  1. ethlaw[/member] - You're right, this townhouse proposal is not located where the Parkview is, but I think that KJP[/member] was hinting that there might be a future development proposed for where the Parkview is currently located.
  2. If you honestly think that your experience as a straight, white male who's family is from Appalachia is the same as other people's experiences (i.e. people who don't fit your description), then I don't know if it is worth even discussing this with you. But as far as Mexicans getting along with Appalachian folk, lol, yeah....maybe for my fellow Mexicans who are white, but that inclusion pretty much ends if you're unwilling to sell out your heritage (how many self-respecting Mexican Americans would put up with the blatant racism and anti-Mexican sentiment that white people/Appalachians/Trump supporters project?) or if you are not white presenting. Also, I used to work for a CDC that serves a neighborhood that has a mix of Latinos, African Americans, and white people of Appalachian decent and oh boy, do they not like outsiders, especially people who are not white. The amount of times I had to hear about how no one helps them out or how the area is being taken over by "those" people... Oh, and I would not say that Old Brooklyn is primarily an "inner-city" Appalachian community, but my experiences with residents from those areas are anecdotal, but if you are truly interested in this and want statistics for these neighborhoods of which you speak, perhaps you could do your own work instead of relying on the "nerds on this site" to do it for you.
  3. audidave[/member] - as someone who once managed the side yard program for a CDC that served a distressed community/food desert; without an active community that also has the business know how, community gardens can actually turn out to be a mess (not having the support to sustain and maintain the garden or the knowledge to get the produce to market). Not saying that community gardens couldn't contribute to improving healthy food access, but it needs to be a broad, well supported community effort and it isn't the only solution. There are already a TON of community gardens/urban farms on the east side, and although that is an improvement, it isn't the only factor or solution to the problem. It is my opinion that access to healthcare, classes that teach residents how to cook with produce from the gardens/how to cook quick/healthier meals, better employment opportunities, and access to full service grocery stores could do much more in improving the situation. What's the benefit of a community garden when the residents in the area don't have the time to cook healthy meals because it is far cheaper and easier to go to a fast food restaurant, especially for a family where parents work odd hours at multiple part time jobs that do not pay above minimum wage.
  4. Over a year ago I went to Seattle for a little vacation and I'm finally posting the pictures I took while I was there. I'm sure a lot has changed since I was there last year, but I had a wonderful time and really loved the city and wanted to share some of the photos from my trip. Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 [
  5. ColDayMan[/member] - I thought about going there but then decided against it. I ended up going to Dick's down the street surfohio[/member] - Incredibly vibrant, highly recommend visiting TBideon[/member] - Me too! If only I could live in Cleveland and Seattle. And jking222222[/member] not much different than Cleveland then, minus the cost difference. jmecklenborg[/member] - Think I was there at the right time...saw the plane before it took off so wasn't taken by surprise.

  7. clvlndr[/member] - Thanks! And I was surprised by the weather too. It was beautiful for most of my trip, although it did rain a couple of times. And I've never been to SF, so I'm not sure how it compares, but Seattle was beautiful and I had a great time...a little too much of a good time my last night there, but worth it. jmecklenborg[/member] - My roommates were pretty quiet and I got along with them. We actually went out together a couple of times. And their transit, including their bus transit, was amazing and part of the reason why I loved the city so much. When I was there only one of the streetcars had opened, I think the second one opened up a week after my trip, but the light rail line was super convenient. MyTwoSense[/member] - Who are you? Oh wait, you're that strange man who lives in Shaker Circle surrounded by an absurd amount of shoes. ColDayMan[/member] and UrbanSurfin[/member] - Thanks!
  8. Over a year ago I went to Seattle for a little vacation and I'm finally posting the pictures I took while I was there. I'm sure a lot has changed since I was there last year, but I had a wonderful time and really loved the city and wanted to share some of the photos from my trip. Part 1 Last year I was still working at a non-profit and not making much, so I minimized costs as much as I could on this trip, which included staying at a hostel. Although sharing a room with complete strangers isn't always the most ideal situation, I had a great time and the free breakfast was a welcomed amenity. Not to mention, Pikes Place was right out the front door, which is where this little photo tour begins... Part 2 Part 3
  9. Honestly, the local design review districts, landmarks commission, and planning commission are not consistent in their decision making, so it is very difficult to know how to satisfy them. It seems like what they look for changes every couple of months. A form based code could help a lot in this regard and would prevent those committees and commissions from making so many arbitrary decisions.
