Cincinnati: 2008 in Review and Wish List for 2009
^I think when we eventually climb out of this economic crap-hole, we'll be able to look back and admire how well Cincinnati, and really city-centers in general weathered the whole ordeal. Cincinnati is blessed to have many very, very large corporations call it home. These companies, like P&G, Macy's, Kroger, 5/3rd, Convergys etc... will be able to stand up and prop the whole regional economy up with them. Couple that with the on-going trend to live closer to where we play and work, and I think we'll all see Cincinnati come out of this mess just fine and poised for the inevitable upswing. The real kicker is if we get the streetcar finished, or at least fast-tracked during the bad times. If it's up and running or close to it when the economy recovers then the sky's the limit for downtown, OTR, and the core in general. My 2009 wishlist: Full funding found for the streetcars Continued success for 3CDC in all it's endeavor's Smooth construction for QC2 and The Banks

Cincinnati Reds Discussion
He's fast, no doubt. But he's also a judy-hitting, low OBP CF. Sound familiar? I hope he doesn't turn out like Corey Patterson. If he gets his OBP up in the .360's like a couple years ago then I'll be happy. Otherwise......well, I'm glad it's just a two year deal.

Northern Kentucky: Random Development and News
^ It's taken me awhile, but I've really warmed to Monmouth these days. For those of you who hate on NOTL, try walking south on Monmouth (wish you could drive south on it....). It's a very eclectic mix of old time shops, ethnic restaurants etc.....oh, and the brass @ss! What's not to like? I also think that Monmouth, ultimately, is what will drive the Newport economy. NOTL isn't going anywhere, but it's more of an attraction people tend to visit. A healthy business district attracts homeowners who are looking to put down roots.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
Bravo Randy. The more vocal we are, the more out of touch these people will realize they are. I plan on emailing all three. Sadly, the Green Township move is not at all surprising, I've heard this anti-bus sentiment among nearly every westsider I grew up with or have ever known. Also, does anybody take the local Green's (or Jeffre) seriously? THE GREEN PARTY IS AGAINST STREETCARS?!?! Boggles my mind. I'm terribly, terribly discouraged by the actions of these three entities.

Wow, I guess there's nothing like the NAACP to bring otherwise anti-transit folks over to the good side. Thanks Chris!

What is this 'train system' of which you speak? Would it be embedded in the streets? Using a series of 'cars' to 'circulate' pedestrians? Fascinating.

Brinkman is an absolute joke. I mean, the man sued a university b/c of their policy of giving benefits to domestic partners of homosexual staff. What a moron.

Favorite Music At The Moment?
Uh oh. I have a feeling you might have just opened the flood gates. I'll try to help you out before they drown both of us. Coldplay might be the most popular band to hate these days, but there is absolutely no denying their last album, Viva la Vida, is one of the best popular albums of the year. Not only have they completely reinvented their sound, they've pushed their own musical limits and come up with something that's not only ground-breaking, but hella listenable too. From the breathtaking opener 'Life in Technicolor' to the interesting march-step of 'Lost' (if you like JayZ, they just came out w/ a version of this song on their Prospekt March EP that has Hova delivering a verse, fantastic), to the very LostInTranslation-y 'Lovers in Japan' (might just be the title), this album flat out delivers. I was as much of a downer on these guys as you could be. After their great first album, they sort of stumbled with an uneven A Rush of Blood.... and then followed that up with the yawn-fest that is X&Y. Viva la Vida shows what these guys can do if they just stop trying so damn hard to please everyone.

University of Dayton Flyers Athletics Discussion
How about 'em? We've seen this same song and dance from the Flyers before, fast start with some impressive wins, only to see them fade down the stretch and get worked in A10 play. I hope they're the real deal this year, I just don't see them keeping this up w/out a Brian Roberts to bail them out. Wright is good, but he can only do so much. Good luck against Creighton, they're always tough. I'll be watching my Muskies crush the Bobcats of OU tonight. The A10 needs as many non-con wins as possible.

At least it was the same two sticks-in-the-mud who made the cuts. Everybody else still seems to be all for it.

The grey jersey's are XU's 'special occasion' jersey's. I believe, b/c it would have been (and was) Sean Miller's 100th win. Great photo's, you must have had some sweet seats, I was enjoying the game from the lofty heights of section 209. What a great time to be an XU fan. From Gillen to Skip to Thad to Sean, each coach has elevated the program to the point where it's at today. UC just needs to catch up w/ us at this point 8-)

Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: Development and News
Who cares about the turret? The important part is the building is the same height and is perfectly lined up w/ it's neighbors. Same levels and amount of fenestration, and it's brick. If they need to put a turret on it to make it marketable, then more power to them. It is on a street corner too, so i don't think having the turret is that unreasonable. There are plenty of uglier buildings that you can save your wrath for. The bottom line is this is the type of building that needs to be the model for infill in OTR. Nobody that I know of is building true italianate structures anymore.

US Economy: News & Discussion
True story. I work with a guy who bought what could be called a crap-tastic McMansion in NKY. Argued with him all the time about the benefits of living in an urban neighborhood or first gen suburb. A couple of months ago he admitted that he found out that his house (It's either a Drees or Fisher, not sure), was missing a number of cross beams under his first floor. He said the floor had always 'bounced,' but he didn't think anything of it until his wife put her heel through the living room! He broke out he plans, and sure enough, about a half dozen of them were missing. The type of structures that we're building in the suburbs aren't just the architectural equivalent of vomit. They're crappy too. I know I'm preaching to the choir, but if you try to keep up w/ the Jones' you're going to end up living in a pile of crap.

US Economy: News & Discussion
Social mobility may grind to a halt if you don't have the skills/education/will to be socially mobile. Call me crazy, but this 'Service Economy' places a lot more emphasis on education, overall intelligence and entreprenuership than the old Manufacturing Economy. I think there is something very flawed when you let unions dictate how an entire industry is run. There is no sane reason any of these blue collar auto workers should be making what they're making for doing a job that any high school graduate (or drop-out for that matter) can be taught in a few weeks. I also fail to realize how, in any worst-case economic scenario, we will revert back to feudalism. Seems like a stretch to me.

Ohio Cities' Downtown Population
At the same time, the State of Downtown info is usually spot-on. Maybe the 4000-4500 reflects an '08 increase? Who knows.
-
Ohio Cities' Downtown Population
What's the best guess for downtown Cincy's 2008 numbers? With the ongoing development I'm sure it will go up, I just don't know if we should expect an increase of 10 or 1,000....

Ohio Cities' Downtown Population
The psychological boundary exists in where people choose to live and how they identify themselves. But as far as economically and socially, Cincinnati and NKY are much more integrated than some people imagine.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
Don't forget the westside when thinking longterm. I think a map like Randy's is bad politics because the westside is completely ignored. If that's all that ever got built then I agree with you. But the facts are that the central city and eastern first gen 'burbs are simply more progressive and, imho, would be more willing to support such a venture. Westsiders tend to look at me like I have 3 heads when I talk about the streetcars or downtown development. Just the nature of the beast. That said, if this is to become a true city transporation system the westside will have to be included. Certainely a spur through the west-end would be appropriate. As would a connector to Price Hill. Bring back the incline!

Cincinnati: Hyde Park: The Residences at 2801 Erie Avenue
That building in 4 (Michigan Terrace? Did I make that up?) turned out a lot better than I thought it would. The retail on the first floor is done nicely as well, makes the building seem a natural extension of Hyde Park Square. The Residences on the other hand.....well, I'll reserve judgement until they're finished but they look shagadelic, and not in a good way, like maybe Austin Powers lived there....
