  1. Anything to report on these properties?
  2. How much money? With the way this issue is written, how much of that money will benefit the state? Will the money spent at the casio have otherwise been spent at existing businesses?
  3. I tend to travel a lot in bunches. When I am in an airport, especially on a layover I am tired, cranky and not in a mood to try new things. At that point, it I want a commodity item like coffee, give me a starbucks or DD. If I am traveling to that city, I will definitely scope out local flair. My point, national chains are good in airports
  4. Remember the predictions that Steelyard Commons would destroy W. 25th For some of the board vets, I pulled this gem out. I am happy to report that Steelyard with the Walmart did not turn W.25th into ghost town by the way, was DaninDC the same guy as 327? I understand. This is a very frustrating topic for me. Building a city isn't supposed to be hard--it's what came naturally for thousands of years. You build a variety of housing types, within walking distance of retail, offices, and transit stops. That's it. Anything else is overkill, and probably going to have unintended consequences as a result. For example, does anyone NOT think Wal Mart poses a challenge to local stores like Dave's Supermarkets, which already exist in underserved and poor neighborhoods? What advantage does this "power center" give Cleveland over the municipalities that have sucked Cleveland dry? Doesn't it just make Cleveland into another automobile-dominated suburb? Until Cleveland stops looking for the magic bullet and focuses exclusively on building honest-to-God neighborhoods, its efforts are doomed to utter failure. There are good examples of cities out there--Cleveland just likes to emulate the bad ones.
  5. If it is just a casino, I don't think it will have massive impact. If it is a casino/indoor entertainment district it will hurt E. 4th and W. 6th
  6. He certainly did, and he has done a great job with the Cavs. But one of the city's best leaders?? What has he done for schools, arts, urban development, economic development (other than his businesses), crime, transportation...what leadership has he shown on any urban issue? I don't by any means hate the guy, and I appreciate how he likes Cleveland. But I don't see all that much difference between him and Lerner, both out of town guys who own sports teams. With Sportstime Ohio, the Dolans probably employ more people than Quicken Loans. The real difference is the fact that he has partnered with Forest City, and Forest City has made him the face of the developments they want to do in Cleveland. Forest City had used him in their newspaper to twice make impassioned pleas to try to swing public opinion to their side. Now that I think of it, how different is this casino proposal than the other riverboats and casinos Forest City has pushed for Tower City land? How much of this casino is owned by Forest City?
  7. What has he done besides buying a basketball team and bringing a few hundred jobs to the city. Has he done anything that will benefit the community more than himself? Off the top of my head here are some people who have done more for the city and are better leaders The Gund family, see the foundation Peter Lewis with his support of the arts and Case Toby Cosgrove as the face of the Cleveland Clinic Michael Symon Lillian Kuri Peter Lawson Jones (and I am not even a fan of his) Price and Corna of Stonebridge and 668 fame Iris and the late Bert Wolstien Chris Royanne HELL, SAM MILLER..... I am sorry if I am jumping down your throat, but I have seen posts like these on cleveland.bomb and I just don't get it. Either these people work and love working for Gilbert, or they just don't know the caliber of leadership in this town. I have nothing against Dan Gilbert. But, really, what is there to be for?
  8. Yeah, but I don't think "business hotel" when I think W, and E&Y and the law firm is probably the primary driver for the hotel
  9. Maybe he wants that to be his regional chain restaurant, an upscale Winking Lizard.
  10. CHITOWN! homesick
  11. I just wish they would take over running the marathon, they would make it world class.
  12. ^I used to work an engineer in automotive (so I was on management side), and usually things are not cut and dry like that. Recently the UAW has realized its take it or leave it attitude has more often than not been answered with a "we'll leave it" They, like the company, have some sacred cows that they will fight for on "principal." I worked as a supplier to CAP, the Chicago Assembly Plant, which makes the Taurus. I heard recently the union made a MAJOR concession in allowing more flexible work hours, such as 4 10s instead of 5 8s. That gives the company much more flexibility and responsiveness to the market. Cleveland UAW has been even more willing than the national UAW to cut deals, so I doubt that if this was the only sticking point that they could not resolve it. Ford and the UAW's relationship is far from perfect, but they have the best relationship of anyone.
  13. Just speculating, but what would have to happen to make Progressive want to move downtown, or at least have a downtown presence? They have been doing better financially lately, partially thanks to "Flo", the newish president of the company went after the naming right of (forever) Jacob's field. So, any chance they would want to either build new, or be 'progressive' and rehab a property and have a signature building? This could have been put into urban bar, because it is complete speculation. But, if anyone knows anything, spill!
  14. Im chipping away at the convention center/medical mart thread. Should have more time available tonight
  15. Cleveland RTA bus Cleveland RTA rapid Columbus COTA bus Chicago CTA bus Chicago CTA "El" Ann Arbor bus Boston T DC Metro train Houston Bus Jackson MS bus New Orleans Bus NYC subway Portland streetcar London bus London "tube" Paris subway Shanghai subway
  16. Holy crap. Guys, I will not have access to a real computer until Tuesday (iphone). If that is too late, I can go to a kinkos. (there is also this little thing about Southern Decadance) Let me know. I bet I have posted 1000 articles over the years
  17. If not Second City, there are several smaller Second City type theaters in Chicago that do well. If we can't get Second City, maybe one of those theaters groups. (Sorry, can't remember the names but a bunch of my friends who were trying to get into Second City would try very hard to get into these places)
  18. I think E. 4th can draw Second City now.
  19. Hmm, I wonder if they already know what they are going to do with the building ?

For what its worth UPDATE 4-BP makes 'giant' oil find in Gulf of Mexico Wed Sep 2, 2009 7:01pm EDT By Tom Bergin LONDON, Sept 2 (Reuters) - Oil major BP Plc (BP.L: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) said it has made an oil discovery in the Gulf of Mexico that analysts believe could contain more than 1 billion barrels of recoverable reserves, reaffirming the Gulf's strategic importance to the industry. http://www.reuters.com/article/newsOne/idUSL253064820090902?virtualBrandChannel=10522
  21. I have been trying to find this online, but with little luck. My basic question is how will I be affected if one of the House bills pass? I currently have a high deductable ($2500) and a heath savings account. My company kicked in about $500 to start the account, and I put in $35 a week. The $35 is the only out of pocket I pay, but it is basically my money. By the end of the year, I should have just about enough money to cover the deductable. Next year, I can actually start saving beyond the deductable(got willing I don't need medical care). Will the "mininmum" coverage floor require me to pay for a policy with a lower deductable, when I really don't need it? If you do have an answer to this or a similar situation, please cite the source. Thank you!
  22. I picked 6-10, but I think the way the team plays under Mangini, the fans will have pride in the Browns again. (currently knocking on wood)
  23. The lowest set of columns jump out at me more than before. Maybe my eye would just skip over them when I was looking up, or the cleaning really helped them stand out by casting shadows on the clean stone. Anywho, what a neat building. Kudos to Forest City for polishing it's gem!
  24. Yep, saw it in NOLA
