Wilmington, North Carolina
My experience of Raleigh and the surrounding suburbs mirrors that as well. My brother in law and his family( NE Ohio transplants) live near Cary and let me just say every time I'm there I drive by a new large section of forested area that has been decimated for some sort of exurban subdivision. They rave and rave about the area but in all honesty I have not been impressed.

Columbus: Random Photos
If you're referencing the pic I posted, it was at the franklin park conservatory last year. Haven't been back so not sure if it's still there or not. I guess at night it looks really nice. The picture was of part of British artist Bruce Munro's Light exhibit that ran from September to March at the conservatory. I visited the exhibit several times and enjoyed it quite a bit.It really is designed to be best enjoyed at night and worked really well with the different botanical gardens. Here's a link to artist's page if interested http://www.brucemunro.co.uk/exhibitions/bruce-munro-franklin-park-conservatory/

"LeBron James left Ohio. So does everyone else."
Brian Windhorst was a complete idiot when Lebron announced he was coming back as well. Numerous comments were made from him regarding that Northeast Ohio is dying and that lebron is the only hope they have.

Columbus Blue Jackets Discussion
I was at the game yesterday and man was it loud. I kept thinking to myself, this is how it can be when the blue jackets are consistently winners.

MLS: General News & Discussion
Cleveland/NE Ohio really blew their chance when Wolstein was guaranteed a franchise and couldn't get the deal done for one reason or another. It's unfortunate as a crew fan because I would like there to be another team in the vicinity but I'm pretty sure the MLS higher ups got a bad taste in their mouth from the inaction that occurred. As a result the league got something called chivas which turned out to be a huge bust and Cleveland's own drew carey is a partial owner of the seattle sounders. As far as the crew go, I am optimistic that they will have a good season. They went undefeated in the preseason ,which doesn't count for much but hopefully may be a sign of things to come. As someone who drives up I-71 to browns game, I can attest that the drive to columbus from cleveland for crew games is not bad. In fact my father-in-law who lives in cleveland went from being a huge soccer snob who would only support his EPL team and shivered at the thought of supporting a MLS team from Columbus to a Crew season ticket holder who drives down for every home match and loves it. It only took a couple of games that I prodded him to go with me for him to see the light.

Hamilton Revisited
yes. the findlay neighborhoods are very scattershot and more on a par with the other cities neighborhoods. that is to say, mostly junky or typical newer stuff and no or very little real historic neighborhood stock like hamilton has. Although I agree that hamilton seems to have excellent housing stock and neighborhoods, I disagree that findlay doesn't at least have excellent historic neighborhood stock near their southern part of main street with an abundance of large Victorian homes.

Crime alert: Credit card skimmers at gas pumps
According to the article, the information can be accessed wirelessly so it seems the criminals could leave it there for as long as they wanted. I would guess the people behind this probably assumed this would be found at some point in time and have no intention of coming back to retrieve the device.

Anytime I hear kahoots I think of a guy I used to work with, who was a surfer dude type character. Every friday before we'd leave he'd corner me and say" Hey brah, wanna go to kahooots?" I never did. Lots of family emergencies. :)

MAC: General Conference News & Discussion
One thing to point out is that Kent st and maybe northern illinois have a legitimate shot at a bcs game. If any of the non automatic qualifying conferences have a team that is in the top 16 and are ranked higher then any of the qualifying conference champions, then that team goes to a bcs game.Currently no big east school is in the top 25. Kent st is currently at 17 in the bcs and beating 21 northern illinois would be huge. UCLA at 16 would be the most likely to lose still although if nebraska or florida st lost it would be conceivable for them to move lower then 16. Orange bowl reps are going to the mac title game so it would be of benefit for both teams to bring lots of fans.

Columbus: OSU / University Area Developments and News
BUCKEYE54 replied to CMH_Downtown's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & Constructionyeah it really is horrible. I hope either the rendering is way off or there's still plenty of room for discussion. I mean for 30 million dollars the stroh center in BG seems much more appealing.

