The Cincinnati Photo Trivia Thread
Amen...that place freaks me out on a number of levels, including seeing garage doors carved into the side of the monastery...but mostly it's the horrific housing stock surrounding the poor building...ick ick ick...ick...

Cincy Parks Vol. 1: Piatt Park
Ah, very nice...can't wait for the rest of the series! And I believe they're the same Piatt's from Cincinnati as in Bellefontaine: http://www.heritagepursuit.com/Logan/LoganChapXVII.htm In the southwest part of the township is a little log chapel belonging to the Catholic Church. It had its origin somewhat as follows: When the Catholics first came to Cincinnati, the property-holders refused to sell them land, but Benjamin M. Piatt, who was a large property-holder then, was less hostile, and notified Bishop Fenwick, that he could have a building site not far from his residence. The intercourse thus opened up between the clergy and the Piatt family, resulted after a while in the conversion of Mrs. Piatt from the Methodist to the Catholic faith. When the Piatt family came to Logan County, Mrs. Piatt persuaded her husband to donate fire acres to the church. Meanwhile, from the Cincinnati Parks webpage: http://dynamic.cinci-parks.org/cgi-bin/parks.cgi/park_desc?park_id=101 Piatt, Cincinnati's first park, was given to the city by brothers John M. and Benjamin M. Piatt in 1817 "for a market space."

Cincinnati: Restaurant News & Info
RiverViewer replied to The_Cincinnati_Kid's post in a topic in Restaurants, Local Events, & EntertainmentYeah, it seems like hummus is always much more expensive than you'd expect...any of the Mediterranean places, it's always pricey. You'd think, it's a staple of 2nd World Cuisine, how can it not be cheap? But it ain't... A big, quality sandwich with fresh ingredients, and some good hummus, for $12? Yeah, I'd rather pay less than $12, and you could find a good lunch for half that price, but I guess it's not crazy for a frou-frou place...

Cincinnati Bengals Discussion
Tax assessor says 919 Sharkey Lane - but the map doesn't come up, and none of the online mapping sites show that street...anyone have a map showing where that is? I'm guessing back among Sinton or Fulton or something, but I can't place the units or the name exactly...

Greater Cincinnati Metro (SORTA) and TANK News & Discussion
Oh, wonderful...having spent years needing to pick up printed copies of Cleveland's RTA schedules back in the 90's, having all the routes available via .pdf is fantastic, but still, I've been thinking how much the current system blows... Just testing it now, and it's quite cool...they do have my address. Of course, one of the options for going from Government Square to my house is getting a bus to Court & Main, then transferring to another bus. Taking a bus three frickin' blocks? Yeah, right...but they give a number of options...very nice.

The Steps of Cincinnati
The Collins Avenue steps should be closing later this year. The CPD will be collecting crime stats from before and from during the closure and will report them to City Council in late 2011 to gauge the impact the closure has on crime, if any. So frickin' stupid. Are they ripping the steps up too, or are they just going to put little "Steps Closed" signs on chains across the top and bottom? 'Cause you know criminals respect such signs...Jeezel.

So what do we need to pay for? Are we talking about maybe some city liaison salaries, maybe some police overtime, maybe some bunting and flowers? Or what?

Cincinnati: Random Development and News
RiverViewer replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionI don't know whether this particular rule is good or bad (though I would bet it was implemented for a reason), but just because someone did something 40 years ago, and then stopped, doesn't mean you get to be grandfathered in...that doesn't mean it's a bad place to do business, it just means it has rules, and it enforces those rules...

Coffee Maker
Indeed...and some moron comes along and decides she just wants a half-strength pot. But there's only two carafes, and one's filled with decaf...aargh...and it sits on the burner, tastes like burned ass. But, again, it's hot, bitter and dark with caffeine... We used to have one of those Kurig things with the single-cup little fresh-brewed deals - man, that was great. But pricey, I guess - I think it worked out to $0.45/cup, which adds up for an office...

Coffee Maker
The cheapest-ass it gets is free office coffee. That's my daily weekday dose, and it normally blows, but eh, it's still coffee. Saves a stop on the drive, saves the hassle of making it at home, and it's still hot caffiene.

Here's an urban topic: Noisy neighbors
^Very true. Hell, you can buy a home without any money down if you want. A friend of mine closed yesterday on a home with an 80/20 mortgage. $500/month would buy you probably around $70K - $80K at today's interest rates, with taxes and insurance.

Here's an urban topic: Noisy neighbors
The breaker thing would have worked for me because the guy was debilitated drunk, and horribly embarassed the next morning...but I probably wouldn't recommend it with someone who might figure it out and get pissed...

Here's an urban topic: Noisy neighbors
Are you guys neighbors? This won't work in an apartment building, but I once lived in a three-family, and when a housemate of ours was out of town, his boyfriend came home drunk, blasting the stereo, 2am or so. Knocking on the door between songs worked - but the next step was going to be turning off the breakers to his apartment. His drunk ass never would have figured out what happened... (And then for bonus points, we could have turned them back on around 7:30am!)

Say, Uncle Rando, will we be seeing a Volume II soon? I'm sure school has got you busy, but this photo thread rocked, and I'd love to see more of our parks through your camera!

Cincinnati's Fountain Square: 10/18/2006
Thank you! Actually, it's not a pano at all - I just cropped out of a larger picture. Here's the original shot: It was an 8 second exposure, f/8...so I just cropped out the top and the bottom and ended up leaving the rest right around the original size...I was really lucky that nothing happened to reflect in window in the city-part during those eight seconds like it did above the city...

Great Seal State Park / Adena Mansion View, Chillicothe
Some shots of the view that inspired our state seal: The view can be seen on the grounds of the Adena Mansion in Chillicothe. There's a plaque at the magical spot, with a view that indicates someone hasn't pruned the trees in quite some time: The text: OHIO COAT OF ARMS This view of Mount Logan is said to have inspired the design of the coat of arms of the state of Ohio. Tradition relates that Thomas Worthington, one of Ohio's first two U.S. senators; Edward Tiffin, first governor; and William Creighton, first Ohio secretary of state, after an allnight party at Worthington's home, watched the sun rise over Mount Logan from near this spot. The sight impressed the leaders of the new state so profoundly that in 1803 a coat of arms was provided by law incorporating a basic motif of a demi-sun in splendor rising above a mountain. The sun represents the new state, the sheaf of wheat signifies agriculture and the bundle of 17 arrows denotes the fact that Ohio was the 17th state admitted to the Union. The Great Seal is composed of the coat of arms with the encircling inscription, The Great Seal of the State of Ohio, and is reserved for official use by the governor. THE OHIO HISTORICAL SOCIETY 1967 So, step back a touch, and we're in business: Mt. Logan and what, maybe Mt. Ives? Anyone? And I believe these are what ColDay called "the Three Sisters": Here's the view from this spot back to the Adena Mansion: Very pretty grounds: ...and one more of Mt. Logan: A word of advice for anyone interested in visiting Chillicothe - don't rely on the sign-posting abilities of Chillicothians. The only way I found my way to the Adena Mansion was through ColDayMan giving a cell-phone assist, and then good short-term memory of a grocery store clerk's rather involved directions...there is a visitor's center in Chillicothe, though I'd suggest making sure you have directions to it before you head out...oh, and while there is a $7 fee to tour the Adena Mansion, just going to the Great Seal view is free. Anyway, I definitely want to go back in the morning, maybe try to catch the view at sunrise...maybe some day...by the way, I took 28 there from Cincinnati, and wow, that was a very pretty drive...
