AP: "Empty Neighborhoods Fill Rustbelt"
If OTR is empty, at this point it's by choice. By that I mean the powers at be (3CDC) obviously prefer vacant buildings to tennaments full of subsidized housing. While the article isn't necessarily false, it was just bad timing and lazy journalism to not dig a little deeper into the details. The Gateway Quarter is still relatively small in relation to the rest of OTR, but give it a few more years.

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
So we make the stops farther back right? This is not an insurmountable obstacle. In fact, I hesitate to call it an obstacle at all. If it was such a big problem for Metro I'm sure they would have asked to have the stops moved already.

A touch of Cincy
^I'm no architect, but I always thought it looked cool; like they sat a new building on top of an old one. I can appreciate how some may not like it though.

Randy can't say he didn't deserve that one  Great shots UR, I never get tired of looking at the University Club.

LIG, solid, solid work man. The Dean truly is a broken record; when acknowledging the correctness of your drawings he said they 'raise new questions.' Like 'well that's shot, what new angle can I attack the streetcar on now?' Don't worry, he'll come up with something I'm sure.

The homeless haven't managed to scare away development along the streetcar route in Portland either.

Cincinnati Bengals Discussion
By all accounts the Bengals put together a very solid draft. 1. Andre Smith, OT, Alabama 2. Rey Maualuga, LB, USC 3a. Michael Johnson, DE, Georgia Tech 3b. Chase Coffman, TE, Missouri 4. Jonathan Luigs, C, Arkansas 5. Kevin Huber, P, Cincinnati 6a. Morgan Trent, CB, Michigan 6b. Bernard Scott, RB, Abilene Christian 7a. Fui Vakapuna, FB, BYU 7b. Clinton McDonald, DT, Memphis 7c. Freddie Brown, WR, Utah The first 5 picks all project to be starters, with the first 3 possibly starting right away. They got a lot of value. It will be interesting to watch what happens with Bernard Scott. He has some serious character issues, wound up playing in DII, but is a fantastic talent nonetheless.

Cincinnati Reds Discussion
Let's take off the red colored glasses. This is not a stellar team. Pitching is good to very good. Offense will be a struggle all season. You don't remove your most productive offensive player, hardly upgrade anywhere else, and get better. Votto and Bruce are the real deal. Outside of them? Phillips is a hitter who doesn't walk, and those guys absolutely KILL you when they're in a slump. Dickerson is too streaky. Bring up Rosales and put him in the outfield.

The view from Carew
Nice shot! You inspired me enough to drag the 8 month pregnant wife up there before the Reds game today. Hadn't been up there in years. If you look at the North face of Carew you'll see some scaffold set up at the very top. They have the north 3rd of the observation deck blocked off because of this. Huge bummer, but it was still great.

New Yankee Stadium
The Imperial March from Star Wars keeps going through my head when I look at this stadium. Not sure if it's the architecture or the Yankee's organization that's causing it... Definitely agree it is a step above the last decade and a half of ballparks. This stadium makes a statement befitting the franchise that plays there.

Downtown Indianapolis, part 1
Competition? I like me some Indy. Does it have the character and breathtaking geography that Cincinnati does? No. But like you mentioned they do a lot of things right. Great brick streets and beautiful sidewalks throughout. Great set Zach.

Cincinnati Reds Discussion
Went to my first game of the season today. New additions to the ballpark look great, including new scoreboard. Love what they've done to 4192 club. Club seats are expensive (only here b/c I got them from work), but this year you get free food - Larosa's, montgomery inn pulled pork sandwiches, nacho's, hot dogs, hamburgers, ice cream and drinks. Tons of kids running around eating themselves into oblivion, if you've got the jack this is the perfect place for kids. Bronson didn't look so hot after his nice 3-0 start. Settled down a bit after his first 2 innings but did not look very good. I'm ready for the inevitable callup for Rosales. Kid is hitting .400+ at Louisville and this team needs offense.

an effort to save flint, michigan by shrinking it
Sounds dangerously like the suburban planning model of the last 60 years.

an effort to save flint, michigan by shrinking it
I think this is a fantastic idea by Flint. It makes no sense to try and support infrastructure built for 200,000 people when you only have half that population currently. I hope they opt for entire neighborhood removal like it sounds like they're doing. If they just try and tear down piecemeal then nowhere in Flint will be pleasant to live. C-Dawg...just...wow.

Cincinnati: Housing Market / Affordable Housing
Good point.

Cincinnati: Housing Market / Affordable Housing
The section 8 naturally gravitated towards the west side because property values have historically been lower than those on the east side (and MUCH lower than places like Hyde Park and Mt Lookout). This is absolutely an 'F YOU' to the eastside. That said, it's not necessarily the wrong thing to do. Poverty should definitely be disbursed, and there's no gain if we move the concentration from the inner city to the west side.

Wilmington: General Business & Economic News
I'm very happy with this move. Like the article mentions, DHL used to operate this facility at CVG before they moved to the Wilmington airport. Hopefully the vast majority of workers hired will be ex-employees from Wilmington. It's unfortunate the city of Wilmington has already been decimated by this whole tragedy.

Xavier University Musketeers Athletics Discussion
I love how people say X should get out of the A10, as if we haven't tried. The Big East didn't want two programs in Cincinnati and no other BCS conference takes basketball-only members. Congrats to coach Mack. St X and XU grad. He knows what Xavier stands for and I hope he chooses to stay for the long run.

Ohio Census / Population Trends & Lists
Cincinnati should show a modest gain in the city, with a bigger gain in the metro area (including northern kentucky and south eastern Indiana). I'm thinking things don't look good for the rest of the state....

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
I don't want to get too far off topic, but what do you do with the waste? Is there a good answer for that, other than just burying it somewhere? That is the answer. The amount of waste, in terms of pure mass, is not that much. I remember reading that almost all of the nuclear power plants in the US still store their waste in temporary on-site facilities. The french obviously have better alternatives and they would be the natural source to turn to if the US ever gets serious about nuclear.

Poll: Do you want kids?
We're going the cloth route as well. Registered for a crapload (no pun intended) of them, they make a great shower present for somebody who doesn't want to shell out $30. We also went to the cloth diapering seminar at Park + Vine, which I highly recommend for anybody looking to raise a little granola baby. The ladies there know what they're doing.

Poll: Do you want kids?
I better want them, my first is due in early June. The wife and I are of the opinion that it's better to have them early, we're 25 and 26. If I have my way (and I'm under no illusion I will), we'd have 3-4 and we'd be done by the time we're in our early 30's. I want to enjoy my retirement...
