreal. There were three warehouses the size of football fields back to back to back with doors opening into eachother that I could ride through. They were pretty much stripped of everyone, but the lights were still on?? I used to use that route as a shortcut to ride to Independence when I worked down that way. I really meant to take photos before they started tearing things down, but I waited too long and I am still kicking myself. I took some other photos a couple years ago on the existing side that I should post sometime though.
  5. I actually worked in the new Owens-Corning building for a few months in 2000 before I moved to Cleveland. Let me tell you-- I got a damned workout. I don't remember the particulars, but the building is like 3-4 stories tall and about a quarter mile long. When you had to go from one end to the other it was hike. Not to mention they had no structured parking, so you had to walk quite a distance to get into the building. I just can't understand why a company would want to be laid out like that when they could be vertical-- elevators/stairs make everything much closer together.
  6. I can confirm that Dean's Hotdogs is infact open. Just drove past there on the way home and there were several people inside. Believe it or not, the Burger King parking lot was perhaps 2% filled when I went past.....mostly thanks to a fedex truck. heh
  7. ^^ It would be really great if they could get some "world class signage" in there. :-D That Burger King is a real joke. I almost never see anyone in there and I drive by it everytime I turn onto W. 76th. Hopefully it will join Popeyes and the hotdog joint and get boarded up. That would be a real nice block of land to turn into something. I can't wait till the Capital Theatre is renovated. I see myself going there at least every other week if not more often.
  8. That building is gorgeous.....I have almost gotten in several accidents at Cedar/Carnegie and MLK while staring at it. It better not come down.

As someone who lived in Tremont for seven years (2001-2008), I can firmly say that "cleveland" is full of crap. The area has only improved since I have been there and new housing is still coming online. I frankly have no clue what streets you could possibly be talking about looking like Ukraine....oh, I think I know what you are talking about now....St. Theodosius? :-P

^ I was just in the Steelyard Commons Walmart for the first (and possibly last time) this past Saturday afternoon. It was absolutely gigantic-- unbelievably large. Their grocery section is very-- larger than your typical Giant Eagle. They did have "fresh" foods there as well. Who knows how fresh, but they had they had everything there.
  11. I just saw this article about the forclousure crisis....this time focusing on Shaker Heights.... ----------------------------------------- US mortgage crisis creates ghost town Jan 27 02:31 PM US/Eastern <url>http://www.breitbart.com/print.php?id=080127183107.ahcwfxrz&show_article=1</url> The streets are empty. Trash rustles down the road past rusted barbecues, abandoned furniture, sagging homes and gardens turned to weed. This is Shaker Heights, a suburb of Cleveland and a town ravaged by the subprime mortgage crisis roiling the United States. [sNIP!]

I am not sure if I am remembering this correctly, but doesn't Walmart have some soft of deal with the developer to be the only grocer in the complex? I know when Steelyard was first being proposed, the city only wanted a regular Walmart (non-super) and a Giant Eagle. Walmart said they would walk unless they could sell groceries....that is when Jane went behind council and worked out a deal with Walmart so they could do a Super and suddenly the whole site was back on track.

I am 30, but will be 31 in under two months, so I answered 31-35.
  14. ^ I don't share your sense of humor.
  15. Correct me if I am wrong, but I am relatively certain the talk about the shoreway started in 2002 and Battery Park around 2004. I do believe the W. 73rd intersection was always part of the deal with Battery Park. I don't think the scale of the larger buildings would work without the direct access to the Shoreway. They certainly talked up the conversion quite a bit during the sales process...oh, and while I am on the subject, they did mention numerous times that Jason Wright had purchased a house in the development. ;) I think I am going to contact Matt Zone and find out who I need to write to at ODOT to let them know how I feel about. Maybe I can do a flyer and pass it around all the neighboors so they can do the same. I'll keep you guys updated.
  16. I was driving down W. 25th yesterday and saw a large number of folks rallying outside of Kan Zaman with "Free Palestine" signs and other slogans. Guess it was the tail end of this event.... [sNIP!]
  17. ^ They are fairly reasonable. We pay $97/month for one of the seperated townhomes. Can't speak for the connected ones, but they probably aren't too much more.
  18. No....it is not good. While the article mentioned developers who have been millions into the area, it failed to mention the people who have bought into the neighborhood. If that intersection isn't there at w73rd, the likely hood that the rest of BP is built is severely threatened and that would affect the prices of our homes. Hopefully the city stays firm with this-- my girlfriend and I have done our part. Regardless, we still love our new home, but this was supposed to be a done deal when we signed on the dotted line.

I don't think you need to look as far as Grand Rapids, MI to see that it will help. Just look at the development that has been spurred by the Mud Hens new digs, 5th/3rd Field. With the facilities close to eachother, hockey will help businesses through the winter months when the Hens aren't playing. Concerts held year round will also provide a bigger boost in the summer as well. Anything is better than the old Toledo Sports Arena.....that place was a heap and also on the east side of the river. Having the new complex downtown will help the city quite a bit.
  20. ^ Most excellent. They have to be rather close if they are already hiring staff. That should give enough time for a quick operations shakedown prior to the St. Patty's Day festivities. After the parade I know where I'll be.....and within walking distance of home. :drunk:
  21. I can second this statement. The tax abatement is a HUGE insentive to purchase new construction within the city. You still have to pay taxes, but only on the land, not the structures built on it. The end result is that our monthly taxes are only $45! The abatement last for 15 years too, so it won't slap you in the face like ARMs have been doing to so many others lately.

Its too bad they couldn't have done something like Progressive Stadium at Jacobs Field. I think they are going to find folks far less compliant in calling it Progressive Field than when its neighbors name was changed to Quicken Loans Arena.
  23. Just got back from the Taphouse myself and it was absolutely excellent. I had the chicken baguette with the banana pepper jam-- it was seriously one of the best sandwiches I have had in a while. I believe it was only $7 and came with a huge pile of fries. My girlfriend had the burger and should second MorningTheft's assessment. There was already a good crowd in there and no one really knows about it yet-- this place is going to be a winner. Link to the Free times article: http://www.freetimes.com/stories/15/36/dream-house Doesn't look they have a website yet, but here is a MySpace page for them: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=5025848
  24. They actually are working in the power house. My girlfriend and I did the final walk of our house yesterday morning and the project manager said he was running over to the power house at the end because he had five guys over there. They're primarily working in the underworkings right now, but hopefull we'll start to actually see some work soon. As far as lights on on W. 76th, we're closing tonight and starting to move this weekend. I hate moving, but am really looking forward to the new hood. I'll see if I can take pictures of the interior before we start moving our stuff inside.
  25. Here is a question-- what the heck would be done with the current convention center if there is a new one built over by TC?
