Sorry, I did not mean to scare you about schools, but it is something that you will have to research.

I don't know the fees for schools, any forumers with offspring want to take that one?

Welcome to Cleveland! I am a Cleveland ex-pat, living in New Orleans. I am the son of two Irish Immigrants. Most of my extended family still lives in Ireland or scattered throughout the UK. The Irish community in Cleveland is strong, mostly one generation removed, like myself. Unfortunately, I am not sure how strong the Scottish community is. Maybe you can report back to us on that. So the important things. You will be able to get decent tea in the area. The West Side Market has a great mix of ethnic foods and it should be a place you visit early in your trip here. There are a lot of Irish stores in the area as well. Schools are something you will definitely need to research, and the more recent the information the better. Public schools are transitioning from a one provider model, the local city, to city schools and independent publically funded "charter" schools. I am a product of Cleveland Catholic education, which is readily availiable all throughout the city, but is considered private, so it is expensive. The local schools are very accepting of faiths outside of Catholic if that is a worry. (My high school, St. Joe's was less than 50% Catholic when I went there.) I am interested in seeing what the forumers feel if I suggested Little Italy or up Cedar Hill. Logistically, I am not sure how easy the commute would be. The reason I am suggesting it is because the Cleveland Clinic and Univerisy Hospitals are nearby. There are a lot of families moving to Cleveland from all over the world to work at these hospitals, just like yourself. My feeling is that a lot of them are clustered there. Since there will be a lot of fishes out of water, it may be a good place to make friends and make the transition easier. Here are some of the clinic's relocation guides, which may be helpful http://www.clevelandclinic.org/education/gme/pdffiles/relocation.pdf http://my.clevelandclinic.org/Documents/nursing/SurvivalGuide2003.pdf Best of luck!
  4. Cleveland is a very innovative city with a vast network of civic foundations that strive to improve the quality of life for it's citizens. I hope the PD can leverage some of that and reposition its business model for survival and growth over the next 20 years. Because selling your editorial opinion to companies who buy ad space is a horrible way to run a newspaper.
  5. ^give 'em hell. (or heck since it is at a Church)
  6. State Street in Chicago has a lot of discount stores. I would not mind Euclid Ave looking like State St.
  7. Way to rain on Brickmans ceremonial groundbreaking. This is great!
  8. i <3 Nordstrom rack, the once a year I go shopping for clothes.
  9. I don't get ths article, or why you like it. It sounds like that loudmouth troll "nothing in Cleveland is worth a crap" Roldo is saying that the PD is trying to PUSH the mall site or just the CC/MM in general. I disagree.
  10. MTS, I never posted before, but there seemed to be a coordinated effort to sway opinion towards the FCE site. First everyone complained that the Mall was DOOMED because there wasn't enough parking. A few people, including myself, pointed out that there are several municipally owned parking lots and garages right next to it. Then, all at the same time, many people said "don't build it underground, no one will see it." Again that argument was easily thwarted. Then, the FCE as public stewards against evil county commissioners was thier last argument. Yeah, but it was obvious that "talking points" memos went out to these people.
  11. ^Some jerk on cleveland.bomb thinks I am you, using an alias
  12. Does anyone on the New York end of things have any contacts with local media out there? This episode could be an eye opening experience for the people of Brooklyn when FCE/Ratner does not get its way. It would rather kill one of the best things going on in its parent city, with help of the local paper, if it can not get the largest piece of the public money pie.
  13. Cuyahoga County commissioners, Merchandise Mart have agreement in principle for medical mart project Posted by rrutti March 19, 2009 11:30AM Cuyahoga County commissioners this morning reached an agreement in principle on a development deal with Merchandise Mart Properties, Inc. The document will set the terms of financing for the medical mart project. The agreement will give ownership of the new medical mart and convention center structures to Chicago-based MMPI, allow MMPI to run them and allocate money collected from a sales tax increase to the project... http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2009/03/cuyahoga_county_commissioners_4.html
  14. So parking=connectivity. FCE must have habe been given Feagler's last bunch of articles to hone in on popular sentiment. Too bad for both of them it is not 1987.
  15. Let me think off the top of my head how many opportunities FCE had to land the CC, but got greedy and stalled to extort a better deal. 1. There was the original plan to put housing on Scranton Peninsula and link it with the construction of the new CC. This would have been a no brainer. But FCE dropped the SP housing along the way 2. The snit with the county when the county decided not to go into the Higbee's building. FCE said if you are not going to put the offices in Higbees, well then they would not let the county have the privilege of building the CC at Tower City. These were both before MMPI got into the action. Had they not been greedy or petulant, odds are the construction of the CC would be there by now. Because they don't have their thumb on MMPI as much as they have on the PD and most elected officials in town they lost out. Screw them, screw the PD, and screw every politician who gets their marching orders from them.
  16. Right on f*cking cue, way to go PD "editors" Fair questions about Cleveland's med mart deserve detailed answers: Plain Dealer editorial Posted by The editors March 18, 2009 04:24AM All evidence suggests that the Cuyahoga County commissioners and Merchandise Mart Properties Inc. are close to a final deal to build a medical mart and convention center in downtown Cleveland. (Related: Read The Plain Dealer's full reporting on this issue at cleveland.com/medicalmart)... http://blog.cleveland.com/pdopinion/2009/03/fair_questions_about_cleveland.html
  17. Case had success putting its dorms around a football field
  18. While I am upset with FCE, I really don't want them to completely fail and fall apart. It is a prominant Cleveland based company, and Sam Miller won't live forever. Maybe the next generation will value Cleveland a little better. That said, if it came to shoehorning the CC/MM at Tower City to keep FCE alive, I would let FCE die.
  19. Congratulations CSF!
  20. I predict the next round of articles in the PD would be to dig into MMPI business practices and trying to throw dirt on Chris Kennedy
  21. Wow, one half good article about the MM, then two trying to convince everyone to kill the project. I wonder if the editors just said "do everything you can to sink it" FCE did buy a full page ad. I wonder if they negotiated how many anti CC/MM articles it would get as part of the deal. Whats up with Mayor Jackson signing a year lease with the movie production company? The timing is suspect. So if FCE/PD is successful in poisening the mall site, is there a snowballs chance in hell that MMPI wouldn't rather walk away rather than deal with them?
  22. I was just making reference to the titans of this town.
  23. I like the clever idea of getting St. Ignatius to partner with the stadium. Ignatius alumni may not be the local titans that a Ratner family may be, but they are a player in local and regional politics. Getting that base exited about a plan for CSU could spark the political desire to get it done. Even if it is vetoed by the FCE board.
