Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
Why can't the county just do it themselves? We have the money, we know how to run a convention center. The due diligence has been completed. what do we need MMPI for? I thnk the city/county can twist arms with the property owners in ways MMPI can't.

Cleveland: Lakefront Development and News
"All these great ideas have stopped and will never come to fruition." ??? I think they all will. It will just take a better economy. Look at Cleveland in the 90's.

Sherman, what kind of camera are you using?

Cleveland- Ohio City
Most are blurry-looks like camera shake. Try a higher ASA. Squeeze the shutter button gently. It should be a bit of a surprise when the shutter goes off.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
Sorry for what might be a stupid (or moot) question. I have attended a number of large consumer trade shows on a regular basis e.g. CES show in Las Vegas, local trade shows at Seattle's convention center, etc. Other than things like the boat show (which can be handled at the IX center) I have never seen a display or booth 30' tall. If we have the IX center for the odd shows like that, why does the MM need 30' tall ceilings other than that is what the client wants?

1970s CN Turbo Train Film - What happened to all the optimism?
Does the train set still exist? Couldn't we just put a decomissioned Russian submarine reactor in it? We could get Richard Pryor to star in a movie about it!

Peak Oil
Thanks for the quotation etiquette. I will have to figure out how to embed a link. Someone missed the point. The abiotic oil people believe that petroleum is being constantly, naturally produced by catalyzation of methane gas in the subduction zones beneath the earth's crust and thus oil is a renewable resource. Some one here responeded to this idea in a detailed post saying it was unlikely.

Peak Oil
Abiotic oil- "A group of Swedish researchers have managed to prove that fossils from animals and plants are not necessary for the creation of crude oil and natural gas. Energy expert Vladimir Kutcherov says, "There is no doubt that our research proves that crude oil and natural gas are generated without the involvement of fossils. All types of bedrock can serve as reservoirs of oil." He has simulated the process involving pressure and heat that occurs naturally in the inner layers of the earth, the process that generates hydrocarbon, the primary component in oil and natural gas. " Is this a short enough quotation that I don't need to post a link?

You have proof? Or are you stating your hunch as if it were fact? Hunch

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
MMPI wants out now that new elected officials are going to be in charge. That is why they presented something they know will be unacceptable. The Governor, state representatives, etc. are staying out because they perceive that this is a political albatross. Only the Mayor is coming to the dance because he doesn't know any better.

Screw MMPI. If the medical mart concept is such a great idea, why can't the City/County do it themselves and just hire an operator? We have the money. If we were able to run a convention center why can't we run a medical mart/convention center. Now that MMPI has done all the economic studies/financial due diligence do we really need them now that we know that the idea is sound?

AsiaTown Cleveland
A queston. Why does Cleveland's Little Italy thrive and Cleveland's Chinatown struggle. What are the fundamental differences that drive development. I always perceived both neighborhood as safe so it is not crime.

It has already gotten a lot clearer, primarily due to the zebra mussel, a filter feeder.

Cleveland: Port Authority News & Info
"I'm starting to feel that the Port's failure to relocate could really be a blessing in disguise." Ain't it the truth. The recreational potential of Lake Eire is grossly underdeveloped. The lake is only going to get cleaner and clearer over time. There is an embryonic wreck diving industry operating out of Gordon Park. It attracts hard core wreck divers from all over the country but is only a tenth of what it will be with better visibility which will come in time. Although I have never been there I am told that the rubble pile/reef made from the old Municipal Stadium has attracted a fair number of fish. Why not have a snorkeling business there? Is there really any reason why the Edgewater park experience can't be as good as Mentor Headlands? I went to Waikiki Beach, Oahu this summer (usually vacation on other islands). I sat next to a guy from Mentor (small world). He said he goes with his wife to Hawaii every year but other than the salt water it really isn't much better than the beach at Mentor Headlands. He said it, I didn't. We have the warmest lake so it is well suited for recreational activities. We really just don't appreciate the potential here. Cleaner water faster would make all the difference.

Cleveland, brief and gloomy
I think they are great photos. Even in the gloom Cleveland looks strong, industrial and dare I say prosperous! The new court house looks fantastic on days like this.

This model train set won't fit under your Christmas tree!!
I remember when I was a kid there was a huge model train set somewhere near Akron (on the Cleveland side). It was awesome and overwhelming and great. Gone now I am sure. Anybody remember anything about it? Lionel O gauge I believe.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
"What is your beef with the Mayor? Are you a tax paying citizen of Cleveland?" Currently a taxpayer of the City of Seattle. Taxpayer of the City of Cleveland from 1970-1985. The Mayor is the right man at the wrong time. Good at balancing the books, bad at the "vision thing" and totally lacking in business acumen, contacts, etc. He would be OK in a booming economy with the right economic development czar. He is not what Cleveland needs at this time. P.S. I am a very poor speller, grammar not so bad!

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
??? Are you serious? Aside from the atrocious grammar used in his letter (did the legal department review this first?) look at this gem, "The city of Cleveland will gladly retain public auditorium and make the necessary repairs". Is he serious? $60, 000,000.00 in repairs? remove, repair and reinstall facade? $6,000,000.00 per year in operating expenses? If he is bluffing, who does he think he is fooling? If he is not bluffing and the repair bill is real MMPI would be fools not to accept and we will be stuck with a white elephant. The only acceptable solution is for public auditorium to be a renevated part of the new convention center. I don't see how the Mayor's letter moves in that direction. The commissioners are out of this. Their political careers are over. Not one of them could be elected dog catcher at this point. Jackson is now carrying our water and MMPI will run circles around him.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
So is this MMPI's way of forcing the city to improve the property, one way (i.e. as part of the medical mart) or another (as a City of Cleveland facility)?
-
Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
City officials say they await detailed reports from MMPI before deciding how to address the hall, but Mayor Frank Jackson didn't wait to blast the company. "You didn't have to basically condemn the place," Jackson said. "You didn't have to do that." Is this what passes for a negotiating strategy? If this is what he is saying publically, can you imagine what he is saying privately? I will retract one of my earlier statementsabout the estimated renovation cost. If the entire facade has to be removed and reinstalled (in addition to the HVAC and electrical work) the $60 million figure is starting to look possible. Still too high by a factor of two but at least not off by an order of magnitude.

Over the river and through... the Cleveland Metroparks (Gates Mills & Bedford)
It is my understanding that Gates Mills opted out of the metropark plan in the 1930's. I have sent letters and e-mails to Cle. Metroparks about this but have never gotten anything back that suggested this is a hot topic. On the other hand, you never know what has been going on behind the scenes. The West Creek initative flew under the radar for a long time. I have noticed that there have been some relevant property acquisitions. Mostly by local municipalities that seem to be moving in this direction. However I have no testamentary knowledge to the effect that there is a concerted plan to close the loop. Figure in the integration with the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, the towpath trail to the someday Canal Basin Park/Wiskey Island, North Coast bikeway and the completion of this link would be a tremendous regional asset.

If this isn't going to happen (and I never was a fan) why did we demolish down the HoJo?

Cleveland: The Residences at 668 Euclid Avenue
A huge improvement. A queston for you all. 668, Stonebridge, E 12th street, etc. were all proposed/funded during or pre Cambell administration. These projects are either started, well along or nearing completion. Is there any significant new residential on the drawing boards in the pipeline for downtown (e.g. not yet started) that has any real hope of moving forward?