Salt Lake City, UT + Ogden, UT
Well, I believe in salt lake's case it took hosting an olympic games to get the funds for rail. Not that I'm jealous as a columbus resident or anything.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
I think it comes down to a few things. All of which suck. 1)shurmur and his staff were late several times getting play calls in to weeden along with the proper personal on 3rd down. Weedens" No comment" when asked about the issues in postgame interviews as well as shurmur basically saying the coaching staff screwed up puts the blame solely on the the staffs shoulders. 2)The browns have been notoriously bad running for third down conversions this season. Who's at fault? Well you could say alot of people but I put the blame on the o-line. The o- line doesn't seem to have the capability to blow people off the line especially on the 3rd downs and for that matter doesn't seem to have the capability to consistently pick up the pass rush in the red zone or 3rd downs for more then 1-1.5 seconds. 3) Receivers didn't seem to have a whole lot of separation on the 3rd down especially. The browns still don't have a number one go to NFL reciever and cooper who has recently seemed to be weedens safety valve on those type of plays was out. 4)Weeden is a rookie qb who does not want to risk a mistake in those situations. Even if he did see a small area to fit the ball in 10 yds down field he opted to go through his progressions which always went, "Covered,Covered,Covered, fourth option which happens to be a 3 yd out. 5)Poor play calling. Taking all of those things into consideration, the plays took way too long to set up and progress. There really shouldn't be any situation that the 4th option is only 2 yds down field if you need 5. The options for weeden to take a quck step and fire on a slant route like the called back td where few and far between from my vantage point.

Columbus: Local Media News & Discussion
I'm kinda surprised in an article about a radio station, not one mention of the music format. I used to love CD101 when I lived in Columbus, but then somewhere along the way they just stopped playing new music. I didn't want to listen to the Verve Pipe and Blur forever. Yeah I know what you mean. I find myself listening more and more to 106.7 and even 99.7. I want to support local radio but it seems like they aren't playing the new stuff or when they do its pretty obscure bands. I like hearing obscure bands but not when they suck and are being played to get some hipster indie street cred or something. :-)

Cleveland Browns Discussion
Once again, if people are saying those quotes when the football team plays bad, they are complete losers. I am a huge sports fan, but have never nor will ever live here because of the sports teams. If you live here because of the cleveland browns, probably time to take a look in the mirror and check your own life out. I agree completely. In recent years especially, it has become nonstop negativity during the whole game by certain people. Its almost the cool thing to do or something. The final straw for me occurred a couple of years ago when someone said they wished the browns had never come back and I sort of snapped and told the person what I thought of their comment. Either way the bills fans in front of me yesterday were really really enjoying the browns fans self pity which made the game even worse.

Cleveland Browns Discussion
As bad as the browns game was for me yesterday, what was even more annoying was the tons of bills fans that were at the game who took great pleasure in pointing out how much louder they were then the browns fans. Also its always such a joy to have to hear the constant self pity and bullshit from people in the stadium even when things are going well during the game. Quotes heard during the game from browns fans "Clevelands so depressing. I told you we should move!" "Buffalo's the only city shittier then cleveland" "I'm going to start rooting for the steelers. At least I'll be rooting for a winner" etc. etc. I go to about 5 games a year and hear the exact same thing win or lose from people in the stadium. People talk about the good old days when we won. Guess what we also had, home field advantage. Something I don't think we've had in quite awhile. I understand we suck and there's a lot of room for improvement but the constant nonstop negativity during the games is so draining and over the top that it makes me want to stay home and watch on tv. I mean did anyone really expect weeden or richardson to be all pros by week 3? No phil taylor or joe haden and one of the youngest teams in the nfl. This is about what I expected this year. Its bad enough that the browns lose but this non stop self pity and ripping on the city you supposedly"love" is disgusting.

Columbus Crew Discussion
Right now there is a definite divide in the Eastern Conference. NY and KC are the real class and Houston (who may have the easiest run in of the top 6 teams, they should go 5-0)is right there with them, despite Chicago's recent form I don't think they can keep it up. Those Three should make it into the playoffs easily. The next three, Chicago, DC, and C-bus all have a real shot but I think it is going to be DC and the Crew who make it. All of this though depends on the Crew winning their cupcake games (Chivas, Philly, and Toronto) and beating Chicago on Saturday. If they lose on Saturday you can almost throw away any hope of making the playoffs. There is actually a little round robin between Columbus, Chicago, and DC. Columbus v. Chicago is Saturday, Columbus v. DC is Oct. 20th, Chicago v. DC is Oct. 27 the penultimate weekend and could be a play in game before the playoffs. Yeah you're exactly right. Things could potentially work even if the crew lost at chicago although it would take chicago getting upset by some teams and the crew winning their games which I don't feel comfortable with at all. I actually think the crew can get a point against KC at home on October 7. KC doesn't scare me nearly as much as NY does for whatever reason. If you're a crew fan you also need to become a really big philadelphia union fan as well considering they still play every team that is ahead of the crew. The key really is the health of higuain as well as consistent defensive play. If you watched the most recent games, the d will play well for stretches and then completely disappear or make horrible mistakes like failing to clear the ball or losing track of thierry henry. I hate to say it but chad marshall has not looked good at all in stretches recently and julius james seems to be more concerned with jawing with the opposition then playing any meaningful defense.I really wish carlos mendes would get healthy.

