  1. Mayday - I saw The Big Gay Musical (which is hilarious and I recommend that everyone see it) and I had planned on seeing Out of Place, but my friends and I didn't want to wait that long (it didn't start until 9:20) and didn't want to spend another $10 for a movie. Thanks everyone, glad you enjoyed the photos. I am not sure whether or not I like the new CSU student center, it looks really bland. I wish they would have done something similar to Akron's student union.

  3. Went up to Cleveland yesterday for the Cleveland International Film Festival and took some pictures while on my walk around downtown. Got kicked out after taking this picture. But took another one before leaving.
  4. GM will occupy metal center through 2010 BY LOU WHITMIRE NEWS JOURNAL • MARCH 19, 2010 ONTARIO -- General Motors Corp. will occupy the Mansfield/Ontario Metal Center until Dec. 31, contrary to earlier announcements the plant will close by June. Mayor Larry Collins told City Council on Thursday he learned the news at a Wednesday meeting with Motors Liquidation officials, owners of the GM plant. Motors Liquidation representatives gave a report to the newly formed Richland Community Development Group. "Even though Motors Liquidation owns the building they really have no say-so with what's going on there right now," Collins said. "Once General Motors is out, they will follow up with their plan, which is to try and find a tenant, which they are currently doing. Secondly, they'll try to sell the building. ... If they can't find a tenant ... thirdly, they will (begin) demolishing the building."
  5. More silos = less waiting for farmers at co-op BY LOU WHITMIRE NEWS JOURNAL • MARCH 18, 2010 MANSFIELD -- Town & Country Co-Op's $5 million expansion will nearly triple its storage capabilities and get trucks off North Main Street faster. The project, which should be completed by August if weather permits, also will shorten the wait for farmers bringing crops to the grain elevator. Al Holdren, CEO of Ashland's Town & Country, said the plan has been in the works for about three years. It will include construction of a second pit to receive grain. That will enable Town & Country to double the receiving speed, getting trucks off the street faster during harvest. Read More...
  6. Crestline glass plant is hiring BY LOU WHITMIRE News Journal • March 17, 2010 CRESTLINE -- Pittsburgh Glass Works is experiencing growing pains, and north central Ohio workers are benefiting. The operation, formerly known as PPG, hired 200 employees between 2008 and the start of this year. Now the company is looking to hire 40 to 60 more to fill a growing demand for automotive glass. "It's a great problem to have," said Jim Phillips, human resources director at the 5066 U.S. 30 plant near the Crawford-Richland county line. "The majority of those have really been (hired) since September of last year, about 110 to 120 since that time, and we're getting ready to bring on another 25. It's a large number." Read More...

  8. Mansfield home sales down, but prices up By TERRICHA BRADLEY • News Journal • March 4, 2010 MANSFIELD -- The number of Mansfield-area home sales dropped in January, after a surge at the end of 2009, but prices jumped compared to a year ago. The Mansfield Board of Realtors shows 55 January home sales through its Multiple Listing Service, including Galion. That's down about 24 percent from 72 sales in January 2009. "January is not the greatest sales month," board president Jim Walker said. "The average dollar volume is down because of the weather and (economic) circumstances." Read More...

  12. Magic runs out for carousel shop Fourth Street business is 'in mothballs' By LOU WHITMIRE • News Journal • February 26, 2010 MANSFIELD -- Ross Clark and Sherrill Anderson have carved out a little piece of Americana in their West Fourth Street shop that is recognizable across the country. But soon Carousel Magic's co-owners, who have designed and built carousels for 16 years here, will close their doors. "We're putting the building in mothballs on the off chance we get a job, but that looks pretty unlikely at this time," Anderson, 62, said Wednesday. "If we don't get a project in a month or so, we'll have to liquidate all the equipment." ... Read More...

Fight HIV with HIV: 'safe' virus proposed as vaccine 00:01 19 February 2010 by Andy Coghlan A company is planning to inject people with an HIV vaccine made of the deadly virus itself, albeit a deactivated version. Vaccines against many viruses, including flu, are made from deactivated versions of those viruses, but such an approach was previously dismissed as too risky in the case of HIV. Now Virxsys of Gaithersburg, Maryland, is resurrecting the controversial approach, thanks to successful tests of a similar vaccine against SIV – also known as simian HIV – in monkeys. Read More...

  15. Stockton is Lima or Mansfield with palm trees. Umm, Mansfield's unemployment is not as bad as Stockton's and I am pretty sure that we have a much lower crime rate. Plus, we have a carousel, which makes everyone pretty freaking happy. :)
  16. $20-Million Grant for Multimodal Transportation Center Announced Transportation Center Announced Emily Vincent | 02/17/2010 Congressman Tim Ryan of Ohio today announced that the Kent Central Gateway project in Kent, Ohio, has received a $20-million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. Ryan delivered the exciting news to a roomful of officials from the City of Kent, Kent State University and PARTA (Portage Area Regional Transportation Authority) who lobbied together for the transportation facility for several years. The project serves as a catalyst for the revitalization and redevelopment of downtown Kent and reconnects the central business district with the Kent State campus. The $20-million TIGER (Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery) grant for the Kent Central Gateway alone accounts for the majority of grants awarded to the state of Ohio. In total, the state is receiving $50-million in TIGER grants. “The TIGER grant has been very, very competitive,” Ryan said. “We wanted to advocate projects that will transform communities and offer long-term economic growth. We feel this project is transformational, and we advocated strongly for the Kent Central Gateway project.” “The multimodal transportation facility combines elements of buses, pedestrians, bicycles and cars,” explained John Drew, general manager of PARTA. “It will serve as a transfer point that allows bus transport to Akron, Cleveland and all points in Portage County. It is part of the downtown development plan and will be located at Erie and Depeyster streets with a curb cut into Haymaker Parkway.” ... Just a little correction, the actual city of Cleveland lost population at a slower rate than most of its suburbs, meaning the rate of population loss in Cleveland has slowed down. Well, not saying you're wrong, but that fact alone won't prove it: It could also simply mean that the rate of population decline in the suburbs has accelerated even more. That is true, but I think the amount of people leaving the city was also less than it was in previous years, but I don't remember where the article/post I got that from is, so...

  20. If they are going to extend the blue line across that horrendous intersection, then why not go ahead and expand the rail line to North Randall? From the sound of the article, it seems like RTA will be seeking input on whether or not to use rail, bus/rapid transit, buses with limited stops, or streetcars; so, at least this isn't set in stone.

AK Steel recalls 284 employees Labor Dept. to revisit unemployment entitlement claim By LOU WHITMIRE • News Journal February 4, 2010 MANSFIELD — About 284 workers laid off from AK Steel Corp.'s Mansfield plant have secured one victory this year -- all are back at work. The last of those employees, who were laid off during the worst of the recession, returned to work late last month, said Brian Speelman, president of United Steelworkers of America Local 169. Hourly union employees are working three shifts, seven days a week. With steel demand improving, workers at the Mansfield plant are halfway through a six-week work cycle. They will be laid off for two weeks in mid-February before returning to the job for another six weeks in early March, Speelman said. ...
