City wants to break ground on streetcar project in November By Barry M. Horstman • [email protected] • October 15, 2010 Cincinnati city officials hope to break ground on the $128 million streetcar project next month, preferably with U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood among the dignitaries. In e-mails obtained by the Enquirer, City Manager Milton Dohoney Jr. says the groundbreaking ideally should occur after the Nov. 2 election and before the city's formal budget review starts. "I think that gives us about an eight- or nine-day window to play with," Dohoney wrote in a Sept. 16 e-mail sent to about a half dozen people involved with the streetcar project.

Governor Ted Strickland
This is a thread about the current Governor and his policies. If that changes, then we'll update accordingly. Please keep the Governor election discussion in the Ohio Governor Race: 2010 thread. Also personal attacks on individuals no matter what position he or she holds or would hold are not tolerated. Thank you!

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
The Fishwrap's Sunday Preview of the story: Streetcar debate inflames passions When a news conference last fall on a ballot measure that would have effectively killed Cincinnati’s streetcar plan nearly erupted into a fist fight, the episode offered vivid proof of the white-hot emotions aroused by an issue that has dominated local politics and civic discourse like few others. Nearly a year later, with the $128 million Downtown-to-Uptown streetcar project on the verge of breaking ground, the zeal and passions on both sides remain inflamed.

Chapter 34 Verse 15 of the Book of Ecclesiatics And he descended from the mountain bearing waffle fries and a 3 piece chicken strip meal. And as he dipped a piece of chicken into his holy sauce he looked unto me and said, "Dear child, the craving for chicken is great and many places for dining must be established bearing unto the world the holy goodness that is the chicken. But you must not tend shop on Sunday for that is the day of rest. And the lord shall smile upon the mass slaughtering of chickens that bear no likeness to common hens. All of this is your task young disciple, may you go in peace. Amen."

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
New report discovers faster initial travel times for Ohio's 3C Rail system Soapbox, 10/5/2010 A new report released by the Ohio Rail Development Commission (ORDC) shows that initial speeds for the proposed 3C Rail Corridor could be faster than first thought. The ORDC worked with Woodside, an industry leading railroad modeling firm, to produce the report and find new travel efficiencies. The report included a draft schedule that showed passenger trains traveling the corridor's entire length, 259 miles, in just over five hours. The five hour travel time equates to average speeds of 50 miles-per-hour. According to Amtrak, the initial travel speeds are some of the fastest of any recently developed system, and the third fastest since 1980

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
Isn't the stadium fund something that the County is responsible for? I'd like to see the exact wording of the Open Meetings Law because in the article the Enquirer stops from claiming outright that it's a violation: "Those meetings might have violated Ohio’s open meetings law." Key word is might. The Attorney for the Enquirer is unsure but the article implies heavily that there is a violation. Implications that have basis in suspicion and not facts. Then there is this little gem at the end, "City Council’s votes were taken on motions rather than ordinances. Motions are not binding, which means that by the time the money comes in, council members and the mayor at the time could change the priorities." It's basically an admission that this is not binding. Therefore there may be no issue. If it was an ordinance this would be a huge problem.

Casino $$ goes to streetcars and the fish wrap cries foul: Casino to pay for streetcars By Jane Prendergast • [email protected] • September 30, 2010 Up to a quarter of the $20 million a year Cincinnati expects to get from the casino will be spent to operate the streetcar. The money won’t start flowing in until 2013, but City Council on Wednesday – in a meeting full of confusion and delays – set its priorities for spending it. Half the revenue will go to the Port of Greater Cincinnati Development Authority for economic development projects. That was expected because the measure passed out of committee Monday.

I think it is June or July of this year. Tiara on QCS is not complete but almost finished & Friars Club is completely demolished.

Cincinnati: State of Downtown
Dohoney's statement doesn't make any sense. With the consolidation of Great American Insurance into QCS there should be plenty of room in the newly vacated towers, along with room in the building that housed National City's local HQ before moving to the PNC Center. Where do those people park now? I am sure most of them are not parking at Broadway Commons.

Forest Park: Forest Fair Mall / Cincinnati Mills Redevelopment
The mall is beyond the point of no return. It's time for the owners to start reading "Retrofitting Suburbia" for ideas on how to reconfigure the site. Also I'd hope the Old Spaghetti Factory can return to some historic downtown storefront.

Cincinnati: Downtown: The Edge
That was my concern. With a new 41 story building sucking up a large office tenant and other buildings expecting vacancies, this could just add to the over-abundance of office space downtown. Ideally, rates would go down to lure new tenants but that remains to be seen with the slow economy.

Cincinnati: Northside: American Can Factory Lofts
I think they are referring to the Brighton Corner area of the West End which has a lot of hip art and what not. It's a bit grittier of a scene than Gateway Quarter or Northside but fun nonetheless! (See 5chw4rt7z's blog post about their gallery walk here).
