JivecityCLE - my trip to the Forest City
A big part of Cleveland's pessimism is a reaction to its stunningly poor leadership (with exceptions) which is fueled by a residual anti-business/pro-poverty streak, or "progressivism" left over from the industial boom of the early 20th century. Most Clevelanders, and suburbanites in particular are aware that Cleveland has vast unrealized potential. The decade after decade inability to capitalize on that potential is what depreses them. Eaton's move to the suburbs is a good example of a fanstastic lost opportunity.

JivecityCLE - my trip to the Forest City
You are correct on both counts. I actually had the chagrin River valley and Chargin river and county line roads in my mind when I wrote my post. I really wish we could reinvigorate our urban forest to once again become the Forest City. I don't think it would be too difficult.

Just an idea. Other than Pittsburg, Cleveland really has the prettiest suburban countryside of any of those cites so maybe the rich were lured by the siren song of Hunting Valley, Kitland Hills, etc. to build thier estates. Same for Akron.

Cleveland: MOCA
Off topic, what don't you like about the Seattle PL? I could write a disertation on everything that is wrong with it but here goes: i) not harminious in size, shape, materials with surrounding buildings; ii) Cheap materials inside and out, interior floor is painted concrete; ii) Garrish interior colors, one floor is all blood red, floor, walls and cielings. Some report vertigo and nausea when inside; iv) Nobody likes it; v) I could go on, the addition to the Cleveland Public library looks like the taj Mahal in comparison.

Tower City Shots (Observation deck and 18th floor)
I am also liking the greening up of the Scranton Penninsula and am thinking that half of it should become....a forest!

Go Akron!

Ohio Intercity Rail (3C+D Line, etc)
Interesting. The State of Washington gave Boeing about 3 billion dollars in tax credits for about 1200 jobs in Everrett Washington for the 787 factory.

KJP!KJP!KJP! Can we just elect you Transportation Emperor?

Cleveland: MOCA
I like it better now that I have seen more renderings and I generally am not impressed by modern architecture. It sure beats the hell out of the new public library we have here in Seattle-what a monstrosity. I think it will look cool in the snow on a sunny winter day.

Cleveland: 2012 Democratic National Convention?
Good Lord man. Whatever the truth may be you don't want to hold up Youngstown to the nation as a symbol of Democratic policy success. The Republicans will take that one to the bank. Am I misunderstanding you?

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad
The new Federal Building is on the far end of where CVSR needs to come into the Terminal from. Why is this a problem?

Do you mean 45 degrees? Rotating a cube 90 degrees along any axis running from the center of the cube through the center of a surface of the cube doesn't change its appearance if all sides have the same surface. Yes, yes 45 degrees. How about a pyramidal roof?

Cleveland: University Circle: Cleveland Clinic Developments
As I watch Cosgrove fight with CWRU, tear down the Art Deco beauty on Carniege and now this I am begining to think he is all talk.

Cleveland: Edgewater Clean-Up Group
Actually, $900 million- so far. About another $800, million to go. http://www.neorsd.org/cso.php http://www.cleveland.com/news/plaindealer/index.ssf?/base/cuyahoga/12539541404330.xml&coll=2 NEOSERD did build some containment tunnels but we could still redirect overfows to far off shore rather than close to Edgewater for goodnes sake. We just don't think edgewater is that important. Another example is Lake Rockwell. There is no reason for Akron to get its water form this man made lake which disrupts the natural flow of the Cuyahoga and thus its water quality. Akron could get all the water it needs from Cleveland but wont for political purposes. The Cuyahoga could be a beautiful river all the way to the navigation channel. Again, water quality and the recreational businesses it could support just aren't that important to us. It is a an attitudinal legacy from Cleveland's industrial past. We don't think of Cleveland as a beach city or the Cuyahoga as a swimable river although they both could be.

Cleveland: Leveraging Citywide LED Contract for Economic Development
In the end he will do neither. No jobs, no lights.

Cleveland: 2012 Democratic National Convention?
What reasons? I think I know where you're going with that, but I disagree. Cleveland, and Cuyahoga County (and Ohio to some degree) and Detroit (and Michigan to a large degree) can be painted as economic laboratories for generational, corrupt Democratic Rule. By having the Democratic convention here that would allow the Republicans to mock the Democrats and show the rest of the country what happens when you put Democrats in charge. Democrats would be much better off going to a prosperous Democratic city, a la Minneapolis.

Beautiful city, beautiful photographs. I like the low hills to the east of Cleveland State. You were there on a really clear day.

Cleveland: Edgewater Clean-Up Group
I can't believe that fixing this is not a priority. It shows that Cleveland does not place significant economic value on its beaches. Another example of how we fail to capitalize on our assets.

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad
That is why we need to bring the CVSR into Terminal Tower. The whole park now becomes foot accessible to everyone living downtown and withing walking distance of the Rapid. Ski train in the winter too!

Cleveland: 2012 Democratic National Convention?
Ain't gona happen. The Democrats will not take their convention to Cleveland for the same reasons they would not take it to Detroit. The Republicans would consider Cleveland though.
-
Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad
This is another one of those "gems" that we in Cleveland don't seem to be able to take advantage of (Akron can and did). Having downtown rail access to a National Park would be huge. There are only a handful of places in the world where you can do this. Add the Zoo via tram or cable car and it would probably generate enough interest in downtown living to justify an apartment/condo development at Tower City or the Scranton Peninsula.

Cleveland Transit History
I think we all agree that the idea of a full subway system in Cleveland is more than dead. I do believe that the completion of the North Coast Transit Center (or whatever it is called) will reopen the discussion about completing the loop for the waterfront line with a portion being underground (maybe a few hunderd feet) to the Terminal Tower.

Cleveland: Downtown: The 9 / Rotunda / County Admin Development
The excuse that the floor plan is too small for county offices is absurd. The city of Seattle bought a 62 story modern skyscraper out of bankrupcy ten years ago and put its municiple offices there. The floor plates can't be bigger than 20,000 square ft.

Cleveland Terminal Tower Observation Deck
Thanks for doing this EC. You really do put your money where your mouth is. Considering your insider position can you find out anything about the status of the 43rd floor outdoor deck?
