Moody's reduces Mansfield's bond rating to 'average' Downgrade's effect likely minimal Sep 22, 2011 | Written by Linda Martz MANSFIELD -- The Moody's Investors Service decision to downgrade the City of Mansfield's municipal bond rating will have little short-term effect, because the city has no immediate plans to borrow for any large-scale projects, a top city official said Wednesday. Finance Director Kelly Blankenship said the only fallout from the downgrade, issued Aug. 25, was that when the city considered a plan to replace police and fire department vehicles through lease-purchase arrangements, one bank out of the six to eight banks approached commented on it. That bank's concern was based partly on the number of elected offices on the November ballot, and uncertainty over whether those elected would support the city's current fiscal recovery plan, Blankenship said. Richland County jobless numbers decline Sep 21, 2011 | Written by Bryan Bullock MANSFIELD -- Unemployment dropped sharply in Richland County last month, echoing a trend across the state. The jobless rate decreased 1.3 percent from July to August, bringing it to 10.1 percent, according to seasonally unadjusted estimates released Tuesday by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. The unemployment rate in Mansfield fell 0.6 percent to 10.7 percent during the period. Unemployment typically declines this time of year as back-to-school shoppers help fuel the economy. Rates fell in all 88 Ohio counties last month. url=http://www.mansfieldnewsjournal.com/article/20110921/NEWS01/109210306/Richland-County-jobless-numbers-decline]Read More...[/url]

Malabar's Big House crumbling 6:42 AM, Sep. 18, 2011 | Written by Jami Kinton LUCAS -- One of north central Ohio's jewels is in peril. Malabar Farm's "Big House," listed on the National Register of Historic Places, needs major repairs -- and funding. "It is in dire straits," Malabar Farm State Park manager Jason Wesley said. "There are over 70 wood structures on the farm, and it takes a lot of funding to keep them up the way they should be. "Our needs are so great because of the nature of the place. For the Big House, you can't just slap on vinyl siding and be done with it. Would (author Louis) Bromfield have done that? My guess is, probably not." Read More...

North Main beautification begins with dump site Sep 17, 2011 | Linda Martz News Journal MANSFIELD -- The North Main Street Beautification Committee's first major project could start next week. Mansfield Bag and Paper owner Paul Goldman agreed Thursday to donate $5,000 to the Richland Community Development Group to clean up a triangular piece of land on the southwest corner of North Main and Harker streets. At-Large Councilman Doug Versaw, convener for the North Main Street committee, said the money would be used to pay Jacobs Excavating to remove the foundation of a previous commercial building and trees from a nearby wooded area, and to landscape the area with a mix of trees and shrubs. The woods north of downtown contain tires and other debris, Versaw said. Read More...

It's about time this place was renovated. I might take picture when I'm in town Friday. Uncle John's Place renovations a hit Aug 31, 2011 | Written by Lou Whitmire MANSFIELD -- Uncle John's Place has undergone a massive restoration, exposing the downtown eatery's historic architecture. Tom Acevski, who spearheaded the construction, said the renovation was altered to fall in line with historic preservation efforts downtown. He hopes the project has made the stretch of South Main Street attractive, complementing ongoing renovations next door at Mechanics Savings Bank. Original hardwood floors and red brick behind the bar, areas once covered by tile and carpet and a large canopy, are now on full display. New booths, cherry woodwork and a restored bar greet guests as they enter the airy dining area. Read More

Firm thinks outside the box on Mansfield beautification Written by Linda Martz MANSFIELD -- Design consultants admitted feeling nervous about the reception they might get for the Main Street Beautification Plan unveiled Wednesday. Tony Slanec, director of planning and urban design for Bird Houk, said his Gahanna-based firm initially was hired to come up with two sets of designs for improvements recommended to make the northern gateway to Mansfield more attractive. The Richland Community Development Group was to sort through the plans, settle on one, then seek funding. Read More... The Proposal

Keith, I have never stumbled home drunk wanting to hook up with any of my straight, male roommates. As a matter of fact, we often went out and got drunk together. It seems to me that any straight man who is comfortable with his sexuality, wouldn't worry about rooming with a gay man. I hope you weren't being serious, but from your past posts on gays, I'm not so sure.
