Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
There obviously needs to be a balance. There's been too much planning for cars over the past 50 years and not enough planning for other modes of transit. Transit like the streetcar makes sense for the urban core. Light rail and commuter rail makes sense for greater distances. Will Cincy turn into NYC after the streetcar? No, of course not. But the opportunity to reduce reliance on cars for all transportation needs will be enhanced and people will not be required to have one (a car) to be mobile.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
In 10 years, I can see Cincy with the proposed streetcar line fully constructed and maybe 1 or 2 connection spurs (CUT to Casino & Reading/Gilbert and WHT/Calhoun & McMillain couplet) and possibly a completed or under construction light rail line. Of course we can kiss all that goodbye is a certain ballot proposal passes.

Cincinnati Enquirer
Cincinnati Enquirer lays off 20 The Cincinnati Enquirer announced 20 layoffs Friday, including six managerial and administrative positions in the newsroom. “This is about a two and a half percent reduction,” said Mark Woodruff, vice president of market development for Enquirer Media. Woodruff said jobs being eliminated outside the newsroom are “primarily support roles.” Woodruff referred additional questions on the layoffs to Gannett Co. headquarters in McLean, Va. A spokeswoman was not immediately available.

Cincinnati: Pendleton: Hard Rock Casino Cincinnati
I recall the casino made an offer on the triangular lot between Broadway and Central Parkway with the purpose of using it as green space and an event lawn. It's a waste of space as a park unless you put some kind of central features (i.e. monument) in the center. Something cool like this: But maybe not so big.

Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: Mercer Commons
According to the site plan this building sits exactly where the planned entrance to the garage is going to go. Review of the plan indicates up to 5 buildings will be demolished (3 along an alley at 14th and Boots alley, 1 at the corner of Walnut and Mercer and the one on Vine.) It would make sense to try to at least save the facade. Not sure if the building is too big to move either.

^^Yes. Public rights-of-way include streets, alleys, existing city owned rail r-o-w, ... so its basically another back door ballot initiative to ban all rail till 2021.

Bortz is in charge of the replacement. We're probably fine for balance of streetcar votes on council.

Cincinnati: Clifton Heights: U Square @ the Loop
Nooooooo! Facebook doesn't count! :-P Edit: I further investigated this and...it really seems to be official. Do they not have enough money to start a real website? I guess that means I'm changing the name.

There are R's that support Rail. Look at the DOT Secretary Ray LaHood.

Cincinnati: Downtown: National Underground Railroad Freedom Center
Lets revisit some things here: Freedom Center seeks federalization By Mark Curnutte January 6, 2011 ... Pepper, who noted 2010 was a good year for the center, which unveiled a first-of-its-kind permanent exhibit on contemporary slavery and human trafficking. That exhibit, "Slavery Today," is one reason that through the first 11 months of 2010, the Freedom Center attracted 108,632 visitors, better than all of 2009. In addition, it paid off all of its debt, started an endowment and increased its level of private funding to $2.5 million, including $900,000 from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, Pepper said. [Emphasis mine] Give this thing a chance.

^^ Taken from the Fountain Square sky walk August 1973. That's 6th st signage at the very front and Vine St. Hill at the very end. These are from the US National Archives: http://www.flickr.com/photos/usnationalarchives/3887894424/# ^Agreed. The amount of visual clutter is mind-boggling. Cobra head's have no place in an urban setting.

The best thing to do would to turn the building into a Trader Joe's. That way it stands a better chance at capturing the market for organic goods.

You can rely on the local media to try and blow this benign process up into a big deal. The best part of that story was the end. If it's true that opponents are aiming for November, then I don't see anything stopping construction from starting before then.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
From: Today's Building Cincinnati: Contract expiration, FTA require new streetcar bids Due to the expiration of a prior contract and strings attached to federal funding, the City of Cincinnati is in the process of soliciting requests for proposals (RFP) from construction contractors for the first phase of its streetcar project. Stacy and Witbeck, Inc. had filled the role since signing a contract with the City in June 2009, but that contract expired on December 13. And, as a condition of being awarded a $25 million federal Urban Circulator Grant to help fund the project, the City is required to use Federal Transit Administration procedures for selecting a new contractor.