Columbus Crew Discussion
Fortunately with 6 games left, 3 of the games are against opponents ahead of them which mean the crew have some control over their destiny. The other 3 games are against the 2 bottom teams in the east and the bottom team in the west.Which hopefully the crew should win although nothing can be taken for granted.

Fostoria and a patch of grass in Tiffin
Hopefully it's a Culver's. They opened in Findlay, right? This is really sad to see. Ohio is losing way too many historic landmarks. I'm sure Tiffin is still a beautiful town, but losing such a centralized and important building did a lot of damage to the downtown. Fostoria looks like it's in worse shape than it was when I was a kid. I'd frequently visit Fostoria and Fremont (the two small "F" cities near Toledo), and while they always were a bit gritty, it looks like there is a lot more abandonment now. I hate what's happening to the small cities in Ohio. It's like if they're not college towns, they're screwed. Culvers did open in findlay's westside right off of 75. Friends of mine who live in findlay have told me that hancock county/Findlay seems to be attracting alot of fostoria residents and businesses. Growing up in the area, fostoria had a reputation for being rougher compared to findlay or the other surrounding communities (more problems with gangs, drugs, etc.). That reputation, whether its fair or not, has definitely been a detriment to the growth of the city in my opinion.

Columbus: OSU Medical Center Expansion
BUCKEYE54 replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionThere's been several times in recent weeks where I catch myself being surprised by the outline of the tower lit up with all of the construction lighting at night. I was visiting friends in hilliard and there's definitely some good views of it there which caught me off guard. Although I guess alcohol could also have been involved as well. :)

Relocating to Canton
Hi everyone, My friend just accepted a job at Walsh University and will be moving to Canton with her husband from Arizona. She's already been to Canton once to attempt to find a house/ apartment to rent and hasn't really had any luck. They would like to stick to a max of about 1000 a month and would prefer renting a house although an apartment is ok. A top priority is safety and a decent commute. Does anyone have thoughts on what might be a good area to look or have any experience on this matter? I live in columbus so I'm not that familiar with the neighborhoods of canton.Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Ways Ohio can become a high growth state.
Yes, you are implying if people knew more about Cedar Point then more people would move to Ohio. Or I guess Michigan or Indiana since you have to drive a bit from any population center in Ohio to get to Cedar Point. I think it's a bit laughable. Sure it's fun, but it's an amusement park (albeit a great one) and there are amusement parks all over the place. So a revised statement is advertise what we have - Like what? What differentiates us from all the other places people can go? Not much when it comes down to it. I love Ohio as much or more than most people, but it's absolutely true that if you weren't born and raised in Ohio, you don't view it with the fondness we do. We tend to see what we love, not what everyone else sees - which is just run of the mill places. Sure, a lot of work has been done in the cities and there's great revitalization, but don't kid yourself thinking that if people just knew more then they would want to be here. Maybe you don't know what all these other places have to offer if you think that. And if replies to this come in and point out things you like, think about if that can be found in a number of other places as well... more than likely it can. Although I understand that other states have attractions as well I disagree that all of Ohio's attractions are just run of the mill.Ohio's attractions suffer from run of the mill advertising by far. Cedar Point has been voted the best amusement park for roller coasters in the world . It's hardly comparable to anything surrounding states have. Ohio is bordered by a great lake with islands and the ohio river. It has the largest amish community in the world. It has the rock and roll hof,the pro football hof, national museum of the united states air force, national underground railroad museum, national inventors hof, national first ladies museum and many others, the top rated science center in the US, 3 of the top 10 zoos, a national park, one of top symphonies in the world, the largest Oktoberfest in the US, and everything else that goes along with having 3 metros of close to 2 million or more and several other middle size metro areas. This is all off the top of my head so I understand that I'm missing some things but I feel a large amount of states can't compete with the sheer amount of attractions ohio has but a major issue is that people in ohio aren't really even familiar with what is going on in their own state. I'm not saying that better advertising will lead to bigger growth for the state but I do feel that the perception of the state need to be changed and tourism is one major way to do so.

Columbus: Festivals, Music Concerts, & Events
I would be willing to suspect that holding the festivities that include 500,000 -750,000 people downtown on the weekend closest to the 4th has much more to do with logistics then the inconvenience it would cause to suburbanites. I also wonder how exactly you could discern whether or not the attendees are suburbanites or city residents considering the city of Columbus has over 790,000 residents and the suburbs have about 1 million. Or is the term suburbanite in reference to anyone who doesn't live in downtown proper? I live in German Village and am perfectly fine with the timeframe that the festivities occur in.
