Looks like the old Loop bus route that I used when I took classes at Tri-C, worked at CSU and lived in Shaker Heights.

Cleveland: 2012 Democratic National Convention?
Actually no it doesn't..... For all we know the DNC has already made up its mind and is just throwing bones to certain cities if only just to say we're thinking about you...... It is too easy to verify any convention's space and hotel room requirements. This isn't "throwing a bone." It is more likely a bidding war for which city will do the most to accommodate the convention. When I ran large meetings I routinely found myself on the receiving end of "here's what we will do for your group" proposals. There was an earlier post about how it will cost the City of Cleveland to play host. I hope whoever is developing that proposal doesn't bankrupt the city.

Cleveland: 2012 Democratic National Convention?
The fact that Cleveland is a finalist means that we must have (or will soon have) enough hotel rooms and meeting space to accomodate the DNC. It will simply come down to which city is going to be able to provide the best experience for the attendees and at the best price for the political party. I realize this isn't a great comparison, but if our city can handle 80,000 going to a football game or a sell out at The Q and the Indians are playing, I think we can handle a convention the size of the DNC. Have some faith...

Ohio Universities and how they affect their cities
You've got it backwards. More jobs would attract more students. We already have far more students/graduates than we have jobs for and that has been the case since the 1970's or even earlier. CSU has always had increases in enrollment in a down economy. Now they are improving campus life and attracting a higher caliber student. Companies looking to relocate or expand might look upon this growth as an opportunity to build its talent pool. Is that backwards, I think not. It is a long term proposition. To handle another 5,000 students CSU would have to build more classrooms and hire more faculty and staff. This does not happen overnight. Educated talent and jobs must grow together, but the talent has to be ready.

Ohio Universities and how they affect their cities
To bring this back on topic and to answer some of the original questions: 5,000 to 15,000 more students at Cleveland State would generate more investment and jobs in the area. A diverse, educated and talented pool of potential workers would attract more businesses to the area. The result might be to have Euclid Avenue back to the way it was in the 70's and 80's with full storefronts and crowded sidewalks from Public Square to East 30th. Investing in CSU's growth is as good as any other idea I've heard for revitalizing downtown. Then again, I might be a bit biased. 5,000 to 15,000 more students would skyrocket sales in the store.

Personally I think the plaza will help the businesses in the middle of that block. Right now anyone on the north side of Euclid between E. 18 and E. 21st just walk to those street to head to the Wolstein Center. A business in the middle (Jimmy John's, Moe's) would miss out. The plaza gives a cut through to the Wolstein Center and more visibility to those businesses. Besides, I've been inside the 1910 building, it needed to come down before it fell down.

At Noon on Monday, June 7th, the CSU Bookstore opened in the new student center. While it will be several weeks before all of the fixtures and finishes are complete, it's very nice to be out of that old store. Please say hi to Keith if you come to visit.

Not sure if you are serious about it being set back too far? Given the expected traffic into the Student Center, I think they set it back just right. There is a wide sidewalk and no steps which will be much more inviting in my opinion. The area in front of the southeast corner will have patio seating for the pub. I think the grade changes they have to deal were handled pretty well.

I wish I had things working between my phone and computer. I have lots of shots inside the new student center. It's coming along and on June 7th the CSU Bookstore will open as the first tenant.

Originality in Movies = dead?
I just read this whole thread and the flashbacks it created were nuts. I remember when I was at Byron Junior High School in Shaker Heights. I got a job in the cafeteria in the dishwashing room. Guess who taught me how to use the dishwasher? Peter Ostrum, Charlie from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Last thing I heard he's a vet in upstate NY.

Which Pizza Pan? 18th and Euclid probably. Stopped in today for a late lunch. Typical small bar. TV's, a few booths, tables, bar food. Had the Viking burger, comes with fries. It was ok. We'll see what it will be like in September.

RE: Bookstore Move and Demo The current plan is to have the CSU Bookstore open Tuesday, June 1st in the New Student Center. The bookstore will only close for the Memorial Day weekend (Saturday through Monday). Now you know how I will be spending that weekend. Demo on the old store starts June 2nd. The additional dorms will be ready for August 2011.

I was told by one of the construction crew that the siding on the new dorms, Euclid Commons, is a composite that includes concrete.

To the issue of merchandise sales -- the only sure thing is that the amount of royalties an institution receives will fluctuate as the teams meet with success or failure. Those royalties are a small percentage of the merchandise sales (6% to 12%). When you see an Ohio State t-shirt at WalMart, Columbus is only seeing the royalty. Trust me, the amount of merchandise actually sold by the institution is not making anyone rich nor is it enough to fund a sport. Additionally, the expense of running merchandise sales takes a huge cut of any profits. In the end the only one making serious money is the merchandise manufacturer. They don't take a risk on emblematic inventory since they only make the goods once they are ordered by the institution or another retailer.

Cleveland Burke Lakefront Airport
Air Force One uses Hopkins. More room for security. I truly cannot remember a 747 every being at BKL.

Cleveland: HealthLine / Euclid Corridor
Earlier I had mentioned that there was construction going on at E. 24th and Euclid. Pipes were brought from the northside to the south to serve the new dorms. Concrete was removed completely. When they did finish they cut clean lines, put down a bit of rebar, and poured the slab. I'm pretty sure they were driving on it within 24 hours.

Cleveland newbie "dumb" questions
Also being a teenager in the 70's, I remember when MSB was touring with (I think) REO Speedwagon. For all the dates outside of Cleveland, MSB was the opening act and most of the concerts were not sold out. When they came to Cleveland REO Speedwagon opened, MSB was the headliner and the Coliseum was sold out.

Cleveland: HealthLine / Euclid Corridor
I'm at that location virtually everyday and those marks are the result of traffic trying to get back into the car lane after weaving around some construction that was going on in the street. They may want to wait until the rest of the new dorms at that location are finished before making any repairs.

Please tell me about Reserve Square (Cleveland)
http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2010/03/grocery_store_at_downtown_clevelands_reserve_square_apartments_is_closing.html This might change your mind about the grocery store option. CLEVELAND, Ohio -- One of downtown Cleveland's few grocery stores will close soon, as the owner of the Reserve Square apartment complex tackles a first-floor renovation project. The K&D Group, an apartment owner and developer in Willoughby, plans to close the store within 60 days. Most recently called the Avenue Supermarket, the store has been unprofitable for years. K&D bought the massive Reserve Square apartment building in 2005 and expanded the market to a 22,000-square-foot store stocked with food, toiletries and other products. "It has always lost money, and we expanded the store with the hopes that it would become profitable," said Doug Price, K&D's chief executive. "That never really worked." Price plans to replace the market with a 6,000-square-foot convenience store. The change is part of a larger renovation project, which will eliminate a ground-floor walkway between East 12th and East 13th streets.

Cleveland: Historic Photos
In August 2011 we need to post a current pic of the E.24th & Euclid intersection. Right now just the bookstore building is the same. That will change in June when demolition is scheduled to begin.

Bestselling books in 17 American cities (Cleveland included)
Just a purely anecdotal comment, I agree with the post that older people make up the larger percentage of those still buying books. I can tell you first hand that the copies of "Going Rouge" are not being bought by the college students.

Cleveland: Restaurant News & Info
Got lunch there today. It's similar to a Chipolte, but less expensive. They have a half order with chips, salsa and pop for $5. It was enough for me. They say they will open at 10:30AM during the week and close at 10:00PM. They will be open on the weekends, but not sure yet what their hours will be. I'll be back!!!
