  1. Let's tone this down a bit. The westside bashing is unecessary and these "ultra conservative and lame" people currently have a Democratic rep that they elected who supports the streetcar.

  3. Can we finally put this to rest? The Cincinnati Metro Area (as has been stated previously in this thread and the Cincinnati population thread) is growing. This is not a zero-sum game. The region is adding about 7% every 10 years, or ~150k. Cincinnati is simply trying to capture a larger piece of that growth by building the streetcar and making the core of the city a more attractive place to live. If we had the population challenges of Detroit, Buffalo or even Cleveland, then your talk about extra infrastructure might be relevant. We don't.
  4. Did I miss the announcement? Are we running the streetcar all over Ohio now? Nice! Can you tell me what the US Census projects for the Cincinnati MSA? That might be relevant to this conversation.

    Natural Increase. This line of questioning has left me absolutely baffled. Is our MSA not growing? Adding about 150k every 10 years or so?? That's plenty of home-growth, and even a small fraction of that moving downtown, uptown or OTR would go a long way. Let's take a big step back and look at this from a macro perspective. We don't need millions of asians or other immigrants to move here for us to redensify our core and help the city of Cincinnati have a healthier mix of residents.

    Watched it last night. Had absolutely no idea just how many odd little parks the system has. I thought it was a fantastic overview of the whole system. The pictures of Eden park as a full blown water resevoir were great, as well as the pictures of the old Lincoln Park where Union Terminal now sits. Did anybody catch where that stone slide is? It's outside of some nature center but I didn't hear them name the park. I remember going to camp there a looong time ago and loved that slide....

    Bingo. Not only does Cincy have 9 Fortune 500 HQ's in it's MSA, it has no less than 5 in downtown alone, including two (P&G and Kroger) that are Fortune top 25, and Fortune Global top 50 companies. What I take away from this post (which is very informative, bravo) is that even poorly planned rail transit can have a positive impact in even the most bombed out and economically depressed cities in our country. Edit: Buffalo has exactly NO Fortune 500 companies. Rail, for all it's benefits DanB, can't create F500 companies out of thin air.   13. Fun times in the Cincy hinterlands, no? Traffic was backed up a mile in both directions on I-75 from this mess. Glad I only have to drive by this thing when I'm coming home from vacation. Blows my mind that all those people think they're getting a deal on this crap.

    All economic activity can be boiled down into two actions, value creation and value capture. One could make a very persuasive arguement that unions help the companies they work for tremendously in the department of value creation. They are generally of a higher skill set (even if just slightly) than their non-union counter parts. This is where their benefit to society ends. Because any company who employes union labor must necessarily fail to capture a significant amount of the value created. This value instead is captured by the union in the form of above market wages and benefits. In every industry where there are both union and non-union work forces, the companies that are saddled with union labor are at an enormous disadvantage. Edit: I thought this was the other union thread, so I apologize for being slightly off-topic. The teamster's, btw, are hilarious....and scary.
  16. Absolutely, and if COAST in general was as reasonable and thoughtful as 8th & St, then we would be having a much more civilized debate. Unfortunately, as the Enquirer pointed out, the slick wording they put in the charter amendment all but destroyed any chance of having a meaningful debate about the streetcar.
  17. Diverse opinions are one thing, but this man-crush on COAST is getting a little out of hand. It's not the beliefs and opinions of these people that have everybody up in arms (though I find them to be short-sighted and provincial), it's their tactics. The same tactics that some have gushed over in this thread previously - standing outside of bars to get intoxicated people to sign their 'trolley petition,' not mentioning to these same people that if you actually support the street car then you shouldn't sign, raising holy hell whenever the city wants to invest in it's own future, even tricking their political allies (NAACP and turning the issue they care about into one that fits COASTs agenda, streetcar to rail), etc...etc... Anybody who makes a living in this great metro area of ours should be trying to shout down these people whenever and wherever they show up. Their agenda will have lasting harm on our economy and, if successful, will turn Cincinnati into a backwater. There is absolutely nothing to admire about them.

A proposed city charter amendment on this November's ballot has not only altered the debate over the city's plan for a $185 million, riverfront-to-Uptown fixed-rail streetcar route, it has all but obliterated it. It has sucked the air out of any substantive discussion about such a system's actual merits. Instead, public debate - no doubt as the amendment's creators, avowed streetcar foes, intended - has focused on an acrimonious disagreement about what its wording actually means and what its effect would be: Is it about the streetcar? Or is it about more than the streetcar?

  22. Shocking how most of the conversation on Urbanohio would be about the three most urban cities in the state. It's simple demographics, more people live in those three metro's than in any other part of the state, so more people post on here about them. I'm sure the Scranton people on UrbanPA complain that everybody talks about Philly and Pittsburgh; such is life.

  24. Funny. I just heard Cincinnatian's for Progress' most high profile member on the afternoon show on 700 WLW the other day. He certainely wasn't on there to talk about the weather.
  25. ^ I'll take that first picture to describe Cincinnati's economy. With its low cost of living and resilient and well-balanced blend of industries (everything from aerospace to advertising), Cincinnati topped our charts for best economy. Edit: Yellow Springs also made their list of top 10 small towns.
