Cleveland Transit History
It is just heart breaking to look at those photo's. I remember seeing Mayfield near Green (warrensville center rd?) being dug up to be repaved in the late 70's maybe 1980. They tore it down to the bricks, which still looked good in my oppinion and all the streetcar tracks were still there. They tore those up too and laid down concrete. Sigh.

I thought that the power lines along Mayfield were going to be relocated to the rear of the buildings. What happened with that idea?

Cleveland: MOCA
It doesn't go far enough. Take two cubes, superimposed on each other. Rotate one 90 degrees (any direction) Rotate again 90 degrees about an orthogonal axis. There. Kind of like a Star of David rotated through 360 degrees. I am sure there is an name for this polygon but it has been two many years since I took anyalytic geometry.

Cleveland: Random Development and News
To anyone who goes, please talk up how great it would be to have the 43rd floor putdoor part of the observation deck open as well. Maybe pay and extra $2.00 to go there.

Cleveland: MOCA
Needs a pyramidal roof of the same material. Flat roof=no good.

Ohio Universities and how they affect their cities
"Personally, I think Cleveland is at a disadvantage by not having a "dominant" university associated with it. I know it has Cleveland State and Case, but do they add up to an OSU, UC, UA, or UT? " If you add up CWRU, CIM, CIA, Clevelant State, OCPM, Dike (or whatever it is called now) etc. you probalby get about 35,000 students. That is close to Ohio State and larger than any of the rest.

You've got it backwards. More jobs would attract more students. We already have far more students/graduates than we have jobs for and that has been the case since the 1970's or even earlier.

Could they at least put a pitched roof on the first one?

I'll be G D'd if Cincinnati doesn't look like a miniature New York!

Ohio Universities and how they affect their cities
I will agree with this. Without CWRU, Cleveland Heights would never be able to keep rents where they are.

Cleveland: North Coast Transportation Center
Yep. It sucks. So let's work on the future because we can't change the past. NCTC is a problem for Calabrese because it naturally raises the issue about closing the loop with the waterfront line. That would be a rail project. Best not open that can of worms. On the other hand, if we converted the WFL to a bus line, now Joe could go somewhere with that. Hey how about converting the WFL to bus rapid transit!

So now you're calling Mayor Jackson strong? He has brought these groups together. Actually, there is an 8:30am meeting tomorrow morning where these groups are gathering to begin serious discussions. Absolutely, if he gets this done I will bow down and kiss his ring!

Ohio Universities and how they affect their cities
It is the research and spin off businesses that universities generate that benefits a region and a city, not so much the undergraduate population. Thus, Carnegie Class I rated research institutions have the most impact. CWRU and Ohio State are in the same league in this regard. None of the other Ohio universities are. I am sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

It would take a strong Mayor to bring these parties together and coordinate their efforts.

Cleveland: Suburban Crime & Safety Discussion
Obviously I was not there (living in Seattle as I do) but the behaviour you describe is typical gang behaviour. When a gang perceives a neighborhood at a tipping point, the gang, in an organized fashion spreads mayhem in a neighborhood. Once the local proprietors are intimidated (see negative business consequences) the protection racket starts.

Cleveland's Cultural Gardens
I think there is some change of attitudes in the neighborhood since the 70's. I remember that the lagoon near 105 had to be drained each year to remove the refrigerators and other large appliances that had been dumped there! It appeared that the locals really felt disconnected from regular society and hostile towards it. I think that has changed.

Peak Oil
Cross Posted. This high concentration of methane from a very deep well is predicted by and strong evidence of the abiotic theory of catalytic reformation petroleum genesis: "NEW ORLEANS -- It is an overlooked danger in the oil spill crisis: The crude gushing from the well contains vast amounts of natural gas that could pose a serious threat to the Gulf of Mexico's fragile ecosystem. The oil emanating from the seafloor contains about 40 percent methane, compared with about 5 percent found in typical oil deposits, said John Kessler, a Texas A&M University oceanographer who is studying the impact of methane from the spill. That means huge quantities of methane have entered the Gulf, scientists say, potentially suffocating marine life and creating "dead zones" where oxygen is so depleted that nothing lives. "This is the most vigorous methane eruption in modern human history," Kessler said." More at http://www.cleveland.com/business/index.ssf/2010/06/gulf_oil_full_of_methane_addin.html

Cleveland Terminal Tower Observation Deck
I agree! That's the kicker! At one time this was opened, I believe. My understanding is that is was for a very short period of time when the tower was new. But then, 1929, suicided jumps elsewhere, etc. and it was closed down.

Cleveland Banks
Society for savings was my first bank when I got my first "real" job downtown at age 15.5. impressive then, impressive now.

Cleveland Terminal Tower Observation Deck
I hope the outdoor portion of the deck will open as well.

Ohio Solar Power Thread
This is very relevant for Cleveland. We have lots of graduates with engineering and science degrees but no place for them to work. As a result they leave the area taking with them the investment in made in them by the community. It comes down to jobs, jobs, jobs. When are we going to learn that jobs is job #1. Social justice, equality, etc. etc. is all meaningless in a failing economy.

Cleveland's Cultural Gardens
Based on your photos only, the Gardens are better maintained than they were in the 70's and 80's. I wonder if the busts couldn't be replaced with fiberglass replicas? That would deter theft. I think it would be foolish considering the area and the impossibility of securing a large site like that to replace them with bronze.

It was chopped up prior to it's last renovation. It was a mess.

Cleveland: Downtown: Playhouse Square Development and News
I am really opposed to chopping up the Allen in any way. It is really stunningly beautiful. So what if you can't fill it with 3,000 people most of the time. We used to go to Indians games with only 8,000 in attendance in an 80,000 seat stadium. I am in favor of the new theaters/buildings but please don't desecrate the Allen. These chop jobs never turn out well.
