  1. Thanks, Mendo. I didn't think to look under the landmarks commission agendas.
  2. When is this going before the planning commission? I couldn't see it on their website.
  3. ^Thanks for the pics. As for the shipping containers...I think that if done right, they can be very awesome. Creative way to lower construction costs and in some instances they can be used as placeholders for future development. I think the following are interesting projects:

Sorry to revive an old thread but I didn't want to make a duplicate. Anyways, I was wondering, is there a way to alert someone when their inbox is full? I've been trying to reply to a PM but it won't send because their inbox is full and I don't know how to get their attention or an appropriate place to do so.
  6. I have also heard before that you can't legally hail a cab in Cleveland...here's what I found in the city's code of ordinances for pedestrians: § 471.061 To Repeatedly Stop, Hail Down, or Beckon to Vehicles Prohibited; Exceptions; Penalties (a) No person shall repeatedly stop, beckon to, or attempt to stop vehicles by hailing, waving arms, or making other bodily gestures, in or about any public place, or any place open to the public, or any private place visible from a public place, in combination with the following conduct: To repeatedly leave the place in a vehicle that the person has stopped, hailed down or beckoned to, and to return a short time later, in less than an hour, to the same or another public place, or any place open to the public, or any private place visible from a public place, to repeat the same behaviors. (b) No person shall repeatedly stop, beckon to, or attempt to stop vehicles by hailing, waving arms, or making other bodily gestures, by waving arms, or making other bodily gestures, in or about any public place, or any place open to the public, or any private place visible from a public place, in combination with the following conduct: (1) To transfer small objects or packages in exchange for currency or any other thing of value; or (2) To carry small objects or packages in the mouth and to transfer such objects or packages to another person for currency or any other thing of value, or to swallow or attempt to swallow the objects or packages if approached by a law enforcement officer. © This section does not apply to any person who stops, beckons to, or attempts to stop vehicles due to emergency, or to warn drivers of danger, or to engage transportation for hire. (d) The requisite culpability or intent for the offenses defined in this section is knowingly. As used in this section, “knowingly” has the same meaning as in Section 601.07. (e) Whoever violates divisions (a) or (b) of this section is guilty of a misdemeanor of the fourth degree on the first offense, and a misdemeanor of the first degree on each subsequent offense. Ord. No. 1217-02. Passed 6-10-02; eff. 6-14-02) and for taxicabs: § 443.29 Cruising or Soliciting No public hack, while soliciting employment, shall stand on any public street or place other than at or upon a public hack stand, designated or established in accordance with this chapter; nor shall any driver of such hack seek employment by repeatedly and persistently driving his or her hack to and fro in a short space before, or by otherwise interfering with the proper and orderly access to or egress from any theater, hall, hotel, public resort, railway or boat landings, or other place of public gatherings. No person shall solicit passengers for public hacks, except the driver of a public hack, when sitting upon the driver’s seat of such vehicle, except that at special points designated by the Commissioner of Assessments and Licenses not more than two (2) agents may be employed to solicit business on the street. No persons shall be permitted to ride in the front seat of a taxicab with the driver, unless the rear compartment is occupied, and any driver who shall permit this may be deprived of his or her license. All police officers and inspectors of licenses shall notify the Commissioner of any violation of this provision. (Ord. No. 1684-76. Passed 6-29-76, eff. 7-6-76) § 443.30 Loitering Near Public Hack Prohibited No person shall loiter within a distance nearer than twenty (20) feet of any public hack occupying space on a public hack stand. The driver of any public hack shall remain on the driver’s seat, or inside of his or her hack at all times when such hack is standing upon the public stands or when actually engaged in carrying passengers, provided that nothing in this section shall be held to prohibit such driver from alighting to the street for the purpose of assisting passengers into or out of such vehicle, or take care of the calls of nature while upon a public stand, limiting his or her absence from such stand to fifteen (15) minutes, during which time his or her hack shall occupy a position at the rear end of such stand. (Ord. No. 1684-76. Passed 6-29-76, eff. 7-6-76)
  7. Public Square has not always been four separate quadrants. Here's some PS history and also information about the Fence "War"
  8. Wow that's actually a terrifying stat. What would it take to get that changed? Adopting a form based zoning code.
  9. CSU still has that in some spots. There's one right next to the 17th St garage. I think they require permits now though.
  10. Unexpected brain gain boosts Cleveland toward new economy, study finds By Robert L. Smith, The Plain Dealer CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Old industries, aging workers and empty neighborhoods paint a portrait of a Cleveland in steady decline. But a new population study signals that image may be as outdated as a Cuyahoga River fire. While civic leaders worried about brain drain, young professionals from elsewhere were streaming into urban neighborhoods, raising education and income levels and maybe setting the stage for a new economy, researchers say. According to a report from the Center for Population Dynamics at Cleveland State University, the tide has turned toward brain gain, an influx of well-educated people. Cleveland's new challenge is to stoke a new population pattern unfolding at an opportune time. [Read More]

