Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
There is an impressive water feature most cities would kill for just north of the mall. ;) I think at this point it is a scramble to get the biggest bang for the buck

Cleveland: General Business & Economic News
Well, I was going to put this in the "I <3 Cleveland" thread, but I just got a few texts from my old boss in the oil pipeline industry. He lives in Houston now, but he is from Paris and travels a lot. Lincoln Electric is showing him the town. His impression of Cleveland "wow, it's like the recession never touched this city, everywhere you look there is something being built" For what it's worth

I think it needs to be viewed in context of the group plan. The original buildings are there, in a classical style of architecture (W.28th help me here) Then you had forgettable buildings like the county annex building. Later the Society/Key complex had echos of the plan, but kind of blew it out of the water. In the 90s, the Stokes wing of the library did a neat little trick by having the corners of the building fit into the group plan "box" but had the smoked glass oval heart of the building soar above the corners. So now, this generation gives the group plan the Medical Mart. I personally like it, and I like the contrasting styles, with a neighborly reverence for Daniel Burnham's original vision for the mall

Is it just on the other side of the river or do they flip at Ontario?

Actually, DU has far exceed the owners' expectations. Financially, they are pretty well ahead of schedule and have had some difficulty keeping up with demand. Awesome!

Whether or not you like them, having a store that would fit in at Beachwood Place do well in downtown Cleveland is a great sign of health for the city. Even if the store isn't your cup of tea.

For instance, did you see how quickly the plan for turning a few floors of the May Company building into parking was shot down by city hall? Now if Rock Gaming had owned the May Company building and wanted that parking (with an overhead walkway) what would city hall say then?

We either need the apply the zoning and landmark preservation laws to everyone, regardless of wealth and political clout, or just go the way of Houston and get rid of zoning and let owners who buy buildings do whatever they want with it, including leveling it. What we can't let happen is to have laws applied to some people, and not others. I agree that the Columbia was DOA when Gilbert bought it, however if someone else had bought it and wanted to make it a garage, it would still be standing.

I would also recommend Detroit Shoreway neighborhood. It is next to Edgewater lakefront park, there ate lots of new, quality restaurants in the area. Battery Park is a large development in D.S. The neighborhood centers around about W. 65th, so you are still close to downtown and the W. 25th street, home to Market Square.

I missed the photos the first time around. The juxtaposition of the first photograph, when the Stanley was part of an impressive street wall, against the current set up is pretty jarring. I wonder what lovely shopping mall/toll booth architectural treat the Casino has planned for the site of the Stanley.
