Cincinnati: Historic Photos
Post of the year as far as I'm concerned. God those are amazing pictures. Thanks for taking the time to scan all of them. That gorgeous apartment building in # 39 is still there, but is a complete dump. Both of my grandparents grew up near that intersection in price hill. My grandma would talk about how her family would take the streetcars everywhere, to work, down to the river to catch a boat to coney island, up to Mt Adams..... But to this day she still believes that the buses they replaced them with were a better deal because "they could pull over to the curb" :| My grandpa used to say our family had money until his dad (grandfather?) invested it all in a bunch of horses and put them on a car up the Price Hill Incline....which then broke and killed his entire investment. Never was able to verify that, might just be a family myth....

Way to come out of the gates swinging. I love this city.

Who Will Ohio Vote for in the 2012 GOP Presidential Race?
Isn't Jindal a Catholic? The Catholic church does not endorse either creationism or evolution, but they have come out and said that evolution does not conflict with the bible or one's faith. Might not sound like a ringing endorsement, but from the Catholic church it really is. Which makes me think Jindal is just saying he believes in teaching creationism alongside evolution as a way to pander to the social conservatives. Which brings us back to the various camps in the Republican Party....

Who Will Ohio Vote for in the 2012 GOP Presidential Race?
Interesting statement. I agree Jindal is a bright guy, and in all honesty (even though I'm a card-carrying Dem) he might make a pretty decent prez. I don't know if I'd call him the smartest ever. He's got an ivy league education, but so does Barack, and W, and Bill, and HW etc... He was a Rhodes Scholar, but so was Clinton. The way the Republican party is aligned these days, I don't see them being able to nominate an intellectual to run for President.

What Obama may mean for Cities
That's what's always interested me in the fire-breathing, no pork whatsoever, congressman. Of which Chabot was a charter member. That sounds all well and good (who wants wasteful spending after all?) but if everybody else is doing it, and your congressman isn't sending a little back to his/her distrcit, then you're just effectively subsidizing the pork for everybody else....

Go back to the Beta 3 forum software???
Sign me up to go back. I'm having formatting issues when I have the favorites bar open on the side, and when I try to post anything. But other than that it's great

Cincinnati: Downtown: The Banks
It's gotten to the point where I won't even go to Cincinnati.com. It's not just the format (which is still God awful), but the comments just make me in turns depressed, angry and bewildered. I'm hoping it's just the nuts coming out, because it would be really sad to think we live in a region with so many complete morons. I guess if you write a newspaper to cater to morons you're going to have morons commenting on your articles......I'll just keep to the NY Times, WSJ and the Economist. Oh, and of course UrbanOH for any local news 8-)

Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: Development and News
So I'm a little confused on where the water goes. Does it drain through the pavement and then to the water table? Or does the pavement hold it until it evaporates. In either case, that's pretty sweet.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
Facts: 1.) This rate hike would have happened anyway. 2.) We all pay MUCH lower energy costs than we would if the energy market was unregulated. Who ever heard of P&G or GE asking their customers if they mind paying more? Michael, we're all getting something for free here, because we don't pay for our energy in a free market, it's regulated to hell and back by the gov't. This reminds me of the people getting free taco's yesterday who were b!tching they could only get one. 3.) I GUARAN-DAM-TEE you Duke is going to get a postive return on their contribution to the street car program. And they know it. Empty buildings don't use a lot of power do they? That positive return will then let them keep rates lower in the future than they would otherwise be. 4.) It's fairly obvious when somebody grabs onto such a trivial issue when they don't already agree with something and then parades it around as proof of their point. Please. Randy, you made a great analogy about the Duke Energy center. Hey! Great American pays for the naming rights for the reds stadium. Does that mean that my premiums are higher? Not really....BECAUSE THEY ARE GETTING A POSTIVE RETURN ON THEIR INVESTMENT. Name recognition = more customers, more customers = the more you can leverage economies of scale and make more money. This entire thread makes my head hurt. Hooray for the streetcars still being on track (har! oh crap!).

Definitely great news. Duke's onboard and we have 70% of the funding lined up. Silver lining folks, silver lining.....

Cincinnati: Restaurant News & Info
rekxu83 replied to The_Cincinnati_Kid's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentI always thought it was strange that Jean Robert hasn't bought it. With all of his other ventures, one would think he'd go back to his roots and try to resurrect the Maisonnete brand.

Let's hope they announce they have the lion share - if not all - of the financing lined up.

Cincinnati: Lyric Piano Co. Building
Just a beautiful building. I'm glad they saved it from the corporate neglect that seems to affect too many of these treasures. Great restoration job too, looks like a great place to call home.

Light rail? We do have train tracks going right across Cleanay, I wonder if that right of way is still intact along the entire line.... Let's get some street car action right up victory parkway. Make the line start in Mt Adams (maybe connect with a new Incline??) and end at XU. You could even connect it to whatever Uptown loop is going in. I can see a line like that being very well used.

All I'm saying is I can't wait for basketball to start. Got my season tickets in the mail this week. I don't care if I have to park in a surface lot, parking garage, a ditch, or have David West valet my car.....I'm just happy to be there.

Cincinnati: State of Downtown
Am I reading that chart right? Were we really less than 5% in 1998? That's amazing to me. I'm also glad we're in the group that has higher vacancies in the suburbs. Places like Detroit and KC have their work cut out for them.
-
Cincinnati: State of Downtown
Even given the nature of the crappy reporting....This tells me that some of the suburban office parks in both OH and KY are emptying to the benefit of downtown Cincy. 15.2% is still frighteningly high, although it's probably par for the course in the midwest.
-
Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: School for the Creative & Performing Arts
Unfortunately that seems to be par for the course with pretty much all of CPS' new school buildings.

It does look nice. I stand corrected.

The Tallest Building in the World: The Contenders
I agree to a certain extent, and a place like Dubai - where they've already thrown good city planning out the window* - is a great place to try this sort of thing. But there has to be a practical purpose (like a lack of land, stratospheric demand for office space etc..). I can't think of a practical reason to build a 2.4 km building anywhere on the planet. *to their credit, i guess you can't have a traditional transit oriented, walkable city when it's about 5,000 degrees out every day. I think they are putting light rail in down Shiek Zayed road, so that's a positive step.

That Metro'park' makes me appreciate our riverfront parks in Cincy even more. It looks like they just plopped a couple of benches down, mowed the grass and called it a park....

Cheviot, Ohio
I agree, Cheviot's bar scene is surprisingly strong. It's a decent place to go if you're getting burnt out on the regular scenes. As far as Cheviot investing more in their downtown and store fronts....I wouldn't hold my breath on that one. The majority of west siders don't put much stock in planning like that....see Glenway, Delhi Pike, Rybolt exit etc....
