  1. We have a very similar neighborhood in Seattle (without the blight) but still a mixed race neighborhood with a crime problems, some abandonment. Housing stock, commercial district almost identical. You can't touch a house in that neighborhood for less than $300K.

    How about the Rosetta deal? Stolen from the suburbs. That does not help. Any 22 year old minorities without high school diplomas working there? These people need jobs desperately.

    It is not a question of being quiet or loud. It is a question of understanding business and standing up to the entrenched power structure (unions, poverty pimps) to get some low wage jobs into this town and not being part of that power structure. Somehow Mike White saw beyond where and what he came from and what was necessary. In six years I see no evidence that Frank Jackson does. I agree that he travels, etc. but he is chasing pipe dreams. Has he traveled to Chicago, Atlanta and Detroit to entice some of their industries to come here? How about Dayton?

  7. Great thread, thanks for your effort. I always enjoy looking at the rolling hill, forested views over N.E. Ohio's cities. The trees are so close to the down towns. Is this unique to N.E. Ohio? If you ever get to the top of one of the University Circle bldgs. look north. Nothing but trees to the Lake.

  11. Could 'commercial' refer to retail? They meant office towers. When Wa Mu collapsed, it emptied out a brand new 40 story office tower. Chase only took a few floors. The building I am in, Columbia tower, 76 floors is 20% empty. Update. Seattle's Columbia tower (76 stories) is over 40% vacant. Owner has defaulted on mortage payments.

Should anyone care to remember garbage/graffiti along the Blue line tracks from the airport to Terminal Tower was so bad in the 1980's that a volunteer organization was formed to clean it up-Rapid Recovery. It has now morphed into Park Works and doesn't/won't have anything to do with cleaning up the rapid tracks. This has been a long time problem.

  14. I often wondered why similar cities developed so differently and how much zoning played into that. To me, Vancouver BC is a prime example. A city smaller than Seattle but high rise developments everywhere, even in the inner ring suburbs serviced by light rail surrounded by fields! I always attributed this to immigration from Hong Kong and Taiwan where this is what people are used to living in but maybe I am wrong?
  15. With O'hare so crowded, why can't a business case (with appropriate incentives) be made to shift some trans-atlantic traffic to CLE? Especially if the 3-C has a stop at CLE.

  17. I don't know why this is so complicated. Do what worked before,reinstate the Hanna Fountains. In the summer you couldn't get a seat at lunch. In the winter, use the pool as an ice skating rink. Hockey anyone? Add a hot dog cart in the summer , a coffee cart in the winter and you are done.
  18. I was serious when I suggested that the commisioners offer the Bruer tower for free if UAL/Continental move the combined HQ to Cleveland. Why isn't this a good idea?

Others have been there before, for the price of a lunch you could probably find out from them (and maybe find an investor). Also, you don't need to travel the country. The best/classiest "waterfront" bar (sort of water front) I have ever seen anywhere in the U.S. was Sammy's in the Flats. It really beat anything I have seen in all my business travels. Find out why that failed, and how to fix avoid that and you will have a winner. I would also talk to the owner of Captain Frank's. As I remember, there was some serious talk about resurrecting that restaurant and you would want to know where those plans are before you begin anything.
  20. Capital will always migrate to "cheap" labor. We of course see that within the USA as well. Companies don't relocate to North Carolina because its a great place to live and work, they relocate there because labor is relatively cheap and "at will". Average wage rates at Ohio's Honda plants are not that much different than Detroit's big three. The labor attitude, flexibility, etc. is night and day different. Management can handle the rest.
  21. Net zero tax breaks, subsidized parking, subsidized RTA passes, etc. in return for lease commitments, hiring commitments, establishing a Securities Zone, loan rebate offer for employees that buy walking distance condo's. Should I go on?
  22. Honestly, I think the idea of "high speed rail" in the U.S., outside of the eastern corridor and maybe the west is a pipe dream if we are talking bullet train speeds. The infrastructure costs for the grade separated right of way alone completely blows the ROI out of the water. Further, I don't really see why we need it. 89 mph average speeds would beat the pants off auto travel and with Talgo/Fiat style tilt trains is doable on existing tracks with no additional right of way purchase necessary. I know Canada did this in the 60's 70's and passenger acceptance of rail was high. This would have the best ROI so why are we (or some) trying to sell the public on 3c as a first step to bullet trains. We don't need them and the public certainly wouldn't want to pay the price.
  23. The State is likely guided by a bidding process. It is not the responsibility of the State to tell road builders to retool for other development; it is the responsibility of the business to adapt to market forces. At least that is what a true Republican would say. Well, I'm not a true Republican so I can say otherwise.
  24. How about the county commissioners offer UA/Continental the Bruer tower for free if they move the HQ to Cleveland.