Tedders, I love it here! Both Ohio City and Gordon Square are fantastic neighborhoods and I couldn't rank one over the other. It all really depends on what is out there and what you are looking for. It seems like the synergy of both areas is spreading out. If you want more information, feel free to PM me.
  12. I think that both the Sanctuary/Serenity and Brickhaus plans are great and either one would be a winner, but that City Architecture/Lake Ave. proposal just looked awful. It totally disregards the church and that design is so blah.
  13. I believe that is has been mentioned on this site before, but there are federal regulations in place that have led to a longer construction time frame for this project. There are certain materials that cannot be used, restrictions on certain construction techniques, and even restrictions on where certain materials and equipment can be stored. And I agree with Hts121, there are more aspects to this project that aren't easily observable.
  14. Biker, how would the streetcar on Lorain work with the proposed bike lanes? Or could a streetcar still run down Lorain if the bike lanes are built?

But are suburbanites the audience that we are trying to attract here? Certainly they are ONE demographic, but I feel like even suburbanites are now a little more savvy to what Cleveland has to offer. I was under the impression that Positively Cleveland was meant to market the city to those out of the region and outside of the state. How does this marketing campaign do any good for the city? Their comment about the hamburger makes it seem like we have no interesting food scene. And the parking, great...it's basically an ad for Applebee's. Why would anyone be persuaded to come here if they can just go to a chain restaurant in Anywhere USA and get the same thing? At least the Downtown Cleveland marketing campaign says/shows what Cleveland really is, an exciting place with an abundance of amenities, an engaged population, and a growing atmosphere of excitement.
  16. Was walking around the neighborhood yesterday and got some shots of a couple projects... Not sure what this is: Mariner's Watch:
  17. The Medical Center Company (MCCo), a non-profit that conserves and consolidates energy distribution to other non-profits in University Circle, is behind the solar farm. MCCo was open to alternative uses on the site that incorporated their solar farm, but I don't believe there were any other willing partners.
  18. KJP - So is the request for funds just for the pedestrian bridge and a parking garage or is there actually going to be a transit aspect (Amtrak, RTA, Greyhound) to it? From the article it seems its the former.
  19. ^UrbanOhio is the authority on world class signage.

^I was one of the ones who choose other. My car was given to me, so I wasn't sure if I'd really be considered an "owner."
  21. And the PD has confirmed what The Scene already printed (as well as gave a better summation of Dr. Franklin's time with the National Gallery of Canada). Cleveland Museum of Art confirms that an extramarital affair led to David Franklin's resignation as director By Steven Litt, The Plain Dealer on October 24, 2013 at 10:58 AM, updated October 24, 2013 at 11:02 AM The chairman of the Cleveland Museum of Art confirmed Wednesday that an extramarital affair with a museum employee, who committed suicide in April, led to David Franklin’s resignation on Monday as the institution’s director. Cleveland lawyer R. Steven Kestner, the museum board chairman, said on Monday that Franklin resigned for “personal reasons.” On Wednesday, Kestner said that the museum became aware in early October of a Cleveland Heights police report stating that Franklin called the police just after midnight on Sunday, April 29 to report the suicide by hanging of a then-former museum employee with whom he was later widely rumored to be having an affair. 22. ^Not sure Geis could get it done much faster. As you pointed out, this is a federal project involving a federal building. Because of that, there are a lot of construction guidelines that must be followed for safety reasons (post-9/11 rules, blast zone, etc.).' Edit: On top of that, this building is still occupied, so that needs to be considered as well.
  23. RTA has no intention of expanding the rail system. RTA execs have told their planners not to recommend rail in their alternatives analyses. And one RTA planner actually kicked a colleague in the leg when he said he would support a streetcar project. Don't get mad at me for disclosing these actions, RTA. I'm sure you can defend them. Otherwise, why else would you do them? So the only reason why RTA does an alternatives analysis is because its wants federal funds to expand BRT. If you want to see the rail system in your city expand, you need to move to a new city. I've already started sending out resumes to other cities. I've heard a lot of horrible things about RTA from RTA staff (low level, not higher ups), and this lack of vision is one of them. Pretty much all stems from an old guard control over the agency that has a very outdated view of the world and is too afraid of change.
  24. It definitely was cleaning. When on my way home last night, there were workers power washing.

Thanks guys! Although I like Lakewood, I'm glad that I'll be moving to one of my favorite sections of the city. And being closer to downtown will be nice. Believeland and KJP - I've been meaning to get a bike for some time now, hopefully now I'll be more motivated now to get one. I figure having one will make it much easier getting to the redline or for just commuting to school and work.
