Cleveland: University Hospitals Expansion (University Circle)
Stunningly mismatched for the surrounding buildings. What was the architect thinking?

Cuyahoga County: New Tax to Support the Arts
Thanks for the insight EC. I am not an artist well, except for singing in a few operas in the chorus, but I wonder. Instead of directly subsidizing the opera, how about committing to buying a certain number of tickets and distributing them to community centers, etc. so as not to crowd out ticket sales. Wouldn't this sort of quasi-market approach be better than direct subsidy? I guess I am thinking that it might drive the decision making process of these groups in a different direction, more on delivery of product and less on bureaucracy. Just asking.

Cuyahoga County: New Tax to Support the Arts
It certaintly appears that all these groups are worthy of support. I wonder though if instead of using the $ for opperating support if the $ shouldn't instead be used to purchase art. Sort of like a renissance patron. I wonder how it would change the way these groups operate instead of direct subsidy.

I had no idea this was in Elyria. What is/was the major industry there?

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
I was for this idea until I realized there were 32 bus stops in Public Square. So now imagine all the bus stops on Superior and Ontario in Public Square being moved to the perimeter. It would be a wall of bus stops and buses. And talk about "running the gauntlet" now. You'd have to bust through a wall of people to get to the square. It's the bus stops that are holding us back. It's RTA that's holding this back. People that walk through Public Square now do it out of necessity. Even if you make it more appealing, without solving the bus problem I don't see massive amounts of people suddenly hanging out there anymore than I see people having their lunch in the Greyhound station. You wouldn't have to "run the gauntlet if there were concourses comming up under the perimiter into th square and I don't think it would be that hard. I have seen preliminary TT drawings showing an entrance into TT from withing the square below grade. I know that the street in front of TT is a bridge and that there are spaces in the TT concourse level that go up to the wall of this bridge. On the diametric opposide corner is Key tower and Mall A which is an underground parking garage. Thus, the hole on that side has already been dug. I am sure someone here knows more about this than I do. It would solve all the problems of burrying Superior, closing Ontario and making all the traffic go around the perimiter. People could get into the square under the perimiter with big open ramps, two of which are already almost done. comments please

Bike to work? Show of hands?
I bought a bike specific rain cape for 15 dollars last year and I cannot say enough good things about it. It hangs over your bars and keeps everything dry. I got it on ebay, just search "monkey king" if you are interested. You wouldn't believe how hard these thngs are to find. Thanks for the link. Geez, sorry. Here is a link to a bunch of them, it took me about 5 minutes using google. You can even buy a ten pack for 50 dollars, although one is all you need. http://store03.prostores.com/servlet/themonkeyking/Categories I didn't mean it the way you took it. I found it in about ten seconds myself and ordered one. I meant a genuine "thank you" should have said for the "info" instead of "link". My typing fingers got ahead of my brain. Still freinds (I have enough enemies around here already)?

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
Look, it was a problem to a lesser degree during the Perk administration but it got better or worse depending on who was in office. Sometimes the problem drifted into TT before it was a shopping mall. Then the guys in the "Mountie" hats got hired and chased the kids away. there was a howling about that but everybody got over it. All it takes is the balls to stand up to being called a racist. Forest City did that with the curfew. The same kinds of things can be done in public places. Enforcing littering laws is one way. Yes, there will be a wailing and a howling by civil rights groups. George Forbes and the NAACP would be all over the Mayor (like with West 6th) but it could be done. It does come down to leadership. The only reason we don't have a department store on public square is because of the human conditions there.

Cleveland: Public Square Redesign
The Mayor at that time was Ed Koch. He was a disaster. New York was becoming unlivable and corporations were leaving Manhattan right and left. Garbage on the streets everywhere. Punks and ner'dowells, windshield washer people running amok. you couldn't walk down the street without someone hastling you or worse. Sam Goode was mayor of Philly at the same time. Same thing. New mayors in both cities led their renaissances.

Bike to work? Show of hands?
Have been biking to work now for 15 years. As I get older, it has become much more weather dependant. Initally, year round except January/February. In later years, only in the summer with morning temperatures above 50 Deg. F (ride in to work starts with loosing 400 ft. of vertical-big chill factor). This year, that didn't happen in Seattle reugularly intil July! So this year was a big bust and my scale shows it. Forgot to add, 18 mi. round trip, cumulative elevation gain about 600 ft. Ride time is about a wash with the bus, door to door. 15 min extra time to take a shower/bath after the ride home. Always shower (and sauna!) after the ride in.

Politics or not it is about getting things done. I am afraid it is about politics and you know what I would like to say that I am not allowed to say.

Cleveland: Case Western Reserve University News & Info
$60 X 10(6) for a student center? To woo students? Hmmm.... 60 million would buy a lot of beer and hookers. Seems like that would be a better way to woo students. I mean really, 60 million used to be a lot of money.

The first time I ever had Cassata Cake (probably from Corbo's) I began to understand what heaven must be like. Bought some here in Seattle it wasn't even remotley the same thing.

Cross post. As I read the pop ups to Litt's recent article, it appears that the underground connection to Public Auditorium will be maintained. Can someone verify that I read this correctly?

Cleveland Public Schools: News and Discussion
At my daughter's parochial school, if you missed x number of days you got kicked out. Certaintly motivated my ex-wife to get my 7 yr. old daughter to school when she was threatened with it.

Cleveland: Downtown: East 4th Street Developments
I thnk EC's complaints are warranted. This is supposed to be Cleveland's, and one of the midwest's premiere entertainment districts. The city should be leaning on these owners a little more than in other parts of the city. I would say more but I don't want another suspension.

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
How about using the existing meeting rooms in PA for "low tech" meeting rooms. If the heat, A/C and lights work now, just leave them alone.
-
Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
Obviously I don't know all the details but Public Hall/Auditorium is already there, is already connected, already has meeting rooms, why not just leave it as is and rent the space from the city on an as needed basis?

Cleveland: Downtown: Convention Center Atrium & Expansion
Now that the rooms will be smaller, does it make sense to re-attach Public Hall?

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
That's grounds for a permanent banning. I was never bonkers over the office building either, but it won't be as disconnected to the CBD as some of its critics would want you to believe. It is on the edge of the urban fabric. The Eaton 'campus', on the other hand, would have been disconnected. And, not sure if you heard, but Calfee Halter is moving into the East Ohio Gas Building as an anchor tenant in a major renovation. The Breuer Tower, to my understanding, can not be re-fitted for the Class-A space these tenants are seeking... they might as well stay at Huntington if Breuer was there other option. My preference would have been for these two tenants (Ernst&Young and Tucker, Ellis) would have signed on to be anchor tenants in a new build on either the Jacobs lot on public square or the WHD parking lots. Not that I am against the FEB.... but either of those two options would be better for the City IMHO. I am talking about the newer older East Ohio Gas Bldg. 21 floors. Tried to get a job there once from a law firm on the 21st floor, failed. But, the view of Erieview tower was great!

Cleveland: Flats East Bank
It was low rise. Also, better a low rise office building in the flats canabalizing the CBD rather than a low rise office building in the suburbs canabalizing the CBD. But high rise office building in the flasts canabalizing the CBD? That is going too far!
