  1. They finally played a complete game!
  2. I'm talking about all throughout the game. The pan shot was at the end, though, so I'm sure people moving down just made it look bad. But it looked worst during the first quarter - we were guessing folks were watching the end of the OSU game, because it seemed less barren as the game went on - but it still looked awfully bad. Except for the game - that was great!
  3. From the TV, it looked half empty. In the fourth quarter, the announcers even commented on it, and the camera did a big panning shot of the stands, and it really did look half empty.
  4. One out of every 100,000 central Ohioans die crossing the street? Is that annually?
  5. While most people were clutching to the teets of OSU...I went to cheer on MY team. GO BEARCATS!!!!! From the look of the stadium, you could have brought another 10,000 people with you and there still would have been empty seats...that was really pretty embarassing...of course, I wasn't there myself, but then I've never really been a big Bearcat guy...

Complaining is the default mode for the really intense fans, I guess. Reading this Bengals forum you'd swear we were down by 30 points, when we're actually up by three...it's really insane. I mean, we ain't looking brilliant by any means, but they make it sound like we're getting blown out or something...just nuts.

Everyone on the blogs is bitching about this, but they were still complaining about the Arroyo/Wily Mo Pena trade in June and July. Honestly, I have yet to see a trade that wasn't bitched about. I mean, we picked up Brandon Phillips for nothing and half the bloggers/commenters were still bitching...

Marietta was the capital of Washington County, yes, and that was the first county organized - but it wasn't capital of the Northwest Territory. At least not from anything I've read...

LincolnKennedy - thanks for the clarification/correction on the capital issue. I did a bunch of reading about it this morning - fascinating times, no doubt...from what I saw, St. Clair actually formally established Cincinnati as the seat of justice for the Northwest Territory - so "first capital" doesn't even have to be inferred by where he hung out - it was actually declared so. Of course, the thought that this ESPN guy had any inkling of all of this - or that, if he did, it was what he thought folks would pick up on - that seems dubious to me. My theory? Dude had a clever thing to fill in a box with - "ooo, the Upper Penninsula is hardly even Michigan! Hmm...now what the hell can I put on the Ohio side of the box? Hmm..." What do you mean by "closer to home"? Do you mean the cities are more similar? Because obviously, Bloomington is 20+ miles further away than Columbus, and at least an hour longer of a drive because of all that time spent on 46. And really, Columbus is only another 10-15 miles further away than Lexington...so I'm guessing you mean the cities have a similar feel?
  10. C-Dawg - you think calling a guy for a helmet-to-helmet hit on a QB heading out of bounds is a questionable call? Honestly, you amaze me sometimes...

You are a sick and evil man. And furthermore, you probably giggle when you see a smoker who has to haul his ash outside to smoke...(ha!)
  12. Ah, thanks for that information - I'd never heard of that act. It's the Jeanne Clery Act, passed in 1990, amended up through 2000. Here's a link to a page about the Clery Act. Regarding the timely warnings part, is says that schools: ...shall make timely reports to the campus community on crimes considered to be a threat to other students and employees described in paragraph (1)(F) that are reported to campus security or local law police agencies. Such reports shall be provided to students and employees in a manner that is timely and that will aid in the prevention of similar occurrences. The crimes described in (1)(F) are: (i) of the following criminal offenses reported to campus security authorities or local police agencies: (I) murder; (II) sex offenses, forcible or nonforcible; (III) robbery; (IV) aggravated assault; (V) burglary; (VI) motor vehicle theft; (VII) manslaughter; (VIII) arson; and (IX) arrests or persons referred for campus disciplinary action for liquor law violations, drug-related violations, and weapons possession; and (ii) of the crimes described in subclauses (I) through (VIII) of clause (i), and other crimes involving bodily injury to any person in which the victim is intentionally selected because of the actual or perceived race, gender, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity, or disability of the victim that are reported to campus security authorities or local police agencies, which data shall be collected and reported according to category of prejudice. **************** So "attempted aggravated robbery" isn't on the list and need not be reported - "attempted" anything isn't on the list - but I certainly can understand why they would report it anyway. But man, it sure seems like it does nothing but feed the fear, and maybe make it more dangerous on campus - if campus were filled with people at all hours, that'd be a lot different environment than a deserted campus...
  13. You have a link to the full list, by chance? Would be interesting to see them all ordered up... Congrats, by the way!

Very cool how the focus is super sharp at just that one point - right at the ash-end of the cigar...then everything softens up...loads of movement here...very nice!

