  2. $30 million in construction contracts awarded for Cleveland's Higbee casino Published: Thursday, June 30, 2011, 5:30 AM Updated: Thursday, June 30, 2011, 8:45 AM By Dave Davis, The Plain Dealer Jeff Cohen has millions in his pocket, the historic Higbee building to work with, and a little more than six months to transform a cherished Cleveland landmark into a Las Vegas-style casino He's betting he can do it. Cohen, vice chairman of the Cleveland Cavaliers who's overseeing the construction of the first phase of the Horseshoe Casino Cleveland, said Wednesday that casino developer Rock Ohio Caesars had just awarded 20 new construction contracts worth $30 million. As proof, construction workers didn't even stop while he told reporters that crews had been working double shifts to make up for time that was lost when the project shut down May 11 because of a dispute with the governor over raising casino taxes and fees. http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2011/06/30_million_in_construction_con.html

I live in Euclid up above the Euclid Creek reservation. We're kind of geographically isolated from the rest of the city here, but its nice to be by the park. I did notice that in the latest Cleveland magazine, they had crime statistics for the local suburbs. I didn't like how they laid it out, but one thing that caught me by surprise was how disproportionately "rape-y" Euclid is compared to the other suburbs. It was so out of whack it seemed like it had to be a typo.

I try to make myself not mind this one, but I can't help but feel a small twinge. It always bothers me when people say they feel nauseous to describe feeling like they're going to vomit when they should say they feel nauseated.
  11. How about no A/C in the tube to force people to walk outside in the summer?
  12. That's a bogus point. The language in the amendment would prohibit them building it anywhere but the areas they've already identified.
  13. Actually, the waitress didn't tell me this *wink*, but they were not in financial trouble at all, the offer was just really good. Couldn't get a number out of her though. I think that's the only thing on their menu I like. For everything else, they're just a more expensive Applebee's
  14. Not sure if anyone posted this news yet. I went to Metro tonight, and it turns out tonight was their last night. They were bought out by Bar Louie. I was just telling a friend how we need a crappy chain in the middle of the warehouse district... *barf* :weird: Just did a quick glance at yelp and I only saw 2 in the country that had more than 3 stars...
  15. I think they used that siding because they didn't want the students to get home sick. :-D
  16. If someone's purpose is to cross Ontario and get to the casino, I don't get how forcing them to do it outdoors helps East 4th. I'm guessing most of these people are not synergy types to begin with. But each one that does wander over is still a casino-induced net gain for East 4th. Think of all the people that could be walking by fat fish blue :)
  17. My girlfriend and I were walking down Euclid on a Saturday a few weeks ago and I was pointing out the changes that have been made recently. we were standing by Fenn tower when she commented on how ugly/generic and out of place the new dorms + admin building look next to the rest of the buildings going west on the south side of Euclid.

Peyton Hillis advances to 'Madden' final Peyton Hillis is one step away from becoming the first Cleveland Browns player to grace the cover of the popular "Madden" video game series. ESPN.com's SportsNation announced Monday that Hillis, a No. 10 seed, pulled another upset in the "Madden NFL 12" cover tournament. He garnered 61 percent of the vote to defeat Green Bay Packers quarterback and No. 1 seed Aaron Rodgers. Hillis will face Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick in the finals. http://espn.go.com/blog/afcnorth/post/_/id/26641/peyton-hillis-advances-to-madden-final go vote! :) http://espn.go.com/sportsnation/feature/madden2012cover

Sure. We've got uniforms and everything! Do you think the Indians have a cardboard cutout of Dolan in the locker room, ripping off a piece of his clothing after each win? They probably have a cardboard cutout of a naked Dolan and get to add a piece of clothing with each win.

This is about a a year too late (I just stumbled upon this thread), but someone needs to look at the connection between punch and the gulf oil spill. :-)
  21. Can those May Co. floors support the weight of all those cars? If not, are there cost effective ways to reinforce these types of structures? There's also a data center company in there currently. Yes there is a data center. I think they take up 2 floors, maybe just one. However, I think that this is a much better use for the overall property. While I think it will be very difficult to remove the garage on the corner of Prospect and Ontario, just due to the cost and demand forces. I still think that doing this is a great idea. Before reading that I had no real idea just how large the May Co. building was. Thats eginormous! Additionally the restaurant, Pura Vida I think, is coming together. Drywall appears to be up on the interior so I am hopeful for a summer opening, but thats just speculation. Key had server room infrastructure on 2 floors (floors 5 and 6), so 1-2 floors for the data center sounds right, unless they spent a ton of money converting more space. Even if they did expand the infrastructure, it would most certainly be contained to those 2 floors. The Server/Sorter rooms didn't take up more than 10-15% of each floor.
  22. There's also a data center company in there currently.
  23. What about bridges? Those seem pretty vulnerable to me. You can wreak major, long-term havoc by taking out a few bridges.
  24. Not a conspiracy at all. There should be serious concerns about the viability of a nearly $1 billion casino investment in Cleveland. Fact is that the Cleveland casino was originally projected to be the largest market in Ohio, but recent projections dropped Cleveland from first to last in estimated "casino seats." (http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20110214/BIZ01/102140321/Casino-estimates-shrink) Yes, even behind Toledo. This gives me reason to be concerned that the $350 million "temporary" casino won't be so temporary and makes me question whether Gilbert will be willing to spend another $600 million on casino seats that may not be necessary based on the most recent projections. I'm sure he would prefer to have a new building right next to the Q and Progressive Field, but will it make business sense? I have my doubts... If I'm reading that correctly, it just says Cleveland's temporary casino will be smaller than the other cities final casinos. Seems to me, its better to undershoot than overshoot with your opening size.
  25. Got a good chuckle from that picture. I sent a link for that picture to a friend who, after taking a cursory glance, responded "What is that, Libiya?"
