  1. ^where do you work? my guess is they say "Columbus" but are actually from Grove-tucky or Spring-tucky
  2. The editor probably insisted on it, otherwise it would have shown Cleveland in too positive a light
  3. Didn't Kindlers turn into a dance club for the last few years of its existance?
  4. ARCH 101: (for me) So there is talk that by having Vinoly's design incorporate some of the design aspects of the Bruer addition, it has minimized its impact. So, my question is does the Bruer design, and brutalist design in general only serve as a point of contrast? Is the additon only remarkable because it is unlike anything around it, and not on its own merits?
  5. ^For all of Cleveland's well documented bad luck, one bit of good luck was the fact that at a time when we had industrial titans swimming in money, establishing and contributing towards endowments and foundations was in vouge. Thanks Jeptha Wade, and all your crazy buddies!
  6. I am fine with graceful/boring for the CMA, but I kind of hope to be delightfully punched in the face with MOCA. For the Bruer fans online, do you think by trying to honor the Bruer addition as an equal to the original building in the overall design, did it minimize the impact of Bruer's design? There was a comment along those lines in an article recently posted, and I guess I can see that. It is well documented on this board that I am not a fan of the Ameritrust building, but for some reason I liked his work at CMA. Maybe because when I was a little kid on field trips to the museum, we would always enter that way, so I just thought that is what the whole museum looked like. Just wanted to get the opinion of a Breur fan.
  7. Imagine the medical mart like a shopping mall so it works better horizontal rather than verticale The rendering is Jeff Jacobs idea for a convention center casino/hotel
  8. SB, who is the typical Avenue browser, young couples, empty nesters, young professionals?

^Yeah, but I have moved around A LOT, and never has being mugged considered a right of initiation like it is in NOLA. Locals are confused and slightly bewildered in the fact that I have not been held up yet.
  15. Educate me, how does S-CHIP work. I am actually for a universal type health insurance for children. Like this debate, the devil is in the details
  16. Mayday: Do you have the before and after pictures for the Grand Arcade? I thought I saw that on a thread a few years back, and my ability with the search function, sucks. I am just brining this up, because it kind of looks like the same color brick, maybe same supplier
  17. Compared to some hospital systems and especially pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies make much lower percent profit. I think it is because they are selling a commodity, and the fact that there is competition. If you want to get after waste and greed in health care, lets look at the companies that make the largest percent profit, and go after them, then down the line. Lets try to measure the difference between profiting and profiteering. I also understand the political necessity to boil down a complex issue to a good vs. bad. While I don't like insurance industry bashing, I don't think it is sinister. While we are talking about profiteering, lets throw ambulance chasing lawyers, the kind of ones who have commercial testimonials saying "Lawyer Joe got me $100,000" I appreciate the sober conversation so far on this thread. Thank you

If you take my advice, specifically walk around the malls looking at a sunset over the lake with the silhouettes of the Rock hall, Science Center and the Stadium. Then saunter up to E. 4th and have dinner. It it is an off night, belly up to the bar and get to know the bartender. They are more likely to remember names and faces than servers, since server sections can change shift to shift. There is something about the lake (for me either Erie or Michigan) that can just calms you. Wherever you go, be close to the water and it will be OK. (My brothers live on the lake in Euclid, and you may be able to get a small house on the lake for that money)
  20. Just noticed this quote. I actually lived in a building that transitioned from Section 8 to market rate. 1212 S. Michigan, just as the south loop was blowing up. As people with vouchers' one year lease would expire, they were offered places on lower floors, and the upper floors were remodeled. Once it was less than 30% section 8, they did common area renovation, and in about 5 years it was all market rate housing. So it can happen
  21. Maybe just because I enjoy being an annoying little brother, I wonder if Jacobs is doing this just to f*ck with Gilbert, a little tit for tat from the whole convention center/PD/FC/Gilbert mess. I mean, did he actually use the word "connectivity" If Jacobs owns a casino, I am SURE it will be in the west bank of the flats. But just to make sure it does not go to Tower City, poof, this idea. So when Gilbert says lets build one at TC, people will say, well, what about that plan to put it next to the CC? This vote fails, and the next vote Jacobs gets in on.

I moved 12 times in the span of 5 years. Thank you automotive industry, and the line from my favorite Son Volt song, Drown "When in doubt, move on. No need to sort it out."

I lived in Sandusky for a brief period in the fall and winter of 2003 (maybe 2004) anywho, I loved wandering around the downtown there. The building were impressive, the access to the water was impressive, I loved going to a pier and looking out over the lake at Cedar Point at night. I also loved how sparse it was with people. It wasn't lonely, just, there were not a lot of people around. It is hard to describe, but it was nice. So, I started trying to rack my brains about what would be similar in Greater Cleveland. Believe it or not, I am leaning toward downtown living. It is not densely populated, you have the impressive buildings and parks, it is very safe, and you two would quickly become regulars at restaurants just like you did in Sandusky (I miss Cameo pizza). You may be able to rent a place in the Avenue district, which gives you a couple of blocks of breathing room from traffic. My second choice is my standby choice for anyone, Detroit Shoreway, near Gordon Square. Seriously, check out downtown on a Tuesday night when the Indians are not in town, and see if it reminds you of Sandusky.