By 1806, Ohio was a state... I thought Marietta and then Chillicothe were the capitals of the Northwest Territory - I don't remember Cincinnati being a capital...can someone show me where I'm wrong? My assumption is that I'm the one in error here, because I don't know my early Ohio history very well at all...
  16. OK....I'm not even gonna touch this one.... Entendre not, lest ye be entendre'd...

Well, the one to the left is just the Gilbert Avenue Viaduct, not really a highway, but yeah, still an inhospitable chunk of real estate.

Yeah, that's the old Eggleston off-ramp they used during the Ft. Washington Way project...wow, that's cool...
  19. I'm a freak...I love the arch, and really dig St. Louis...sorry, folks! I must suck...

Smoking was banned in most public places in Ohio by a 58 percent vote in favor of Issue 5 on Nov. 7 leaving no "if," "and" or cigarette butt. GOD, PLEASE MAKE IT STOP!!!!!!!!
  21. "This is a revenue-neutral agreement," Walsh agreed. How do you take $40MM today, and have it only turn into $54MM in 22-16 years? That's revenue neutral? I'm sorry, only if your cost of capital is somewhere around 1.5%. Which it ain't. If the CPS had to pay 5% for its money, it could take the first two year's worth of $10.5MM payments, blow it all on puppies and flowers, and then it would be a break-even deal. Or it could build itself a $21MM jail and charge the county to house its own truants there! the school district wanted to be a good neighbor but also because the district hopes the agreement will pave the way for future agreements allowing the schools to use the county-owned stadiums - possibly for sporting, band or other events ...I wish I had neighbors who would loan me millions of dollars at 1.5% interest, I can tell you that much...
  22. Ivan Boesky and Michael Milken are so with you on that...
  23. My wife and I took some classes at UC a couple years ago, and we're still on the campus-wide mailing list. I've been getting all these emails lately from Greg Hand about all this crime on and around campus - a guy who's robbing folks on Clifton between UC and the gaslight, etc. Today I got this one: At approximately 8:00 PM on Thursday, November 16, 2006 a UC student was confronted by a suspect on Campus Green near the fountains between Lindner Hall and Morgens Hall. The suspect demanded money and when the victim reached for his wallet the suspect became agitated and poked the victim with an unknown object then fled the scene. No money was taken and the victim was not seriously injured. The victim was unable to provide a detailed description of the suspect. UC Police are investigating this as an attempted aggravated robbery. If you have any information about this offense please contact the UC Police at 556-1111. You may remain anonymous and receive a reward for information that leads to an arrest by calling Crime Stoppers at 352-3040. WTF? I mean, really, are they going to send out an email every time someone bumps into someone else on campus? Is this supposed to make us feel safe? I mean, yeah, teach kids how to think about safety, and give alerts when there's a special problem, but a dude was asked for money and then poked. And 35K people are warned...
  24. OK, that makes a hell of a lot more sense than the quotes in the article. From the sound of the article, the argument was, "you want to shut Walnut Hills down because we're successful." Obviously that's bullshit - nobody would argue that. And then it was further buffered by talking about just how good they are - which doesn't address the point. But the email is more thorough. It asserts that there's a tipping point between 1400 and 1800 students - it can offer programs and classes and services at 1800 students that it cannot offer at 1400. I wish they'd have fleshed that argument out a little more thoroughly, because that is a crux here - in the email, it's just asserted; I'd love to see some numbers and examples to back it up. And secondly, it seems to say that Walnut Hills is losing more students than the other targeted schools. Of course, I can't tell from this email if that's because it was bigger to begin with - like, if 32% of the students in those five schools currently go to Walnut Hills, then WH losing 32% of the enrollment is not an unfair targeting at all. It may be unwise policy, but it's not unfair, as implied. And thirdly, it explains that Walnut Hills is getting the short end of the stick because it happened to be in a later phase of the CPS master plan; now, since there's obviously no going back and revising Phases I and II, I'm not sure that this is a strong argument for anything other than holding those responsible for poor judgement accountable at the next round of elections - I mean, we are where we are today either way - but still, it's a logical explanation for how we got here. Do you (or does anyone) know any details/examples about how 1400 is radically different from 1800, or about the other schools that are getting coddled at Walnut Hills' expense? Or am I all wet here?
  25. So what exactly are the parents demanding here? That the School Board create children or something? Maybe bus them across town to fill in the ranks of students? Or maybe there's plenty of kids, and they'd rather see someone else's neighborhood school closed down and the kids sent to Walnut Hills? Seems to me that planning your facility capacity around the expected size of the student body would hardly "decimate" anything. I'd be interested to know the thinking involved from someone who believes otherwise - anyone out there familiar with the other side of this argument?
