  1. I kind of like how the building gets to be "new" for the third time now. I am not advocating putting facades on out of fashion building styles, its just a neat story, IMHO.

I live in NOLA now, and you are wise to ask about safety. You should be fine walking, but don't get stupid drunk and don't walk up Bourbon to Canal late at night. You will want to cut down to Royal before you cross. I have a weekend job at the Royal Sonesta in the Quarter. Unless you already booked, try the Prince Conti hotel, or one of the many boutique hotels in the Quarter. I can try to help find one if you want. Give me a shout when you are in town. Welcome to NOLA! Any suggestions welcome 1. First, not to be a jerk, but don't call it N'arlins or anything like that. It is New Orleans or NOLA 2. Beads are for Carnival season. It is fun to have someone throw you a set from a balcony, then just put it in your pocket as a souvenir 3. Frenchmen street in the Marigny is the local's bourbon street. Great music, food, and bars 4. Have a Sazerac at Tujaug's (pronounced Two Jacks) 5. Have a Cafe Au Lait and an order of Beniets at Cafe Du Monde (open 24 hours - great drunk food) 6. Take the St. Charles streetcar to riverbend in uptown, then take the next one back to the quarter :) The scenery is better than the scene 7. Look into renting a bike, my friends do that a lot when they visit. Then go up Esplanade to City Park (there is the Museum of Art there), City Park to Carrolton to St. Charles (river bend) then St. Carles back to the Quarter, Hop on over to Magazine after Audubon park. You will pass by a great cross section of the city in about a two hour bike ride. 8. HAVE FUN BUT KEEP YOUR WITTS ABOUT YOU. ALWAYS HAVE CASH IN CASE YOU ARE MUGGED. Give them at least $40 and they should leave you alone. Personally I have never had any trouble, but I'm guessing 95% of my New Orleans friends have been mugged at least once. If you are in the Quarter or the Marigny or CBD and can walk without stumbling, you should will be fine. Just keep hydrated. Give me a shout when you make it into town.
  5. We have passionate views on both sides of the issue. Lets see what kind of reform our group would be able to come up with. RULE 1: LEAVE ROOTING FOR YOUR POLITICAL PARTY AT THE DOOR RULE 2: LEAVE GRUDGES AGAINGST YOUR POLITICAL FOES AT THE DOOR RULE 3: LEAVE THE (NON) ISSUE OF THE DAY AT THE DOOR (i.e. Death Panels, Astroturf, etc) RULE 3: CONSTUCTIVE CRITICISM ONLY I happen to feel that most people who contribute to this board are intelligent, bright people who are able to work with others who do not share their ideas. If we can't work out a plan without lobbyists and constituents, who can? I'll start by saying I think we can reform the system to reduce waste. We spend more per capita on health care, but not everyone has access to adequate medical resources. Many people are denied coverage for a pre-existing condition, and others loose benefits because they have hit a cap on spending for their policy. Here are some of the things I am for: Cover people with preexisting conditions under the Americans with Disabilities Act, which requires businesses to make "reasonable accommodations" to make sure they are not discriminated against. Make an outright denial of service a form of discrimination. Basically make it illegal to use "preexisting condition" as a way to deny service. People with HIV are currently covered under ADA Open up insurance company competition across state lines, this would also make them regulated by the Federal Gov't via the interstate commerce clause Use the tax code as a carrot and a stick for hospitals and doctors to adopt the Cleveland Clinic, salary based, not procedure based compensation Set a hard dollar amount that employers can use to expense employee health care, like what is used for mileage, with minimum standards for coverage. Let small businesses get back dollar for dollar in tax credits the amount they spend on healthcare to the amount above (Just thought of this one) Let individuals go into the marketplace and purchase the policy they want, and be able to turn it into their company for reimbursement like mileage. That will stimulate competition For the unemployed, have COBRA be tied into unemployment insurance, Use tax code to incentivize "minute clinics" in drug stores, especially in poor areas, and near hospitals that have there ER used for general medicine In short, I don't mind government paying a big chunk of health care. I just don't want them running health care. Critiques, any other ideas?
  6. One "advantage" today's movers and shakers have over ones in the past generation is the fact that they are not burdened by "how things used to be." For lack of of a better term, lets call it the Feagler effect. The Feagler effect is the self defeating realization that any project or string of projects, anything new, will not bring back the vibrant city in which they grew up in. Why build a Rock Hall if it is not going to bring back Halle's dept. store? Or like this guy, why develop the lakefront if it is not going to bring the Flats back? People like this need to get over it and get out of the way

