  1. Ignorant question: Knowing where this development is, can there be a way to incorporate the waterfront line? By the way, the corporate head of IT has told just told me that I am one of the top 25 abusers of the internet in the company in the world. So I may participate less, at least during the day. :-(
  2. There was talk of maybe putting a whole foods in the Galleria...maybe a few years off
  3. Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) is the integration of mechanical elements, sensors, actuators, and electronics on a common silicon substrate through microfabrication technology. While the electronics are fabricated using integrated circuit (IC) process sequences (e.g., CMOS, Bipolar, or BICMOS processes), the micromechanical components are fabricated using compatible "micromachining" processes that selectively etch away parts of the silicon wafer or add new structural layers to form the mechanical and electromechanical devices. Advanced materials are just that, micro alloyed steels, ceramics, ect that are designed to specific applications that need specific material properties to achieve the desired results. For instance, I used to design oil pipelines in the gulf of mexico (well, the welds). The depths of the wells that could be used was dependent on the strength and ductility of the pipe that rises from the floor to the surface. So every project, the wheel was being re-invented.
  4. glad to hear it Paul, that interview kinda bummed me out
  5. well, maybe the steel prices are factoring into it. Also, plastic components have increased along with the price of oil. I really hope the project has expanded, but it may be just the cost of materials
  6. Interesting interview from Crains Cleveland, it mentions this project. Engineering a new Cleveland Few companies have had their hands in as many Northeast Ohio projects as engineering, design and architecture company URS Corp. The company, led in Cleveland by 44-year-old lifelong Northeast Ohioan Gary Hribar, has done design work on Gund Arena, Jacobs Field, Cleveland Browns Stadium, Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, the Cleveland-Cuyahoga County Port Authority, and widening of State Route 91 in Mayfield Village. Mr. Hribar, a 13-year veteran with URS, took the reins of the company’s Cleveland office late last year, after serving an apprenticeship under Bill Laubscher, who led the office since 1995. 7. I agree with the sentiment Qwios, but I think if they rehab the one building and then build a second I think it works out. Otherwise, I cant see anyone right now going into the AT building, and it would be a shame to have a building on 9th and Euclid go to waste.
  8. I wonder how many of these places will be open past midnight?
  9. How is Voinovich on transit issues? I know he more or less dictated that the waterfront line be built, so is that where it ends or is he pro-transit? Just wondering where some of our other elected leaders stand.
  10. Hey KJP, I know there is that Federal standard for transit money that ties into the reduction in commute time. Is that reduction in time based on current transit times of RTA, or of cars on the streets and freeways?
  11. Could the present waterfront line go from Muni lot to Tower city, then go to the W. 25th stop via the red line bridge and then (somehow) link to the lakefront blvd?
  12. Well, I hope the local companies do OK. It still seems like a better retail mix for Kingsdale shopping center rather than High Street. Still no grocery store, record store, or any of the original businesses from the old neighborhood. Has anyone been to that Frog Bear and Wild Boar club? What is it like?
  13. Would it quailify for one of the brownfield redevelopment funds floating around?
  14. I just read the article. They are going on strike for 1 to 1.5 percent of pay. So say they strike this whole week. Guess what? They lost at least 2% of thier wages for the year. And since this is the warm weather months, probably more. If it lasts two weeks, then that is 4 percent. So who is robbing these people, the employer or the union bosses?

I wonder if the smoking ban will have any effect on convention business. I mean you can host your convention in a city with smoking and nonsmoking bars or one where there are only non smoking bars. I guess we will see.
  16. does anyone have pictures of these things? it seems like a lot of fretting for a few large billboards.
  17. It has something to do with the proximity of advertisements to an interstate highway. With 70/71 and 670 slicing up all of downtown C-bus, I guess they are considered in violation

Dont forget that Kent has the Urban Design Collective in the gateway 'hood
  19. Hey everyone. A murmur in the (ahem) "Quiet Crisis" discussion is the fact that Cleveland needs to realize that it is a college town. So my first question to the group is, do you think that is true? If we are talking Greater Cleveland there is Case, CSU, Oberlin, Akron, John Carroll, BW, Kent, and lots of little ones like Ursuline and Lake Erie College. So, what do we need to do to "become" a college town? What sort of benefits can we leverage by being one?
  20. So is it going to be an Asian East Side Market?
  21. I dont know, it depends on what perspective you are looking at. If they wanted to reduce the number of undergrad students living on south campus, and populate it with law and med school students, then it is working. And, that may not be such a bad goal. But I could think of about 1000 better ways to do it than the mega hammer approach they took to the neighborhood. What happens if all these high end retailers dont make it and they pull out. Does this mall becomes city center two in ten years? What do you do then? And why does an area a mile from the center of the city need a lifestyle center anyways?
  22. It looks like there is going to be very little geared toward undergrads. Well maybe finish line.
  23. There is a church tucked in behind the WSM, maybe the diocese will be interested in selling it and the land?
  24. Some not so good news from today's PD Unstable land further delays CMHA project Tuesday, April 26, 2005 Angela D. Chatman Plain Dealer Reporter Plans for a multimillion-dollar development behind Riverview Tower will be revised because much of the land where it was to be built is unstable. The problem will further delay the Cuyahoga Metropolitan Housing Authority project, which faces a deadline for using federal grant money. A preliminary geotechnical study has found that the hillside stretching from behind the tower on West 25th Street down to Riverbed Road along the Cuyahoga River is shifting. The study said some sort of stabilization with anchors across the site - for about $15 million - would be needed... more at: http://www.cleveland.com
  25. my tirade continues. It seems like everytime the Lantern publishes CP propaganda I get fired up.... :shoot: Anywho, this was from the CP website as a news update. "Students want to be treated as adults" And CP might be generous enough to consider it! Welcome to my neighborhood, here is the code of conduct! Don't think about loitering and trying to read a book on valuable retail space, especially if you are just an undergrad. Students discuss Gateway safety plans The Campus Partners Student Advisory Board met April 14 with Elliot Boxerbaum of Security/Risk Management Consultants to discuss the security and public safety planning for South Campus Gateway. The students felt that Gateway should be welcoming to everyone. If a code of conduct were adopted, it should be implemented cautiously. Students want to be treated as adults. Campus Partners also is likely to hold a similar session with neighborhood residents later this spring. More at http://www.thelantern.com
