  1. Wow...that's a lot of money for a place that's missing some pretty basic features. My wife and I rented a huge place (two floors, 1.5 baths, 1400 sf, two porches) in a beautiful house (pre-1900's with four beautiful tile fireplaces and hardwood floors and tons of woodwork, etc.) right on Ludlow in the gaslight for less money than that. But you aren't across the street from school in the gaslight - it's more like a 20 minute walk. Hell, there's gotta be lots of places a few minutes from campus that are far less than that. How many bedrooms do you get for $1300/month?
  2. I wouldn't be opposed to that...I love having a skyline for the campus, so I'd love to see a 13 story (14 story?) building replace it, but man, Calhoun and Siddall have always struck me as excessively ugly structures.
  3. Some shots from about a half hour ago:
  4. ...except for the difference in salinity, they're pretty indistinguishable...
  5. Picture from last week, heading south on Ashland just north of Victory Parkway...
  6. Oh yeah, it's great. I wish they'd let Inn The Wood survive, but regardless, this will be a fantastic development for the campus and the neighborhood...
  7. Very exciting...great news for the school and the city...
  8. Definitely - thanks for the pictures! I'll admit, I've always had a very low opinion of Youngstown, based on nothing but bad mouthing from folks I knew. Seeing pictures on other threads, and these shots of major construction, definitely shows me my myopic view was...er...myopic...
  9. Renters most certainly add a lot to a neighborhood...there's a turnover, fresh blood, and a vibrancy that you just don't get with 20 year residents. Rental rates are already astronomical in Hyde Park, and every unit removed just lowers supply...all rentals sucks - but a nice mix makes a nice neighborhood.
  10. Indeed...I agree, the perception is nuts - I lived there for two years, never had a problem with crime, loved the area...I'm guess I'm just too hyper-anal at times!
  11. I just checked a few numbers to compare crime in Clifton to crime in Anderson Township: Anderson Pop: 43,857 Offenses: 1,351 Property: 1,013 Violent: 338 Clifton Pop: 8,546 Offenses: 1,194 Property: 955 Violent: 239 So Anderson has 31 crimes per 1,000 residents, Clifton has 140...Clifton has 5 times the property crimes per capita as Anderson has, and 3.6 times the violent crimes. A couple caveats - I just did the property/violent split myself, and might not reflect official designations. Burglary I counted as property, robbery as violent, that sort of thing. A more germane caveat - I'm sure a lot of the crimes reported in Clifton victimized non-residents, and I would bet the non-resident to resident victim proportion in Clifton is far higher than that in Anderson. That would bring the effective "population" of Clifton up and even out these numbers. But I have no way of beginning to guess at how big this effect is. Is the pool of Cliftonites doubled? Tripled? I have no way of knowing... Regardless, I do think it's safe to say that Anderson is significantly safer than Clifton. And that being said, I agree 100% with Mr. Coffee: Links: Anderson Crimes Anderson Population Clifton Crimes Clifton Population
  12. Well, there is a lot of property crime in Clifton. I don't know the per capita numbers between Clifton and Anderson, but I'm sure Clifton's worse..but I don't see where the line, "it's a lot nicer here" comes from...I can think of very few measures of "nice" that would make that statement true...
  13. ^That's great news...hope it works out well for you and the other residents...
  14. Isn't there a gas station on the NW corner of Liberty and Sycamore there? Or is that set back onto Liberty?

It's supposed to be 64 degrees, no rain...I envy you the chance to run around our fair city!
  16. Well, the Paddock Road project was begun long before that bill was passed. However, I still have to think it's pretty short-sighted not to allow for the possibility of future widening. The chances that it would eventually expand beyond its current six total lanes has got to be high enough to warrant accounting for the possibility. Anyone know how much more it would have cost to build it to accommodate the extra lanes? If the idea was considered and rejected, for instance for the reasons that Jake cites, I may disagree with the reasoning. But if the thought was never considered, which is how the newscast reads to me - that's inexcusable negligence.
  17. Holy ass...that's astonishing...I'm nearly speechless...

A-f'ing-men...these almost-warm-enough weekends are killing me...can't wait for warm weather...
  19. I've never been to the ballet, though I've always meant to. But that new construction should be very eye-catching. The current location looks dumpy and unappealing - definitely not the vibe a ballet should have: You'll have to be able to see this from the bridge over Central at Music Hall, no? Which would mean probably 80% of the folks who go to orchestra concerts and operas and whatever else at Music Hall will be reminded of the ballet after every show...that's really exciting...

Pleasant Ridge is a fantastic area...of all the neighborhoods outside of walking distance to downtown, I think the only two I'd seriously consider would be Pleasant Ridge and the gaslight area of Clifton. The hills make an area beautiful, and the central business district makes it interesting...plus you've got the Ridge Market and a UDF...I'd imaging those together aren't sufficient for all your grocery needs, but it would take care of a lot of them...
  21. Is this the appropriate time for a Beavis and Butthead line? Very nice...I'm curious about how this level of development and re-development compares with other times - is OTR on a small upswing, a major upswing, or is this just the regular background level of development we'd see at any time?
  22. I agree - there's already an open-air concert venue with P&G Pavilion, lots of walking available from the Banks all the way out thru Sawyer Point et al to Friendship park and its paths...it will be fantastic to have a park right in the heart of downtown right along the river, but happily it doesn't have to be everything all in one spot.
  23. Speak loudly and carry a tiny stick...
  24. How does one go about building an underground garage on the riverfront? I mean, as we've seen, it does flood down there...do you build it to take flood water and then pump it out and clean up, or do you try to defend it against an 80 footer?
  25. I definitely looked at the thread, looked at each property, just didn't have anything worthwhile to add...probably should have thrown in a thanks - didn't think about how long that must have taken...so thank you! Very encouraging news!
