University of Dayton Flyers Athletics Discussion
Hey. I wish nothing but the best for Dayton, they're the only other school bringing any sort of respectability to this sad sack of a league. But here's an honest question, and I'm not trying to be a smart ass. Does the fact that Dayton's SOS is north of 180 take away from the gaudy record at all? If you don't have the team, sure let up on the scheduling a little bit, no need to pull a temple and continue to schedule teams like you did in the mid 90's. But that kind of SOS is not going to a.) Impress the selection committee, or b.) Prepare a team for success in the tournament. Thoughts?

University of Dayton Flyers Athletics Discussion
I fully expect a matchup of 21-2 Xavier vs. 22-2 Dayton on 2-11. The A-10 needs a signature game like this. I also fully expect the Flyer's to roll over like the paper tigers they are. Your schedule has in no way prepared you for what X will bring.

Cincinnati: Downtown: Queen City Square
I must be thinking of some other city that has dozens of undeveloped surface lots, river banks and Broadway Commons. There are plenty of gaps left.

Cincinnati: Downtown: Queen City Square
I think you hit the nail on the head, and while I think QCS is a worthwhile project and I'll be glad to see it get built, I think we are preoccupied with height a little too much. A healthy city doesn't have to have dozens of new star-scrapers. The city should be looking for developers who are willing to develop smaller 8-10 story buildings to fill in some of the gaps in our business district. Buildings like the first phase of QCS. While I applaud the coming of Cincy's newest tall, I also look forward to seeing some more modest buildings going up in the future.

Cincinnati: Western Hills: Development and News
You mean besides the overwhelming depression one gets at having to look at Glenway Ave? Or is that just me? In general the comments about Western Hills and Glenway being "dangerous" are just west siders being west siders. That said, that whole area w/ Western Hills Plaza and Glen Crossing has been in the dumps for the last 6-7 years at least. I remember it being just OK when I was in high school and positively shocked that an Outback opened up in the old Chi Chi's. No amount of "new" retail (a Target? really? like a new location will miraculously make the whole area better.....) will reverse the decline of that area. It's a poorly designed (I use that word loosely) strip that has an abundance of outdated and vacant strip malls.

Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: Washington Park
That's a little harsh. Whatever happend to taking care of the least of us? I agree the current system makes it too easy to slip into a life of hand-outs and unproductivity, but there are people who genuinely need things like Section 8, welfare and the like. You don't want to toss the baby out with the bath water. That said, these places should not be located in a neighborhood that wants property values to go up and ultimately the free market will push these places out. Their self-righteous owners will be made an offer they can't refuse and the homeless will all move to Springdale.

Cincinnati: Downtown: The Banks
I almost think you need the big chains to make the banks exciting. Save the local and unique restaurants for the CBD & OTR, give visitors and suburbanites a reason to venture off of the river. Bonus What mode of transportation would be best to link all of these neighborhoods together? a.) Motorcycles b.) Segways c.) NOTL Duck Boats d.) Streetcars

Springfield: Development and News
^ Especially when you look at the Destruction of Springfield thread and see the houses they just tore down. My wife has family in Springfield and they all live in condo developments on the edge of 'town.' I use the word loosely b/c to my uneducated eye it looks like Springfield is just a shell. Depressing.

Cincinnati: State of Downtown
I'm sure the lion share of that vacancy is the non-class A office space. Time to convert some of those older office buildings into apartments and condo's.

Cincinnati: Western Bowl / General Custers
Amy I don't think you should expect people to tip toe around so they don't hurt your feelings, I don't think Rando said anything out of line. That said, I enjoyed Western Bowl in my high school days, it was a fantastic place to hang out. Top it off with a late night meal at Perkins and I'll always remember your establishment fondly. Best of luck to your family in your future endeavors.

Let's see how well an adult-oriented theater does in Cincinnati. Paging Larry Flint...

Cincinnati: Downtown: The Banks
Agreed. The Cincy-elitists on this board like to jump NKY for poaching from Cincy. Is it time for Cincy to get revenge or work together for the good of the core? Let's see some development in the Banks that's complimentary to what's already in NOTL and NKY, no need for redundant businesses that will guarantee failure for one of them. Complimentary Examples: hotels(check), residential(check), IMAX(failed at NOTL, might fail at banks), pool hall, bowling, most of which has been proposed on this thread already. ::Jumps in bunker to wait out anti-NKY artillery:: :shoot:

Favorite Music At The Moment?
I have never heard of Cincinnati being the next Seattle, but don't go dissing the Afghan Whigs. They made some of the most soulful, sweaty and dirty rock ever recorded. 1965 still gives me goosebumps whenever I listen to it. Great, great band.

Value City Furniture, a pleasant surprise
Value $hity is one of furniture's best kept secrets. We bought a lot of our furniture there. The couch is just OK, but it was cheap and looks great. We also bought a TV stand and corner desk, both of which are top quality. Great value for your dollar.

Ohio: General Business & Economic News
One quick note about college loans. I'm sure most of you know this, but there is good debt, and bad debt. Good debt provides you with financial leverage so you can attain something that will benefit you, but which you can't afford with your normal cash flows, ie college loans, mortgage etc... Bad debt is debt that does absolutely nothing for you, ie credit cards or even car loans. I know debt is a four letter word to some, but it can really help you out if you use it wisely. Just don't load up the credit cards.

Ohio: General Business & Economic News
Bad idea. I know at least a half dozen people, including family members, who have gone that route and ended up either a.) stopping once they got their associates, these people now work in retail and one is a janitor (not kidding), or b.) taking about 4 more years to finish up their Bachelor's anyway. I know it sounds tempting to finish your first two years of school at a cheaper college and then transfer, but there's just too many variables. My advice is to go to a 4 year university where you can focus on school, have a little fun, and intern somewhere in the summers so you'll have a connection once you graduate.

Can I ask for those strong reasons? As a stakeholder I'm interested in what your concerns are.

Ohio: General Business & Economic News
Some pretty strong conspiracy theorists here... I got my undergrad at XU in Economics and am currently in their MBA program. I was hesitant to get my graduate degree from the same institution, but Xavier is really the only game in town for an MBA (the only one nationally ranked anyhow). I've heard good things about UC's business school but can't comment first hand. In any case I think it matters more how you present yourself and how you interview than where you went to school. The obvious exception would be the top 10 b-schools, your Chicago Universities, Harvards, Thunderbird's, Whartons etc...

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
Born and raised in Price Hill and Delhi. I also have a strong desire to see the city of Cincinnati do well. I fail to realize how you think this is spending your tax dollars poorly? It's an investment, validated by UC Economics Dept, that has a positive ROI for the city. It's a simple as that. How would you spend them?
