  1. This is a long shot - but in one of those Ohio History/Old photos books, I swear I've seen photos of historic school swimming pools - and one in particular had these rails/tracks around the ceiling. They'd give the kids harnesses, which would be hooked to wheels that ran along the tracks. It'd keep the little/disabled kids learning to swim going in a circle and keep them from drowning. anyone ever seen this pic? or know what I'm talking about? check out the attached image - you can see a remnant of the track above the pool.
  2. ha! thats it - it only shows up on street view from i-75 - not from the local streets, nor bing aerial! must be new... anyone know the name? thanks!!!!
  3. could be south of 675... I've passed it twice on the highway, and never think to figure out exactly where I am.,,,,
  4. I dont really know dayton at all - so dont know the specific neighborhood. but i think its a few minutes before you get to downtown, heading north on I75.. the roof has a vertical portion a little like st mary's in sf... (totally different scale, and in copper) http://www.flickr.com/photos/47081385@N00/1282962134# sorry this is such a wild goose chase.
  5. So, there is a church along the east side (i believe) of I-75 that I always pass on the way up to dayton that I really like - Its got a metal standing seam roof (maybe copper), an interesting roof form that defines a tower like form. very swoopy. anyone know what church it is? searched on bing and google and cant seem to find it... driving me a bit crazy any suggestions would be helpful! thanks luke
  6. Hi JSkinner, sorry for the random post here, but I am trying to track down images of the St Pauls church at the SW corner of 15th and Race. I saw on some previous posts on urban ohio that you had some photos... i'm looking for pictures both before the 1920 storm and before the more recent storms/fires that have gutted the top of the bell tower. anything you could send along would help out. thanks! luke [email protected]

Just curious, do you know if it'd be possible to get a tour of the Metal Blast building? Sounds like the owners might not be easy to contact.... thanks! luke
  8. Yeah, I think the tunnel that can be seen from 71 under mcmillan is the first part of a tunnel that is for the old CN&L, and is still intact (its pretty cool, and easy to get to. It stretches from the intersection of Oak and May, to roughly Mcmillan. The Deer Creek tunnel has supposedly caved in at the North and South portals (I had read that the south entrance was farther north than liberty - closer to the dorchester street area - but ill look into it), and may have been covered up by 71. Whats really interesting, is that they also started construction at several points midway - digging straight down at three points in walnut hills, and then after hitting a depth of up to 200', starting to dig in either direction. Supposedly, none of these sections connect. I really like the idea that there is a man-hole cover somewhere under a few feet of dirt, that drops into a shaft 200' deep, down to a cave-like chunk of tunnel. (maybe im dreaming).... I'll let you know if I find it :). below is the CN&L tunnel:
  9. I was wondering if anyone has ever come across information about 'Deer Creek Tunnel' - I came across it on the www.Cincinnati-transit.net website (http://www.cincinnati-transit.net/deercreek.html) Apparently, it was only partially dug, and the north and south portals were covered up during the I-71 project. The only other reference that I've come across so far is a map from the Library of Congress' site: http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/D?gmd:12:./temp/~ammem_2NE4: Are there any rail road enthusiasts out there that might know more? many thanks! Luke
