  1. You're correct. According to a Thomas Ott PD article this morning, Rock Ohio is appealing the loss of FCE's potential federal tax credit loss, due to the skyway's alteration of the historic Higbee's building facade. Wouldn't that mean that it is still an "if"...... if they are in the appeal process? What about the City? The federal tax credit loss is only one hurdle. Did the planning commission and any other necessary agency already approve the skywalk? I thought the issue was tabled last we heard. I was also wondering if the city had already agreed to the skywalk; I don't remember. if not, then i doubt it will happen. The casino will have no leverage. With the building open and hundreds of millions of dollars invested, horseshoe cant threaten to walk like they did in the Columbia meetings. The walkway was approved by the planning commission at the time of the Columbia building decision.
  2. ^IIRC, there is only a tax benefit for a few years, and then it expires. So, my guess is that the current management of the casino wants the skywalk. Maybe by that time the tax expires, with Phase II underway, they will reconsider.
  3. ^The current "slum landlords" include the casino
  4. ^Sounds like the skywalk to the "Collection auto group welcome center" is a matter of when, not if

They were all tied together, and launched at the same time with great fan fare. From this line in the article, I get the impression it is being re-evaluated. "Mr. Gilbert said he expects to retain the controversial and sometimes confusing Positively Cleveland name for the organization"

My advice to is always to follow the Brown line. Check out River North, Old Towne, and my favorite spot, Southport Ave.

To add onto my post above, I think you will start seeing a lot more of stories like this Couple restores 1905 home in East Cleveland http://www.cleveland.com/insideout/index.ssf/2012/04/couple_restores_1905_home_in_e.html She pointed out all the special details -- the marble fireplace discovered under faux brick, pocket doors, rough-hewn ceiling beams in the dining room, a fireplace in the master bedroom and closets on the third floor. The house was in foreclosure when the couple purchased it. No copper plumbing, no running water. No heat or light fixtures. The walls tested positive for lead paint. "The house, even as a board-up, was always clearly a gem," Norm said in an email. "Built over 100 years ago, by real craftsmen, the construction couldn't be duplicated today. The materials -- hardwoods and solid original hardware -- are stronger, heavier and more solid than most building materials available today."
  9. How I got the numbers is that I looked up Census links to tract data by decade. The reports had every tract listed, but as the decades went on, some of the original ones split up. Luckily, the links gave descriptions on how the tracts changed and to what numbers, so I was able to still list population for tracts as if they were still the originals. That gave a good idea of how the original tracts changed over time. I'm sure there were some overall changes to borders after 1950, though, because none of the final 2010 numbers exactly match the total 2010 city populations. The tract totals used (110 for Cincy, for example) are how many existed within the city in 1950. There are more now as many split up, but I wanted to keep everything listed as if things existed exactly like they did in 1950. Wow, I am sorry. I didn't realize you put that much effort into it (I really should read each post) Thanks for doing this.

The standard building shot, the view from the ballroom of the stadium, and the zig zag of ramps are my favorite shots. Thanks for sharing!
  11. Did Cleveland's borders change since 1950? Why is the 2010 population number listed above smaller than the overall number?

ZdM: What is the story with #165, is it in the process of rehab? Where is it? Thanks. Glenville, posting photos like these here on urban ohio is more of a call for action to the people who care, rather than sensationalizing "blight porn". I hope they will be used as "before" photos within 20 years. Personally, I know I nearly had a seizure this week when I got a google alert that Huffington Post had a photo essay of Euclid Avenue. When I saw it there were a few photos, and a story of how Euclid Ave is a wasteland especially near East Cleveland (aka University Circle). Now, all that guy was doing was trying to hawk some pics on his website. All I see from this thread is AMAZING possibilities. Maybe its been my time here in New Orleans, but I have seen structures much, much worse than these be transformed into amazing homes and businesses.
  13. Thanks, I couldn't place it.
  14. A long time ago, was Sushi 86 a dunkin donuts?
  15. Thanks for the pics, the sign look great
  16. One other great benefit of the casino: it is an ammenity that convention planners look for. What gives Cleveland a leg up, is that the casino, and most of the major tourist attractions that the planners look for are within a mile of the CC.
  17. It's a nice thing to see, the Indians in first place, and over in the AL East the Yankees and the Red Sox in the cellar
  18. Someone is trashing Cleveland, so I wanted to rally people who love Cleveland. Here is the article http://www.huffingtonpost.com/randy-fox/cleveland-ohio-and-its-accordion-king_b_1465943.html The Saga Of Cleveland, Ohio And Its Accordion King (PHOTOS) "As we entered the new millennium, the two cities' fates began to separate. After years of coping with its eroding manufacturing base, Pittsburgh was reborn as a health, educational and technical hub, with a healthy arts base, while Cleveland seems to have had a more difficult time polishing its worn edges." "The bustling Euclid Avenue that I remember so well is now a heartbreaker, a long line of opening and closing businesses, along with some sad reminders of the glory days. As one heads east on Euclid toward the poverty-stricken city of East Cleveland, things do indeed look bleak."
  19. Slightly off topic, but there is a huffington post story today, showing "the urban decay of Euclid Ave. It also pretty much says Pittsburgh succeeded and Cleveland failed I can't comment on it because I'm viewing via my iPhone. I encourage fellow UOers to read and comment on the article
  20. trying to stay positive, I like the lighting scheme of Higbees building. To me, that enhances the big city experience. I just can't get exited about an electronic billboard, either positively or negatively

  24. General Casino question. Does anyone know if there is a big difference in taxation between casino profits, and parking profits? What I am asking is, can the welcome center, acting as its own business, charge the casino for parking? Thus a lot of revenue that would be taxed at the casino rate, will now be taxed as a parking rate. How could I find this out?
  25. osu4brutus03, just curious, do you work for the casino, or any Gilbert enterprise? Because, the welcome center is a parking garage that has taken one landmarked building, and about to take a second. I just do not see the "wow" factor of a parking garage. But, to each their own.
