You would be surprised at how appealing this neighborhood looks to someone currently living in Seattle.

Ok here is the constructive comment for the, "Ohio Politics, Mayor Jackson" thread. Hope it meets with your approval. Cleveland is in desperate need of low skill, light manufacturing jobs to employ the thousands of 18-25 year old inner city men (some recently released from the criminal justice system) who have no work, no high school diploma or equivalent, low literacy skills, low or no job skills, etc. The failure to do so will make some neighborhoods in Cleveland unlivable and will prevent: i) middle class citizens of any race, and ii) manufacturing businesses from moving/relocating into those neighborhoods. The jobs need to come from outside the NEO region but not from outside the country. The Mayor's willful failure to recognize this problem will absolutely result in the failure of Cleveland. he is constantly chasing after either high tech or skilled union jobs which these people will never qualify for. We are at a tipping point and if we don't get some new leadership soon all the progress made by Mayor White will be lost. Now please go to the Convention Center thread and delete all the negative comments made about the County Commissioners.

Drew Cary saves Cleveland, Mayor Prosperity Responds: "Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson sees it both ways. "The people of the city of Cleveland will save Cleveland," he said in a phone interview last week." Nero (Jackson) fiddles while Rome (Cleveland) burns (economically).
  4. Probably Pisans
  5. A question. Is the red line extension succeeding be case the local municipality is pro-rail and is pushing it on RTA whereas lakewood is not? I don't know, I'm just asking.
  6. In the 1970's I remember being on a trip in eastern Cananda, probably outside Toronto or Monteral on a highway. My dad was driving so we were going in excess of 80 mph. A Canadian passenger train passed us doing at least 90 mph with what was probably 1960's era equipment (rolling stock, tracks, signalling, etc.). I still remember seeing a man in the passenger car reading a newspaper. It looked like the "conestoga wagon" type engine and stainless steel single level cars. Why is it now so expensive to obtain these passenger rail speeds that were commonplace 50 years ago?
  7. I only went to Parma (and Parma Heights) to visit girlfriends. Twice I was stoped by parma/parma heights cops and they were nasty about it both times. One of those times I was patted down outside my car! I look like (an am) a Pisan. They are (or at least were) nasty to everybody-they had a storm trooper attitude compared to cops in other suburbs. I always thought City of Cleveland cops were very proffesional in comparison to most suburban cops.
  8. I seem to remember a rapid stop in shaker square that had coffee, sandwiches, etc. I was done in an English Tudor style and on the right day, with the right light and Kodachrome 64 looked very bucolic.
  9. Sigh, is there any way any of this could be revived?
  10. Is there any fish that would eat these things but not pose other environmental problems?
  11. So now Drew Carry is going to save Cleveland on page one of the PD? Is this the PD's way of voting "No Confidence" in the Mayor without having to attack him directly and face the fallout of criticizing a black mayor?
  12. I will continue to say that the problem is not having a strong mayor who: i) has the business background to see the long term benefits of current investment and ii) the political power to knock heads together. Chicago has that. Cleveland does not.
  13. "thunderbolt of irony". I like that. I am going to use it.

Do you mean 490? yes, yes, yes, 490, whatever!
  15. tedolph replied to a post in a topic in Roads & Biking
This whole thing is a bad idea. Can't we just route everybody to I 480?
  16. Looks like RTA (at least rail) is in free fall. Surprising considering how much better rail was doing than the busses durring the run up in fuel prices. What could account for this?

The freighter picture is just stunning
  18. I think this type of design (so far) works well in a park like atmosphere. Most of the design is in a shape which is somewhat organic which leads the eye to the natural, sinuous shapes of the flora, topography, etc. That is the relationship to the adjacent environment in which I think modern design works best. THe UH cancer hospital on the other hand looks ot odds with its environment and adjacent classical structures (e.g. Allen Memorial Library, Lakeside hospital, Severance hall, Twing center, etc.). How's that for an engineer!
  19. Or if it would keep the height of the ceiling down and preserve the sight lines to lake Erie.

The magnatude of the jump from 2002 - 2005 surprises me. China?
  21. I continue to be amazed that any mall can survive without an anchor tenant. Why is it that retail subsidies are out of the question? SYC got tax breaks (although they did not take them?). I think once the Towpath Trial is completed to Terminal Tower that an LL Bean or REI on the back end of the Avenue would be a huge success.
  22. They are all good: composition, exposure, sharpness, etc. Some are simply stunning. I learn something from everyone of your photo threads. You challenge the photographer in all of us.
  23. I like this too. The bright color highlights look good in winter sunshine. We will see about this summer with hazy skies.
  24. So far, I'm liking this. Somewhat Miles VanderRoe ish. (sp?)
