Cincinnati: Over-the-Rhine: Development and News
RiverViewer replied to The_Cincinnati_Kid's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionBut early in the morning of April 7, 2001, Stephen Roach, a white police officer, shot and killed Timothy Thomas, an unarmed African-American, after a foot chase. A protest march two days later devolved into riots. Many Over-the-Rhine businesses were looted. Man, do I hate three-sentence summaries of the riots...

Covington, KY: Floodwall Murals, with details
I took a walk around Covington's riverfront today with Issue430, and it was the first time I'd seen the Covington Murals up close and personal...they're really phenomenal - it's well worth the time to browse along them, if for no other reason than you can keep turning around and seeing the Roebling backdropped by downtown Cincinnati! Anyway, I thought I'd post a thread of each of the murals, along with detail shots, so here you go! These are in order from east to west. All murals by Robert Dafford. 8000 BC: Great Buffalo Road: Detail of Native Americans offing one of the buffalo: Mouth of the Licking: 1782: The Meeting at the Point: The mouth of the Licking: George Rodgers Clark, Simon Kenton, Daniel Boone and Colonel Logan: Detail of a soldier, and I believe he's replacing his flint: 1805: Kennedy's Ferry and Landing: This blue heron is on the driftwood log between the two boats - probably my favorite little detail (and props to Issue430 for catching this!): 1856: Flight of the Garner Family-Underground Railroad: I dug the river ice in this one: 1862: The 1862 Pontoon Bridge across the Ohio: "Ouch, my elbow." He painted through the cracks: Jacob Price: 1867: The Roebling Suspension Bridge: "A suspension bridge across the Ohio River? Brilliant!" 1890's: Farney and Duveneck: 1921: Latonia Race Track: "German Heritage" (in progress): Covington Churches: This was my favorite mural...it looks like one large stained glass piece, made up of three windows...full picture, then details follow: 1913: Federal Ball Park: 1914: Madison Avenue, Centennial: 1922: Daniel Carter Beard: I'm sorry, the scouts in the background look like demon-children from a Japanese horror movie: Yeah, ice-sailing. Totally straight. 1937: Flood of 1937: 2008: Fireworks (in progress): Two tremendously cool things about this one: First, the kid watching: ...and second, that The Ascent is completed! Only things missing? Bootsy Collins, and blankets duct-taped to the Serpentine Wall:

COLUMBUS: Thanksgiving Twilight
This one is stunning: The bridge framing the top, the sky crystal clear, but filled with movement from the color gradations; the ripples on the river framing the bottom, with literal movement; and then the bridge, highlighted in that flame-yellow, reflected in the river...man, you've got a fantastic shot there...that's just stunning...very nicely done...

Nicely done! I'm gonna miss that YMCA building for a long time, but hopefully whatever they end up with will make me forget...

Cincinnati: Hillside Scenic Views
So Uncle Rando and I just got back from meeting with Eric Russo in the gorgeous Alms Park offices of Hillside Trust - they're in the old caretaker's building, which they've been "greening up" over the years (added a green roof, light pipes for natural lighting, an efficient boiler (since geothermal and solar are impractical in their setting), improved insulation, non-gassing paint, etc.). He showed us the pictures he's taken of the 94 views they've identified for protection - absolutely wonderful stuff. He's got a very good eye, and paid special attention to haze - he'd often go out the day after a big storm, when haze would be lowest, and often with blue skies punctuated by fluffy white clouds. And now that the leaves are mostly gone, he'll be going back again to get less-obstructed shots. The views are both those looking down from hillsides at the river/city, normally from parks, dead-end streets, or along streets; as well as views looking up from the basin and from valleys, looking up at bands of greenspace. And he found places that I'd imagine nobody but Grasscat and ColDay know about...like, I'd never heard of Ring Place before...and every time I'd think of a view and think, "oh, I'll have to tell him about that," he'd click on and it would come up. He's got a map with all the views on it, and they're developing viewshed diagrams, mapping current visibility, categorizing views to identify the highest-priority views to preserve, and hoping to have the city create a blue-ribbon panel, including experts in law and zoning and development, to recommend policies to help preserve the views - zoning policies, vegetation management, etc., etc. Eric is a really nice guy - he spent a good hour, hour and a half with us, and seems very excited about the possibilities. I'm really eager to seeing this move forward!

