  1. boreal or anyone: do you know how to access gildersleeve mountain in kirtland? i want to see this from there: ^thx wiki
  2. jeez, way to capture every stretch of street in my nabe in toledo, EXCEPT MINE i'm bummed
  3. luckily when the walmart in eastlake decided to expand (but not to superwalmart status (?)) it demo'd the previous bldg, and "rotated" the new bldg 90 degrees to become one of the (disconnected) arms of the U-shaped strip mall. too bad it now faces a vacant tops location.
  4. America in fast forward. Sorta reminds me of the shuttered Northtowne (sp?) mall area in Toledo, abutting empty Michigan. The mall fuzz (cool terminology, btw) there, however, is in less of a state of disinvestment. Great posts.
  5. i think part of the reason there are wacky school district boundaries is from some time in the past when there may have been better transportation from a farm on the outskirts of one jurisdiction to a school in a neighboring jurisdiction, than within its own. i read something to that effect once. also some cities annexed across school district lines, leaving them unchanged. here's a property tax map delineated by cities and the overlapping school districts. http://www.cleveland.com/pdgraphics/interactive/propertytax2007/ you can see all the pieces that don't fit nicely within city boundaries.
  6. try el tango taqueria on madison in lakewood
  7. this is the situation across the US, not just in cleveland, and even for the very rich. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/01/fashion/01rich.html?em&ex=1212811200&en=3b3f8ca38932045c&ei=5087%0A
  8. yes, there are quite a few wide open spaces in the southern annex area (former adams twp i presume) where development leapfrogged over, with no infill. notably along hill and dorr between byrne and reynolds.
  9. what about the circles on the east side, 3 of which on gates mills blvd (at shaker & brainard, lander & fairmount, and som ctr), and chagrin & lander. i feel like these are easily navigable, except that my mom always freaks out while driving thru. ...so maybe not?

i am positive that the people at the admissions or student life offices steer students to that area due to SAFETY. i hated living there, it was difficult not feeling like i would get run over riding my bike down heatherdowns. none of the streets had any sidewalks.

  12. yeah i saw Enon at Frankie's last month, first time i've been there. it was pretty dope.
  13. wow, mentor, barf
  14. Maxwell's is still there, Gator'z (awesome spelling bro) - a college venue i've only seen from the outside, a 7/11 gas station, a hair salon, and a caribbean restaurant are there. other area coffee includes Brewed Awakenings on central, Biggby at cricket west, Starbucks at the reconfigured westgate. a new coffee place, Caffeini's, is opening in a new construction MIXED USE (!) building directly across from Rocket Hall on Secor. I should snap a shot of it, there's no parking lot in front!
  15. any retail or bars in a concentrated area don't have to be upper class, just maybe a little bit more hip. a lot of the nightlife here consists of sports bars in strip malls. there are some retail remnants on Monroe north of OO. does anyone have an idea what's in store for the vacant lots fronting Bancroft between Meadowwood and Cheltenham? hopefully not more parking. It would be a good place to start on something more university neighborhood-oriented. I bet the neighbors on the cross streets would throw a NIMBY fit, though. yeah, i felt the need to represent toledo some.
  16. The other areas of high-end homes in Toledo (Old West End, Beverly... uh... am I missing any others?) also lack retail, or any other destination. What gives? I am from Cleveland and when I moved to Toledo I was expecting SOMETHING similar to Coventry, or a concentrated area of "cool stuff," like a venue and some restaurants and stores, bars, what have you. I am convinced that it just doesn't exist here. Downtown would be the only area with potential. Along the lines of West Toledo being more homeowner oriented and suburban in nature, much of the area is covered by suburban school districts: Sylvania and Washington (which is the city's "other" district). I also think the strong tradition of Catholic education kept many families within the city limits, and the Toledo Public Schools limits. afterthought: I guess Maumee has bars and stores and restaurants that are in a downtown setup (ie not a strip mall), but it's not somewhere that I would ever hang out. I'm more of a Wesley's person.
  17. Old Orchard is heavier on the grad student/resident physician population than undergrads. By the looks of the housing stock (quite a few impressive properties), it's geared more toward those who have already "made it." There is a seamless transition from an architectural standpoint when crossing Secor Rd into uber-snobby Ottawa Hills. There are, however, some more blasé, average suburban looking homes (with vinyl siding, etc) for "regular folks," and for student rentals.
  18. ^there are some more north of central that i should take photos of soon. they REALLY have not aged well. also my neighbor's house across the street is one of those.
  19. i'm glad they didn't call the cops on me
  20. Here's my first photo tour. It's of the Old Orchard nabe of Toledo, just north of the university. Check out the rectilinear grid! Here are the rough nabe boundaries: Central Ave to the north, Secor Rd to the west, Bancroft St to the south, and Cheltenham Rd (more or less) to the east. It's pretty much a nabe where it's rewarding to open your eyes. This is just before all the leaves sprouted on the trees. http://maps.google.com/maps/mm?ie=UTF8&hl=en&ll=41.669834,-83.615699&spn=0.022889,0.039997&z=15 some of the pix may be tilted, sorry for the amateurish quality! larger pix are available on flickr, pm me if interested ^i should post that one to "homes i feel sorry for" UT
  21. too bad the health campus can't move. i guess it would be impossible. i would like a trail connecting the health and main campuses along the railroad tracks adjacent to the two.
  22. i always thought the removal of baker was pointless. it's not like the diagonal view across euclid is that special.
  23. that's it, we can lump youngstown into the northeast ohio metro and see who's biggest after all. 8^)
  24. that area has 2 other chipotles in close proximity, at coventry and at legacy. there is a map somewhere with chipotle restaurants per state, and i am pretty sure that ohio had the 2nd most numerically after california, with over 100. too bad i can't find that map.
  25. wait, moving to westlake to commute to cincinnati? also, parkview does not exist as a suburb at the moment. it merged with fairview to create fairview park.
