Since you don't get to be a saint until after you die, are beatified and canonized, there are probably more bengals in the jungles than there are saints!

Cincinnati: East End / Linwood / California: Development and News
RiverViewer replied to The_Cincinnati_Kid's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionHere's the area The Cincinnati Kid's asking about - TMB Park is to the upper right, between the river and Eastern Avenue, and the fresh grading is in the center of the shot: BTW, the river's rather high right now - 45.7 feet - flood stage is 52 feet, low water is around 26 feet, and January's flood peaked just shy of 57 feet...

I've never heard it referred to as "the Jungle" before...do I just need to get out more, or is that a fairly new locution?

Columbus: Brewery District Developments and News
RiverViewer replied to seanguy's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionFrom this thread where rob_1412 posted a map of Cincinnati from 1900, I see that Front Street became Mehring Way for a short portion to the west, and the the rest of its route is covered by the stadiums, as you said, and ends at Sycamore, assuming Sycamore still dropped down all the way to Public Landing instead of stopping at East 3rd... On the whole a bad spot for a Kroger.

RiverViewer replied to seanguy's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionDid it become a numbered street, or get subsumed by FWW et al?

Columbus: Brewery District Developments and News
RiverViewer replied to seanguy's post in a topic in Central & Southeast Ohio Projects & ConstructionYeah, I first read it as Cincinnati for some reason - then Sycamore seemed to confirm it, but I didn't remember any "Front Street" downtown...I looked at a map, couldn't find a Front Street anywhere in the city...then I finally went back to the article...

Columbus: Interstate 270/OH 161 NeXT Project
My in-laws are probably going to move into the Craughwell apartments on Avery-Murfield - we checked them out a couple weekends ago (they want to be out in the 'burbs) - that strip mall is definitely the nicest I've seen, and with the apartment complex butting up against the Giant Eagle side, it actually makes for a pretty walkable environment. Here's some pictures:

Metro Cincinnati: Road & Highway News
I've driven that intersection a ton of times, but always on a weekend - I used to play organ at Northside United Methodist on Chase, so I'd drive it on a Sunday mid-morning...how backed up does it get on a weekday? Is it really nasty?

Cincinnati: John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge
^Really? Different folks, different strokes...I guess there's a beauty in the simple, arching roadway, but I definitely prefer my bridges more "bridgey"...

Peak Oil
No doubt, we're going to run out of oil - just like England largely ran out of lumber and firewood in the 17th and 18th centuries, with the difference being forests can be replaced in a generation or two. The question is how we're able to handle the transformation of our economy. I'm all in favor of conservation, though suspicious of mandating it via legislation. CAFE standards do seem to be an effective tool, but rising prices are going to be the best driver of conservation. If prices rise slowly enough to avoid a major shock, but fast enough to encourage research and development of alternative energy sources, then it will be just another transformation, like we've undergone many times before. If not, we may have some nasty shocks in store. Personally, I believe we'll be able to develop alternatives, especially when there's money to be made in doing so. And with a global network of oil drilling, and a horizon of oil drilling that's measured in decades, and ever-mounting price pressures, I think we'll probably end up transforming the economy in fairly good order.

I'd go with the UK Blue or the Ballpark Mustard myself...of course, that's probably why my wife picks out the colors for our walls...

Cincinnati: John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge
Here's the eastern bridges hydrobond mentioned - this is from last fall just after sunrise, from the Celestial's parking lot in Mt. Adams (left to right - Daniel Carter Beard Bridge (471/Big Mac), L&N Railroad Bridge (Purple People Bridge), and the Taylor-Southgate): I'd love to see the Taylor-Southgate painted something - it's just so non-spectacular now - just a low road that flies out over the water...something striking, like a deep red...ooo...I guess the dark colors are avoided because they really show off the bird droppings, but it would be awfully cool looking...

Ohio Department Stores
Ah, it must have been Summit Mall - and then it became the May Company, and then Kaufman's, right? I'll have to ask mom about O'Neill's...I definitely remember it going from May Company to Kaufman's... Thanks to both of you! This was driving me nuts...

Ohio Department Stores
Any idea where the "suburban Akron" stores were? I tried a little googling but didn't find much, and I know we didn't go to downtown Akron (my family lived in Brook Park and then Hinckley)...

Ohio Department Stores
Where were the O'Neill's stores? That names been nagging at me for a couple days now, but I can't remember if it's because mom used to talk about going there, or if it's something else...
