Cincinnati: Downtown: Mabley Place (formerly Tower Place Mall)
Here's a general discussion thread Monte started on City West - his pictures are gone, but the discussion, including background and newspaper articles, is all still there: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?topic=1743.0 ...and here's a photo thread by OTRFan from last November: http://www.urbanohio.com/forum2/index.php?topic=11174.0

Video of Towers Collapsing
I did this type of stuff in high school. They gave us only 15 balsa wood sticks to work with to make a bridge with. Mine held up 115 lbs before it collapsed. That sure sounds like a lot of weight! Were you the winner? Any pictures of your bridge?

Cincinnati: Walnut Hills - The Overlook at Eden Park
Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a crane! Pictures from this morning: ...man, these guys must have ended up with a pretty kick-ass view in fairly short order...unfortunately, I had to go to work, couldn't keep watching...

Cincinnati: Restaurant News & Info
RiverViewer replied to The_Cincinnati_Kid's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentWell, you don't take a bite, take a drag, take a bite, take a drag...that would definitely suck...the only time one does that is when you've got a really short lunch break! But there are few things as wonderful as sitting down, putting in your drink order, then lighting up and being on your second drag when the bourbon/rocks arrives; going a round with a few appetizers, then hitting the booze and another smoke before the entree's arrive; and then a cigarette with a cup of coffee after dinner... I say this as a former smoker - I quit (for the second time) at the end of June...I'm very happy I don't smoke anymore, but man, do I miss smoking over dinner...

UC Switch to Quater System
Transferring out of UC was definitely costly for me from a credit-transfer point of view...two quarters of honors English satisfied the requirement for one year of freshman English - but to CWRU, it looked like a touch over half a semester, and I ended up having to take an entire year of freshman English over again...and a lot of one quarter electives didn't count at all, if I remember correctly...

Video of Towers Collapsing
That is hilarious, watching everyone jump back and hoot each time!

Er...the Coalition Opposed to Additional Spending and Taxes...who are trying to stop gay rights initiatives. Um, can you say "specification creep"?

Cincinnati: Random Development and News
RiverViewer replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionA typo in the Enquirer piece about the LeBlond Recreation facilities - the address should be 2335 Eastern. I was really confused when I saw 235 Eastern, because that would put it downtown, on Pete Rose Way! And around 900 through around 1700 is now Riverside Drive...this is out where Collins comes into Eastern.

Cincinnati Metro: Perfect North Slopes Ski Resort
I love the contrast of the snow-free fields with the snow-covered slopes behind them! What does it cost to spend a day tubing there, assuming one has no gear beyond a winter coat?

High School & College Fight Songs & Alma Maters
The Highland High School (Medina County) fight song is the same tune as Notre Dame's, but I don't know the words - I only know the alternate lyrics we used to sing: We are the Hornets, mighty and true We are the Hornets, who the hell are you? We can drink and we can smoke And we can indulge in dirty jokes We never quarrel, we never fight We always do our drinking at night While the loyal faculty Lie drunk on the barroom floor So pick 'em up and give 'em Beer, beer for old Highland High You bring the whisky, I'll bring the rye Send those freshmen out for gin And don't let a sober sophomore in We never stagger, we never fall We sober up on wood alcohol So f*** you all, we have a ball At goddamn Highland High!

Cincinnati Streetcar / The Connector News
Yeah, my wife and I would refer to the occasional "busterf***" when there would be three busses on Clifton, all leapfrogging each other trying to get through the lights...but with all that space to the right cleared for the on-hold Calhoun Street projects, you'd think maybe something could be worked out there for an off-street turnaround...
-
Cincinnati: Clifton Heights: U Square @ the Loop
I imagine the project will end up going forward - it'll just cost more money to acquire the property is all...
-
Cincinnati: Clifton Heights: U Square @ the Loop
Yeah, that's the one I meant...didn't remember the street name...hmm - wonder why they closed...they weren't part of the project, were they?

NFL: General News & Discussion
I would love to see the city-abandoning Colts suffer eternally - they're the bastards that set events in motion to rob Cleveland of the Browns...but logically, ain't no way the Bears will pull it out. Well, "any given Sunday" and all that, of course, but you've gotta figure it's the Colts. Which is further evidence that there is no God.

Covington, KY: The Ascent at Roebling's Bridge
Yeah, the only good thing about the Celestial is the view and the Kobe beef...

Cincinnati: Clifton Heights: U Square @ the Loop
It lost the UDF? Isn't that past where the university was taking property? I must have misunderstood what was involved...

Urban Ohio "Picture Of The Day"
Rob - your sunset is fantastic! I love the undulations in the snow! Hydrobond - how did you do that shot? I remember the windows being just little slits, no way to do something like that...it's a great shot!

Cincinnati: Arts News & Discussion
I've never had trouble parking in that garage, even when we showed up last-minute for the opera (which was generally a capacity crowd). But Xumelanie is right about showing up early if you can - you might have to park in a far corner where it will take a long, long time to get out after the show. I think the top level is probably the best for easy out on packed nights, since there's only one merge to exit, but I definitely haven't parked in all the corners of it... Parking is normally $5 there, right Xumelanie?

Cincinnati: Clifton Heights: U Square @ the Loop
We lose Inn The Woods, but keep Hardy's and Arby's...gah.

Cincinnati Bengals Discussion
Wonderful timing, to keep the stories in the news - right after Johnathan Joseph's arrest, we Chris Henry's sentencing, so we get to hear a judge grandstanding...telling him he cost us games? Excuse me, Coach Grothaus, but how about we limit our remarks to something we have a frickin' clue about? And what, you're an agent now, you know what the market will bear for an elite receiver with discipline issues? Just shut up and do your job...gah. Anyway, it sounds as though the fingers are pointing the right way now - it's not Marvin's fault, it's the players' faults - but someone chose those players in the first place...and it sounds like those decisions will factor in whether the guy is likely to spend half the season suspended or not... Brown 'fed up' with behavior BY MARK CURNUTTE | [email protected] After watching nine of his players get arrested in the past 13 months, Bengals president Mike Brown said Friday that the team would change its approach on draft day. "There may be some gifted athletes we won't pick that we might have picked a year ago," Brown told The Enquirer's Peter Bronson on Friday, a day that one of Brown's players, wide receiver Chris Henry, spent in jail in Kenton County. Kenton County Judge Douglas Grothaus sentenced Henry to two days in jail for giving alcohol to minors in a Covington hotel room last year. Cincinnati: Walnut Hills - Volterra Condominiums
Regarding the Fisher Builders construction project in Walnut Hills between St. James and Kemper Lane (see here and scroll down, then here and here)...construction has begun! Gah..."Volterra Condominiums." Trying to evoke a gambling theme or an electrical engineering theme? ...it'll be a new access road. Here's the plans - St. James to the left, Kemper to the right, north is up: Here's detail shots: This is the ColDay money shot: ...too bad they'll mostly be facing a new road (and that the new road is called "Volterra Lane") - but hey, it's new construction in Walnut Hills, spreading north of Nassau - God love Fisher for investing in my neighborhood, with what looks like a good product!
