New York Times chicanery, saltimbancery, childishness & Ohio diss
I honestly thought saltimbancery had something to do with thin slices of veal, with prosciutto and a wine sauce, maybe some capers...yum.

Cincinnati: New Hamilton County Jail
You're right, being against putting criminals in prison is a very poor characature of the opposing viewpoints. I was more saying that in exasperation, and it was hyperbole. But saying that cops are busting people on bogus charges - I can believe that's been known to happen. But the thought that it's any part of what's clogging up the works? That's the first time I've ever heard it, and it sounds utterly unrealistic - that was the main thing I was reacting to with the "are you serious" line.

Cincinnati: New Hamilton County Jail
So you voted against it because one contributing factor is the police arresting people on bogus charges, and those are the folks clogging up the works? Are you serious?

Cincinnati: Hillside Scenic Views
Here's the website for the Hillside Trust: http://www.hillsidetrust.org/ ...very cool. They've been around since 1972. Folks deed land to them or give them easements to prevent development on sight-line type property, which they then hold. Fantastic stuff...anything that lets me view more river - I'm all about that...

Cincinnati: New Hamilton County Jail
I was shocked by this one losing. Who can vote against putting criminals in prison? I would understand if Colerain went strong against it due to the Colerain location rumors, but elsewhere? What suburbanite would vote against a jail? And what Cincinnatian would be in favor of the status quo on jail space? I'll be interested to see the precinct-by-precinct numbers on this one...

Ohio Smoking Ban
I think we can safely leave the fucking Nazi's out of this already. That sound reasonable? Burning millions of people in ovens is not on the same moral ground as wanting smoke-free public spaces.

...I'd imagine this is true. And a good thing - it's been quite a while since a fair proposal was submitted to the people here...

Ohio Smoking Ban
I think most folks agree that: 1) There ought not be a Board of Dietary Review, to which one must submit his weekly meal plan for approval before he can receive his Junk Food Credit quota card ...and: 2) Even if heroin were legalized, rules against shooting up on school playgrounds are not the herald of the Iron Fist of the Imminent Fascist State. Somewhere between those two extremes, there's a line. Where ought the line be drawn? Personally, I think drawing it about where Issue 4 would have drawn it is more reasonable, and I voted appropriately. But I cannot believe this is some fundamental principles issue - this is about drawing lines in a gray area. And on such an issue, man do the "fundamental principle" arguments get tedious. I feel like I lost this one, despite not being a smoker anymore - but Jesus am I glad the debate's finally over. Nothing is more frustrating than people talking past each other...

What the hell is up with southern OH directly in the middle? Well, keep in mind all of that is just one district. It looks awfully stark when you (er...when I) limit the output to blue or red. And also remember that the right candidate (or the wrong opponent) can impact any election. Todd Book is a two-term incumbent, and is the Assistant Minority Leader, which makes him one of the highest-ranking elected Democrats in the state. And he was running against Tim Knauff, who lost a county commissioner race in 2004.

I just put this together...it's the R vs. D breakdown of the State House of Representatives by district. Not sure it adds anything to the discussion, but I thought it was interesting, and I spent enough damn time on it that I figured I'd post it...

Ohio: Casino / Gaming Discussion
I would suggest blaming the rest of the state for not voting for an issue that proclaims loudly and proudly, "Fuck Ohio" - it ain't tough to comprehend why folks voted against it. I mean, honestly, they wrote Cuyahoga County into the frickin' bill! Come on. Yeah, it's because we're all Bible-toting fun-haters down south. We god-bothering conservative Cincinnatians, who haven't even run a Republican for mayor in how many years now? Great analysis.

Not many admit to being in The Subway. Honest, it was for the cigarette machine! For a friend! Really! Actually, a small group of us stopped in there for a drink and to buy smokes, and my wife nixed the whole consuming-something-from-that-place idea once she looked around...yeah, it was an experience...