So here they are The interview went well. I actually got a compliment on my brown shoes. After the interview, I signed paperwork making an offer on my first house. When I got back into my car and flipped on the radio, Paulo Nutini's "New Shoes" started playing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Isgm9wLzkww

See, it is tough when you apply at a bar/restaurant where the uniform is white shirt, black pants. For the interview, I wanted to steer clear of those colors. Besides I got some pretty baby blues. Thanks for the recommendation. I card has been on double secret probation for a while now I am going to change the theme of the look I am going for Nice, honest, hard working Chicago kid in New Orleans who really knows his stuff, but seriously wants to be part of a legend. I really don't see a lot of dark shirts down here, and I don't want to appear that I can not adapt to New Orleans' uptown crowd.
  12. People, help me out here. I have an interview at Sazarac here in New Orleans. It was recently listed along with Velvet Tango Room as one of the best cocktail bars in the country. It is just a part time gig, but if I persue opening a bar in a few years, it will be GREAT for my bio. OK, so I got the interview because the bar manager and liquor manager have both worked in Chicago and new some of the places I worked (Schubas, Tiny Lounge, Chicago Firehouse Rest., etc.) So for the interview I wanted to look Chicago. I bought my Chicago granimals - Kenneth Cole. A Topaz basic dress shirt, a Pecan colored "micro manage" pant and a cool tie, a stripped tie, mostly red but some of the stripes had a grayish brown color. Standard interview look. Then I got to the shoes....... Really, brown shoes? Sure, I was at Macy's, but all three sales people were telling me to go with brown shoes. That I "couldn't" wear black shoes with the pecan colored pants. I personally like the combination of browns and blacks. Anywho Fashion council: What shoes would you wear to this interview if you wanted to convey urban sophistication, confidence, yet in a conservative way for an interview. help please THANK YOU http://www.therooseveltneworleans.com/diningAndEntertainment/bar.php

  14. I think ED would delay the project, and with the economy depressed, it is a good time to start construction to keep costs down. (just speculation on my part)

No, I am in management. I grew up in a union house, but I personally feel that right now unions need people more than people need unions. What I really hope is that unions figure out a way to be a benefit to both employees and posibly employers going forward.

I am not sure if this is funny or sad http://www.politico.com/blogs/bensmith/ Teamsters face threat of internal picket The unionized workers on the Teamsters Washington-based national staff are locked in a contract dispute with their own labor organization and Teamsters President Jimmy Hoffa is warning local officials of, as he puts it, the embarrassing prospect of a strike. ... 17. Maybe this will advance a discussion about regional tax sharing, which I think is needed
  18. I'm not one to gossip, so you aint heard it from me, but heard they revoked your Gay Card and the Chicagoland Queens tribunal ran you out of town. Oh yeah, I forgot
  19. They should rightly do a tax sharing with Strongsville, for a certain number of years.
  20. Funny story since you brought up patios on condo buildings. The story was the Trump building had a hard time selling condos because they did not have any. My friend is sort of friends with the Mayor, and when they discussed it, the Mayor said that when Central Station (all the new condos in the south loop, near Soldier Field) was being planned, it was the Mayor who pused for the patios. The developers (one of which was Forest City) tried to convince him that condo people didn't like patios. Then he replied that he knew Chicago people, when the weather is nice, the spend every possible moment outside. Guess Trump did not get the memo.
  21. NOW WHY THE HELL DID I LEAVE?? I'm going to go punch something right now Edit: I feel better now, well except my hand. OK, I am going to move back in the fall of next year. Next item, cancel home shopping in New Orleans. Sweet Home Chicago, here I come. (all Mayday's fault)
  22. There is one other difference from the Dolan's and Mr. Jacobs. The Dolan's have told Shapiro that they want to keep and develop pitching as a top priority. While Mr. Jacobs was supposed to be a hands off guy, I think he dug the long ball.
  23. Playing Devil's advocate: up to this season the Dilan's have payed enough payroll to keep the team competitive, I don't have the numbers but I would guess the amount would be on par with most of the central division. There is a problem with the young talent coming up from the farm system. As I posed my question earlier, it is either they are not as talented as the scouts thought, or that they have not developed well. So, I am looking at the scouts and the developmental coaches. Both of those people are under the direction of the GM. I like Shapiro, but I'm starting to think he just got lucky with the Colon trade that brought Sizemore and Lee. Bring back Hart and Grover for a few years, couldn't hurt at this point
  24. How was the event? Anyone go?
  25. So, just a lobby and sidewalk update?
