  1. By the way, that's a rockin' cool document...lots of history in it - some of it I'd heard before, but a good bit of it is new. Great find!
  2. Very nice...this is a gem of an area architecturally (no thanks to Desales Plaza, of course - ick ick ick). It would be great to see it redevelop.
  3. I'd disagree with that - well, it does seem political and all that, but to my mind, Council should assess the plan on its merits, regardless of whether they feel slighted or not. I'd rather not see them hold the riverfront hostage just to make a point.
  4. The best thing about them was in the winter when Calhoun's fire alarm would go off in the middle of the night - Arby's and maybe the Taco Bell would be packed, but they were at least warm. You'd wonder if an unscrupulous owner wasn't behind some of those alarms...
  5. Holy crap, is there a huge crane up there today! I didn't have my camera with me (I'm a fool), but it's this odd one, where it makes a triangle in the air. The main vehicle part is on Adams Crossing behind the firehouse - they have the road closed off. It's actually sitting right on this road where this picture was taken: I'll try to get pictures in the morning if I can, but I have an early meeting and might have to get them on the way home.

^That's great - I'm a sucker for river shots. I went out today to a few parks, but didn't venture this far west - just Eden and Alms, then back along Eastern Avenue through town up to Prima Vista and its environs...definitely have to go check this place out in person, though.
  7. Do I win the award for "Shot of the QCS Crane From The Furthest Distance"? This is from the St. Rose Church parking lot - I figure it's a bit over 3 miles away...
  8. While it's good that you're concerned about your communities, but this may be taking it a touch too far... Well, the long hot summer has begun, I guess. I know it's too much to hope that the killings stop, but at least we can hope no more 14-year-old kids get hit by stray bullets while riding their bikes...

Here's the USGS Site Map for Cincinnati. It says, "Gage datum 428.88 feet above sea level", which is right in downtown (I believe at the Roebling). I assume that means the river bed, from which the height is measured, which would mean pool stage is about 455' above sea level, and downtown's flood stage of 52' is at 481' above sea level. Looking at topo's of downtown, that sounds about right. There's going to be some drop between downtown and Sayler Park, which is 15 miles downstream, but probably no more than a few feet. The river drops at 7"/mile between Pittsburgh and Cincinnati, and at 3.4"/mile between Cincinnati and Cairo, but much of that drop occurs at dams. How much, I have no idea, but if half the drop is at dams, that would mean only about three feet of difference between the Roebling Bridge and Fernbank Park. Anyway, this means that January's flood, at 57 feet, would have hit between 480' and 485' at Fernbank. Given your elevation info of "the park ranges from 470' above sea level or so around its ends and about 480'-485' near the middle", I guess the answer is yes, it will probably see some water on occasion.
  10. Looks like semi trailers on blocks to me, but I do agree that it's interesting! I wonder if they'll have class when the river gets high enough to make them islands - tell me that wouldn't be cool!

Wow - that looks like a great suburban park. 12 miles of paved trails, all that river frontage - very nice. Any idea how high the river could rise and still not flood it? If this was taken within the last few weeks, the river would have been at 26/27 feet for these pictures.
  12. Definitely, thanks for the update! Oh, the "Riverview East Academy photos" link is busted...speaking of which, that one may be the ugliest of these new schools, though none are all that impressive looking. But I guess we're paying for space to educate kids, not for architectural wonders...

Man, wouldn't it be amazing if it were permanently changed to a pedestrian mall? That's probably very impractical, but what an attraction it would be!
  14. Cool...thank you for the update (and all your other 'round town updates of late!)
  15. My birthday was yesterday, and my lovely wife got me a Konica Minolta Maxxum 70 35mm SLR Camera with 28-100mm Lens. I've never had a real film camera, and know very little about it - I'm planning to buy film tonight and play with it tomorrow in and around Eden Park. Anyone familiar with this camera, or any general advice on running a film camera?
  16. Can you include the URL with the articles? It's handy sometimes for emailing folks and finding related stories and such...but thanks for updating us with them!
  17. Holy fucking shit...I'm fucking flabbergasted.
  18. Ah, I see - I hadn't realized it was two ends of the same city block - I always approached that block from two different sides (I used to play organ around a couple places in Northside and would tool around after the services). I recognize the connection now - thank you thank you!
  19. I'm a little confused...the location we've been talking about is on Hamilton at Blue Rock...the location this article starts talking about is over off Spring Grove (btw, way cool on converting the factory to residential - that's a scary looking place right now, but a really convenient location). So was the Spring Grove proposal just another option to be considered? It seemed like the rest of the article talked about the Hamilton/Blue Rock location...I'm perplexed...
  20. ^They've got a few fantastic phrases...my favorite is "purtnere", which is a contraction of "pretty near" and translates as "almost" - "he stuck his hand in the tractor and it purtnere got tore off!"
  21. Ya' know it! My grandparents, born and raised and still living in Norwalk, Ohio (not far from Sandusky) for 80+ years, both say "warsh". I grind my teeth at it from everyone but them - it just fits on them! I definitely say that - in fact, I'm sure my boss would say I say that far too often!
  22. What's odd about "let's go smoke"?
  23. Besides which, how much traffic does that strip of Ghent throughput in a day? That road was busy when I used to frequent Summit Mall, and that was 15 years ago...I can only imagine now...35-75 cars parked there between 7am and 7pm will be an utterly unnoticeable drop in the bucket.
  24. Yeah, it's hard to take concerns regarding the environmental impacts very seriously when you're talking about public freakin' transportation...like, is the alternative really that much better for the environment?
  25. Canon Powershot A60 - 2MP with 3x optical zoom: http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=ModelDetailAct&fcategoryid=145&modelid=8774 Not a great machine, but then I don't have much talent either - I'm mostly a point-and-clicker, with a few flights of artsyness, and it does the job for me.
