Top Ten Reasons Why I Dispise Grocery Stores
I'm guessing the reason is because, from what I understand, gas stations hardly make any money on gasoline - like, pennies a gallon, if that. They survive on selling snacks and smokes and beer. So it makes sense to drop gas prices only insofar as it drives traffic into the store for a pack of gum. Alternately, they can encourage folks to shop in their store rather than Bigg's with the promise of discounted gas, and make their money back on the groceries...

Cincinnati: Restaurant News & Info
RiverViewer replied to The_Cincinnati_Kid's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentOldest gay bar in the city, from what I understand...Issue430 could give us more history on it - I think he met some of the original waitresses a few years ago... Great place - cheap drinks, hole-in-the-wall, delightfully nice people...it's my favorite place to go and just liquor up...

Cincinnati: Clifton Heights: U Square @ the Loop
EXACTLY! And that's why, rather than coercive government power saddled by private develpment firms, we instead use the rule of law to determine things like private property rights! Ah, my friend, this is what puts us at a competitive advantage. Investors can put their money into US businesses without worrying that the government is going to nationalize their industry and simply steal factories and merchandise and facilities and contracts.

On the other hand again, if you own property, you sorta, ya know, own it, and at least according to the fifth amendment, your private property shall not be taken for public use without just compensation...and even though Kelo says an increased tax base is a public use, I don't imagine that precedent is due to last very long - though hey, I could be wrong...

Cincinnati Enquirer
Thank you for agreeing with me. Getting A's and being intellectually curious, observant and willing to act on ideas are not related. As opposed to what you said, which was that they are inversely related - you said "people who got a lot of A's in high school tend not to have strong opinions, be scrappy, be from a poor background, etc." And that's just dumb. You were right the second time - getting A's doesn't tell you anything about whether a person is scrappy has strong opinions.

Cincinnati Enquirer
I'm not arguing that journalism school is of any use, or that it produces better journalists - my guess would be just the opposite. But the assertion that "people who got a lot of A's in high school tend not to have strong opinions, be scrappy, be from a poor background, etc." is just utter nonsense.

RiverViewer replied to The_Cincinnati_Kid's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentThe article didn't mention when it'll be here, but your link has a side-bar that says: "Bodies ... The Exhibition" is scheduled to open at the Cincinnati Museum Center in late January, after "Real Pirates'' closes. Times and prices should be announced in November. 513-287-7000; www.cincymuseum.org

...quick question - which of your above comments was the sarcastic one? I'm guessing the first, but wanted to confirm with you, because it's pretty obvious you could not possibly have meant what you said in both of them!

Does Cincinnati need a commercial retail strip?
Uh, how about we leave Peeble's Corner the hell alone and let it re-develop naturally? Little by little, project after project, new residential is moving closer and closer to Peeble's Corner and its glorious buildings. A mix of incomes, with a residence-over-retail district anchored by a grocery store on one end and a hardware store on the other, with instant access to downtown, lots of transit, and surrounded by wonderful housing stock. Please, PLEASE, stay the HELL away from Peeble's Corner with your "retail strip" plans and talk of blight. Yes, there are vacant storefronts. Yes, the businesses currently there cater largely to a poor clientele, with a check-cashing place, and until recently a pawn shop and a Rent-A-Center. But year after year, a diversity of incomes is moving closer and closer. Let's give this success-story-in-the-making some time, and not cut its balls off because someone wants to build his Northgate On The Duck Creek.

CIN or NoKY: Who is winning the development race?
CiNYC - you said, "the majority of new construction on both sides of the river is pretty lackluster" - I'm curious, what is an example of non-lackluster new construction that you've seen around here? Let me tell you what I'm pursuing - I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with the lackluster appraisal, but I wonder if perhaps there's more of the non-lackluster-type stuff going on, but it's of a necessity on a smaller scale, and thus flies below the radar...if you pointed to something you think is good work, it might be that there's more of it going on than might immediately spring to mind. But I could be wrong - you might be up-to-date on all the assorted in-fill, and still find it lacking in luster...if so, that's cool, I just thought it would be worthwhile to pursue...
