Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
Wish I could hit a "like" button I do sort of understand a bit of the frustration with RTA and the square. With so many busses laying over between the end of one route and the start of another, the square looks more like a bus parking lot rather than a grand public space. I hope the STJ transit center relieves some of this

Cleveland Medical Mart & Convention Center News Weekly Construction Update - 2/4/2011 Project Updates :: February 4, 2011 More than 200 construction workers are currently on site. Since January 3, the construction crews have been preparing the entire 1 million square foot area for demolition and abatement, including clearing off the surface of the historic Cleveland malls, installing construction trailers, and preparing the five buildings located at the corner of St. Clair and Ontario for demolition. The 235,000 square-foot, four-story Medical Mart will be constructed at the corner of St. Clair and Ontario Streets. Building Demolition Progress: During the past month, the Ontario parking garage was the first building to be completely demolished. The second building, the Chicago Title building, has been demolished this week from east to west utilizing an excavator. The final two west columns of the Chicago Title building will be demolished over the weekend, closing the sidewalk along Ontario Street. Flaggers will be used to control traffic while demolition activities are taking place. Abatement has been completed at the Sportsman Restaurant. The County Annex building is under full asbestos containment. Crews are removing construction materials and debris from the 113 St. Clair building. Convention Center: Under Malls B and C in the Cleveland Convention Center, crews are nearing completion on asbestos abatement work, clearing the way for demolition. Abatement continues in the Convention Center parking garage, mechanical rooms, tunnels, and storage rooms. Once the abatement is complete, demolition can begin. Crews will begin demolition of the loading dock on Mall C following electrical service termination. Crews will also layout existing and new columns and install temporary lighting in the Convention Center on both sides of Lakeside Drive. Crews are also beginning layout of caissons and will begin drilling pre-cores south of Lakeside Drive. Cleveland Thermal began 16" steam line valve and vault installation along St. Clair Drive. Mall Work: On the surface of the Malls, topsoil removal on Mall C is complete while topsoil removal including concrete roof topping continues on Mall B. Demolition of the roof on Mall B is scheduled to begin in the near future following power shutoff. Public Auditorium Connector (1964 addition): Crews began relocating electrical equipment from Public Auditorium earlier this week. Two walls will eventually be demolished and rebuilt in order to transfer electrical equipment. Crews are also setting up asbestos containments at the Public Auditorium connector. The Cleveland office of Turner Construction Company and Cleveland-based URS were selected in May, 2010 as the design-build team for the Cleveland Medical Mart & Convention Center. Turner Construction Company will serve as the design-build contractor and URS will fulfill the role of architect of record for the project. LMN Architects has been creating conceptual plans and design development drawings as the design architect. LMN will handle the first two phases of a three-step design process. http://www.clevelandmedicalmart.com/news/2011/02/weekly-construction-update---242011.php

Lets agree there was a housing bubble over the past 10 years, all over the country, not just Cleveland. Lets keep this thread on topic of the Flats East Bank development.

From that first drawing, it shows what I remember. The basement of Higbee's goes under prospect Ave.

Why is everyone so worried. If they can not move the casino, we have a very nice $300MILLION dollar casino in the Higbees building. Since they just spent $85MM on the land, if they can not put a casino there, they will put SOMETHING there, like a hotel, restaurants and shops. (and yes, a garage) That is the WORST case scenario. So, calm down everyone

I am not certian, but I *think* the basement goes under prospect and is not square but trapazoidal. From a 18 year old memory of that view, f it were extended, it would fit up next to landmark, but not cross paths with it. I could be completely wrong, but that is how it looked to me at the time. We were definitely under and on the other side of prospect, looking up to Huron and Ontario

Not only was Higbee's a cool visual, it was cool to shop in! The Window display's were awesom. That place was magical to me! I know you are old, but I did not realize you shopped there before the Terimal Tower was built! (check the picture, there is an old Higbees building on the site of the current Higbee's building, but it has a cool oval top, and was part of the 5,000+ structures leveled to build the TTC) EDIT: it was next to Hotel Cleveland, so it was not on the original site, but close

Back in my J Crew days at Tower City, we had storage down the hallway where coffee beanery and the English Oak room was/is. (hope you can picture it) Anywho, Dillards had a basement entrance there. Our storage was next to that entrance, and if you followed the hallway it opened to the gaping hope on Ontario. So, I'm guessing one reason the casino is going into the basement of the Higbees building is to use that path to connect to the casino on the other side of Huron via the "hole" If they do it, that will be one HELL of a big structure, so maybe another pedestian walkway??? (of course, if FCE puts in another hotel there....???)

I don't think I have seen that perspective on the original buildings at the terminal tower site. Thanks. Higbee's looks cool

Im in NOLA, and I was hoping it would be a Harrah's, it fits in nicely with the city, it does not dominate, but it is first class. Horseshoe? That is just a dumb name to begin with. I hope this does not wind up like a innerbelt project, starting off like a visionary way to do something spectacular, then wind up being sub-mediocre by the time it's finished with one let down after another. MTS!!! Lead us to the path of complaint that lets Mr. Gilbert know that second rate is not good enough for Cleveland. We want it to be a Harrah's!

Cleveland: Downtown: Mall Development and News
I like that picture, but I am hoping for more of a millennium park, not another monument to grass. I hope it is active and teaming with people, local people, who USE the park. That is why I would like to see a sliver of the park used for a dog park. With all of the apartments, condos and townhouses within a half a mile of the malls, you would not only see the people at the park, but people walking to and from the park with their dogs. I also hope it can be used a bit like the OSU oval, where you see sunbathers, volleyball games, weird preachers, frisbees, etc. I can't see local residents playing tag football in the above picture. While I am sure many will disagree, my hope is that the mall is teaming with life. And when people consider moving to downtown Cleveland, they can walk over to the mall and see that downtown is actually a community

OK, lets just nip this in the bud. There is no reason why we can't have a NCTC linked to the MMCC and a dramatic ballroom showing off Cleveland. I googled MMPI and North Coast transportation center. I was directed the the MMCC website where this article was linked; http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2010/06/intermodal_transportation_cent.html Cleveland plans intermodal transportation center to link key landmarks Published: Wednesday, June 23, 2010, 9:00 AM Updated: Wednesday, June 23, 2010, 9:20 AM CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Cleveland plans to build a long-awaited intermodal transportation center near the lakefront to link the new medical mart, convention center and Flats east bank redevelopment ... The new intermodal facility will likely be toward the east edge of Mall C so it doesn't block a ballroom in the new convention center to be fronted by a 25-foot-high wall of glass facing Lake Erie.

Im sure if the convention center is expanded northward, they would still be able to put in windows I am also certain that an entrance connecting the Amtrak without going through the ballroom. MMPI wants visitors to Cleveland to come away impressed with the city, and a dramatic view of the lake, Rock Hall, Stadium, and GLSC might be the most impressive in the city. Whats the problem?