Is this a Cincinnati insult?
Actually, I went to both CWRU (dropped out before I failed out!) and JCU (eh...)...but I'd thought the discussion was mostly talking about public schools...maybe not...

Is this a Cincinnati insult?
...except for the floodwall murals (see here), gorgeous Shawnee State Park, a lot of cool houses and buildings (especially in the Boneyfiddle District - see here), the Ohio river coming through town, and general semi-Appalachian southern Ohio happylovelygoodness (see here and here)... (With thanks to ColDay, Pigboy, Summit Street and Mohr37 for their Portsmouth threads!)

Cincinnati: Crime & Safety Discussion
My understanding is the guy pistol-whipped the lady, then the dude in the truck was following him so he wouldn't get away, so the cops could pick him up. Perhaps that was unwise, but if I saw someone get pistol-whipped, I'd definitely try to keep him from getting away scott-free. And then the robber decided he didn't want the guy following him, and decided that shooting him dead was wise. Which is when the guy in the truck took him out. And there was an undercover cop nearby who apparently witnessed the whole thing, and corroborated the guy's story...

City West & Misc - Cincy
Every one of your threads is such a treasure...just wow. That sunset shot with P&G and the Daniel Carter Beard - that is just gorgeous! You could frame that one and sell it - I'd buy one! I too dig the weathered door, since you mentioned it - but I dig it more because of the almost shocking contrast between that beautiful old door and the super deco-looking "920" address plaque - but I guess both could be from the 1930's:

University of Cincinnati Bearcats Football Discussion
Dantonio, 50, has always preached that the crowds will come when UC wins consistently, and there was evidence that he might be right when 27,804 fans showed up at Nippert Stadium on Saturday for the Rutgers game. I have no doubt of that. If UC puts something on the field worth getting excited about, the fans will pack that place solid. I'd bet if the Connecticut game were at home that you'd see big crowds, and I'd expect sell-outs next year if they keep playing well...

Is this a Cincinnati insult?
No, it's in south-eastern Ohio: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=athens+ohio&ie=UTF8&z=6&ll=39.993956,-81.430664&spn=7.286556,21.467285&om=1

Is this a Cincinnati insult?
Well, he's talking about his own experience, and if I remember right, he's in Wilmington? Wouldn't be surprise to see a ton of OU applicants from there...

Do you mean the noise of the highway agitating the dogs is a concern? Or do you mean the noise of the dogs agitating the neighbors is a concern?

Cincinnati: Walnut Hills - Volterra Condominiums
Regarding the First Fisher project discussed above (you can go here and scroll down for previous discussion), here's the map again of the lots First Fisher owns: ...well, here's what it looks like now from the St. James side: ...and from the far side of St. James, for context (with a forumer and soon-to-be forumer-in-law in the foreground for scale): ...really makes you wonder if something larger isn't afoot...like maybe an access road, and the units facing the new road, like Sharkey Lane? Seems like an awful lot of clearing just for units right up against St. James and Kemper Lane...

Cincinnati Reds Discussion
...and rumor has it that we're going to sign Mike Stanton...and, of course, the move is being trashed by commenters on RedLegNation and RedReporter - I'm shocked! Anyway, here's the story: Reds reinforce bullpen with Stanton Ken Rosenthal / FOXSports.com The Reds, moving to reinforce their bullpen, have reached agreement on a two-year contract with free-agent left-hander Mike Stanton, FOXSports.com has learned. Stanton, 39, pitched for both the Nationals and Giants last season, finishing with a 3.99 ERA in 672/3 innings. After getting traded to the Giants on July 28, he filled in for injured closer Armando Benitez, converting eight of 11 save opportunities. The Reds lack an established closer on their roster. Right-hander David Weathers, the club leader with 12 saves last season, is a free agent. Left-hander Eddie Guardado likely is out for 2007 after undergoing elbow-ligament transplant surgery. The Reds are expected to announce the signings of both Stanton and free-agent shortstop Alex Gonzalez this week. Full story at http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/6188014

The Ohio State University Buckeyes Football Discussion
I'd imagine OSU has a much better chance against any other team out there - but man, talk about a historic game if they make it a rematch...with 50 days to prepare? And this rivalry? Man, that'd be something else...
