Hmm, I wonder if setting up a forum about Ohio and tailoring it to cities like Cleveland would qualify. I bet if that same forum went out of its way to help new residents find houses/things to do it would be a shoe in for an award like this.
  2. how can we find out who voted against and who voted for?
  3. ..........and all members shall have, to the highest extent practicable, a known interest in landmarks preservation. "I dont really know a lot about preservation or architecture, but I do like new buildings. I vote demolition" WTF
  4. So the person who is the deciding vote for demolition admits she is completely ignorant about the subject. Awesome! I wonder who at City Hall suggested her
  5. Will these fins be rain/snow resistant? Shade is a smart priority for a place like Bakersfield. With Cleveland winds, especially downtown would a roof really provide more climate control? I think this city needs more things that celebrate the beautiful sunny days that occasionally pop up in the Cleve.
  6. Darn you CDM, I was going to say that
  7. I hope not. I'm still mad and will always be bitter at the lack of leadership City Hall showed when they threw away not only a great building, but also all the time and money that was put into the lower Prospect bike friendly road redevelopment. However, the past is in the past. Rooting for the casino to fail is rooting for Cleveland to fail.
  8. From this article it sounds like Rock Gaming is at least partly responsible for the delay http://www.cleveland.com/open/index.ssf/2011/11/cleveland_casino_opening_threa.html?mobRedir=false
  9. Every day the casino isn't open, government isn't getting any taxes, so I doubt it is a broad conspiracy.
  10. I posted this in the downtown residencies thread Regarding the Arcade, this is from the press release about the purchase from Skyline Blutrich added, “Our Skyline International team has an affinity for assets with a real story and something vibrant to share with visitors and their community. Our experience restoring the many unused spaces in the King Edward Hotel and integrating private residences there, as well as our current work renewing and expanding the Deerhurst Resort legacy are know-how we will build on in Cleveland.” Originally financed by leading 19th century businessmen, like John D. Rockefeller, and modeled on Milan’s Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, the Cleveland Arcade complex is a Victorian gem with two 10-story towers, where the hotel is located, linked by a daring, five-story, glass-roofed gallery and atrium. Skyline’s goals include re-positioning the shopping mall aspect of the arcade and investing in it and the hotel to make both outlets profitable for the long-term. http://www.skylineinvestments.com/media/documents/pdf/skyline-acquires-cleveland-arcade--hyatt-news-release-122111.pdf

  12. I could make a snarky comment about how the rush to knock down the Columbia wasn't needed, but I won't.
  13. Does this title work?
  14. Did the Scene get new ownership? Or did they finally decide if they want to be the local alternative paper they should stop agreeing with Brent Larkin so much?
  15. ^Not since April Fools day
  16. No, I was wrong when I posted saying that the develpoment was not in Beachwood (and deleted it about a minute later, you are quick today MTS) Anywho, per Michelle Jarboe http://blog.cleveland.com/business/2008/09/eaton_to_move_to_chagrin_highl.html The Richard E. Jacobs Group, of Westlake, would develop an Eaton project there, on land owned by the city of Cleveland. Jacobs referred all questions to Eaton. Though Cleveland would lose workers and taxes if Eaton moved, the city would make money on the land sale and would get a 50 percent cut of income tax generated by Eaton under a joint economic development agreement with Beachwood.
  17. I bet the Westin would like a signature restaurant as well
  18. I remember reading that the casino would have a buffet of Cleveland favorites. Could this be it?

I feel they need to position Sears against Target and not to sound critical, position KMart against dollar stores. I don't think KMart can put itself in the position of fighting against Wal-Mart. Maybe after the recession.
  20. City hall seems to believe that the only way to have a vibrant city is to have it enclosed in climate controlled tubes. At the same time they are trying to put local places like Beachland Ballroom out of business "It's important for the casino not to be just an enclosed shrine to betting," said Chris Warren, Cleveland's chief of regional development. With walkways and pedestrian tunnels linking the casino to the sports complex and Tower City retail-office complex, "you have a unique constellation of really high-visitor, high-marquee venues that will be connected," he said.
  21. Have you ever seen one person crossing over the pedestrian bridge in Gordon Park over the East Shoreway? Its not just about pedestrian access, it about integrating the city grid up to the shoreline park

I forgot about Smith's! I do remember when Alexanders was in the corner of Shore Center
  23. I was biting my tounge about rushing construction and lax oversite until I got all the facts, but if you want to go there.... ;)
  24. Fair enough, I originally thought it might be a spin off development.
