Cincinnati: General Transit Thread
Here is the section of the Cincinnati Municipal Code our Police Department is failing to enforce: Sec. 506-54. - Stopping When Traffic Obstructed. No driver shall enter an intersection or a marked crosswalk unless there is sufficient space on the other side of the intersection or crosswalk to accommodate the vehicle being operated without obstructing the passage of other vehicles or pedestrians, notwithstanding any traffic control signal indication to proceed. (C.O. 506-54; reordained as C.M.C. 506-54, eff. Jan. 1, 1972) https://www.municode.com/library/oh/cincinnati/codes/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=TITVTRCO_CH506OPRIWA_S506-54STWHTROB

The developer has to return to the City's Planning Commission for final approval under the PD. This would be their last chance to voice their concerns over the project.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
No one really knows what the impact of AV's will be. However its a false choice to think they can replace transit in cities where rail based transit sustains dense neighborhoods. I think there is also a deeper fiscal impact related to sustaining infrastructure that we are just beginning to talk about in suburban communities. While the AV will give small cities and suburbs false justification to maintain the sprawl growth pattern they will still have to deal with the negative fiscal, health, environmental, and societal consequences of that growth. The key takeaway is that in order to build and maintain the interesting walk-friendly urban places people love, we will still need transit. The streetcar is the first step towards that.

Both UDF and Kroger prefer building gas stations with their stores now because it drives cross traffic between the store and the gas station. Also gas is a lucrative business. By using the points on a Kroger card towards discounts on gas prices customers are encouraged to buy more from Kroger stores and also buy gas from Kroger gas stations. Its a win win for them and I'm sure its similar for UDF.

Eric Jaffe, who writes for CityLab always criticizes streetcars but talks glowingly of BRT and efforts in the U.S. to get the "gold" level of BRT. There are also many transit experts who believe that if we just could change the social stigma against buses they would be just as good as rail. I don't disagree, but as we are seeing with our streetcar, rail brings new transit riders in a way buses do not. Hopefully some of these riders bleed off into becoming bus riders. But if they do they will see the considerable difference in the way we run our buses compared to the streetcar.

No they are into BRT.

I find the lack of a creamy whip downtown disturbing. It would kill at the Banks.

You have to wonder. These are the same ticketing machines at Govt. Square and in Uptown. The same real-time arrival technology and displays as well. I also think drivers are just not turning the GPS on when they start up the streetcar.

If you build over 5 stories in Oakley, the NIMBY's come out. If you build an Applebee's, they applaud!

http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/news/2016/09/22/exclusive-more-tenants-lined-up-for-east-side.html I laughed at that, as if the project leaders thought of "walkable design" as something you can just check off as a feature on your project. Uhm... nope. To their credit, the project does attempt to face the street, but that doesn't change the fact that it is sandwiched between Beechmont Ave one one side and a massive surface parking lot on the other side. So... who exactly is going to walk to this? So there will be a sidewalk to nowhere or to a parking lot...cool...

The Vine street one is owned by the original family. The other one on 13th is not. It was sold out of the family at some point so there is no connection.

Ideally they should run 3 streetcars non-peak and 4 peak until the traffic signal timing is reconfigured later this year. Not sure how they would pay for it though.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
Hey everyone. I want to take a moment to thank everyone for being a part of this forum. Today the people of Cincinnati will be able to ride a modern light rail circulator through downtown and Over-the-Rhine. This moment was hard fought, involving thousands of supporters and volunteers throughout the span of ten years. John Schneider always says this is a marathon and not a sprint. And here we are. There is no doubt how influential this forum and the people who contribute to it made a significant contribution to the project. Especially in an era before the dominance of Facebook and Twitter, and even today. Thank you to everyone.

The new plan is 5 stories, 84 apartments, and 112 parking spaces. The folks at the Oakley Community Council (at least those affiliated with St Cecilia) are still vehemently opposed. http://www.cincinnati.com/story/news/local/community-news/2016/09/08/residents-remain-opposed-building-plan/90002068/ Yet anything happening at Oakley station is just fine!

Construction costs are a lot higher right now due to the various projects going on around the urban core but I am surprised they did not try to work with the city for gap financing unless they did and the city is not providing any. Either way this is disappointing news.