  10. This is pretty much what landmarks said.
  11. Re W.44: Can't say for sure, but from the rendering it appears it will either be a demo + new construction or a facade makeover of the ugly Ohio City furniture store and its neighbor, the motorcycle place (which is more attractive with its exposed brick) plus a 1-storefront expansion to the attractive Victorian structure (currently an art gallery?) to immediately to the east. I would guess the latter since the building at the W. 44 corner appears large and solid... but that's just my take. Can't say much, but the rendering is conceptual and was created to gain local design review and landmarks commission feedback. It would be a demo+new construction and both design review and landmarks said they liked it overall but would like the building to look modern, to not emulate an historic building, and to fit in with the context of the neighborhood. They also would like for it to be taller.
  12. Yes, this will be the Lake Link Trail, which will link Whiskey Island/Wendy Park to the Tow Path Trail. The SPACES sign was removed this week, that's what the crane was for. Some additional roof work has been going on as well. As for the plans for the building...it's a renovation project with historic tax credits that will transform it into a mixed-use building containing retail/commercial space as well as 11 luxury apartments. Project should be completed March 2017. Michelle Jarboe did an article about the project back in 2014, don't know if anything has been published about the project since then.
  13. KJP[/member] yes, it will remain commercial.
  14. I went to Table Top last night and noticed that Weenie a Go Go on W. 25th had closed. Couldn't find any mentions of the restaurant on here, but they were basically a hipster/vintage version of Old Fashioned Hot Dogs crossed with Happy Dog's "gourmet" hot dog. Never got around to going there and never really heard anything about the place, so probably won't be missed. Also noticed that 1822 W. 25th has a permit to establish a carry out pizza place (next to what used to be Johnnyville Woods).
  15. The building they are moving into is definitely on the west bank. It was Right location, wrong building.
  16. Agreed, the historic stock of buildings in downtown Pittsburgh was great and the amount of historic rehabs alongside new construction was amazing. The area was also very walkable and I also liked the transit fare zones, with all transit downtown being free.
  17. Thanks guys! And mrnyc[/member] yeah, I was surprised by the amount of activity going on downtown. Wish I could have seen more of the city.
  18. Here's the second part of my visit to Pittsburgh last June. Part 1 Part 2 Do you ever have infrastructure envy? My camera died so I had to switch to my phone. After having walked all over downtown for several hours on a rather hot summer day (and after a night of excessive drinking), I called it quits and headed back to my car. Pittsburgh was a rather pleasant surprise, looking forward to an actual visit. Hope you enjoyed my little tour!
  19. I guess I missed it when I first saw the article, but the photos of what the sculptures look like in real life are MUCH better than the renderings. However, I feel like the rendering of the lawn on public square looks really crowded and detracts from the new square. Guess I'll have to wait and see what it looks like when installed. But still, I'm glad it's temporary.
  20. I was thinking the same thing. Seems like LAND Studio has lost it's touch, the last couple projects they've worked on/proposed are disappointing and uninspired.
  21. Last June I was in Pittsburgh for a bachelorette party and decided to walk around the city before heading back to Cleveland. The hotel we stayed in was across the river in the Station Sqaure area and from there I headed towards to Fort Pitt/Point State Park. Part 1 Part 2 Part 2: Click Here
  22. I think part of the delay was a result of land swap deals between the city, Carnegie Companies (Clifton Retail/Lucky's developer), and Brickman/Brickhaus Partners (townhouse developer), all of which was waiting on the church demo.

Looks like Councilman Dow has paid his taxes. It won't let me give a link but the address is 7715 Decker Ave. (PPN: 106-05-078), just input that info into the auditor's website. He could have recently paid them though, he did have a delinquent balance and did not pay his taxes last year. I believe the Auditor updates pretty regularly.
  24. One element of their new signage plan, see more here.
  25. True, with TOD/FBC minded planning it could be fixed, but I don't have much faith in our traffic engineers.
