The Cincinnati Photo Trivia Thread
Ah, Rice Street - I see it now that you mention Christ Hospital...it's fascinating, so steep...I remember it from when I took the pictures of Inwood Village posted in this thread... As for the cemetery, it isn't Walnut Hills Cemetery, is it?

Cincinnati: Walnut Hills - The Overlook at Eden Park
So they've had some concrete walls where you can see the outline of the elevator shaft and what I've heard is the chimney system for the fireplaces, and more rebar sticking out of the walls...sorry, haven't gotten any pictures yet, but I'll try to take some soon. Anyway, this morning there were construction folk parked all up and down Luray, one cement truck down in the pit, another staged to back down in there, then two lined up and waiting...so, I'm guessing this is the foundation pour?

Do any of WLW AM700 Talk Show Hosts Live in Ohio?
Cunningham was born in NKY, but I thought he lived in Anderson...and I thought McConnell lived in one of the northern suburbs...but I certainly couldn't say that for sure...

Which part of which city would that be?

Cincinnati's Fountain Square: 10/18/2006
There's audio - pretty strong audio, actually. I don't know how good it would be if the place were packed, but you could definitely hear the news when I was there. Ah, I was really non-pleased by most of them - I do not like the focus on my new Canon PowerShot A620 - but a few with the fountain came out not too bad...I think the time has come to get a real camera, but that's gonna wait a couple years...anyway, the point was more to document what it looks like right now, not to present a cool photo thread...but thank you for the kind words!

Downtown Columbus from the past few years
Crappy camera? They look wonderful to me... I really dig the silhouette dude with the river and the buildings in the 2nd to last shot...very nicely done!

The Cincinnati Photo Trivia Thread
^Yeah, you're right...there's no reason the original church couldn't have been the rectangular box, and the sanctuary and everything got moved back with the addition. And actually, the stained glass windows to the sides of the sanctuary are just color globs, nothing like the rest of the windows...they did a good job matching the roof, but yeah, I bet you're right...

Cincinnati's Fountain Square: 10/18/2006
Here's a video (might be easiest to right-click and Save As, since it's 10M) that I took of the square last night - I just stood in one spot and turned a circle, trying to go slowly and keep still...sorry if it's shakey, but you can always pause it if you need!

Sorry for being shakey, but I tried to go slow enough that it isn't unwatcheable, and you can always pause it to see more detail...

Cincinnati's Fountain Square: 10/18/2006
Went down to Fountain Square yesterday to see things, and get some pictures, mostly for reference, to document this in-between phase, but also because I had a hard time picturing where a lot of the stuff we've been discussing is...anyway, without further ado... ...and a special added bonus...taken later that night from Prima Vista...scroll----->>

...and here's a crappy shot from my car this morning, just to put the church in its context...it's just north of Rockdale on Reading (google map here)

^Gotta try Purple Trillium sometime if you get the chance...it's a beautiful, award-winning red wine, and it definitely rocks...

The Cincinnati Photo Trivia Thread
Sorry, I forgot to give the answer...it's St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, and it's in Avondale, right on Reading...it sets back from the street a good ways, which is probably what threw folks off, because it is right on a main drag... Here's a pbase gallery showing the interior and close-ups of the stained glass windows...definitely a beautiful church... Oh, and regarding the addition - I'm pretty sure that section is original to the church, because the sanctuary is behind there...don't know what the deal is with the siding, though...here's a close-up of that section:

RiverViewer replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionWent downtown tonight to check out fountain square...Genius of Water, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways... I was just there, no water on, no events, it's just sitting there, and I saw "To the people of Cincinnati" with her standing out against the sky, and got chills. Absolutely amazing...God, I love this city...

Cincinnati: Abandoned and vacant buildings discussion
The most common complaint is that these types of runs might not lead to an arrest, but landlords could be held accountable for them. It's impossible to evict a problem tenant, they say, without an arrest or formal charges being filed. If there's nothing landlords can do about it, then I have no idea how they can be held responsible...this sounds like a bad, bad idea, at least as it's currently described...

OTR from the 17th Floor
I finally went from an inside room with a door facing a blank wall in the hallway, and now have a view of the drive between parking lots in our offices here in Blue Ash. Past the driveway, I have some hedges and the ass end of a one-story warehouse. And I have to keep the blinds partially closed or the whole room bakes, and the HVAC guys get pissed...gah. But at least I can see the weather...

RiverViewer replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionNicola's is doing great. His son Christian came to the states a couple years ago, and took a great place to a whole new level. It was ranked 4th in the city last year...it's always busy, sometimes even packed...they have wine tasting nights sometimes, hosting dozens of people...Nick will stay open late on a lot of symphony nights because Paavo will often bring a party of folks over after the show for a late dinner - soloists, guests, etc. The interior looks fantastic - much more up-to-date - the partner of one of the regulars is an interior decorator, who has done a lot to update the place, and will be designing the interior of Via Vite. I think it's a bit more pricey than it's been in the past, but the drinks are still very reasonable, and the food is really phenomenal. Had a roasted yellow pepper soup last time we were in there - just wow. Stuff you'd never think of, and it's so tasty... Ach, I could gush all day...

Since this has been dead for a while, how about we give a go at reviving it? Staying with the church theme:

RiverViewer replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionDude, that show was a sales job, and he submarined it. You could as easily say, "if you choose not to donate money because they don't put on a song and dance routine, then that proves his point." No, it doesn't - they were trying to sell folks on donating, and he spit on all of it.

Cincinnati: Downtown: The Banks
Wordsworth was a pretty big nature guy too. http://www.bartleby.com/145/ww134.html UP! up! my Friend, and quit your books; Or surely you'll grow double: Up! up! my Friend, and clear your looks; Why all this toil and trouble? The sun, above the mountain's head, A freshening lustre mellow Through all the long green fields has spread, His first sweet evening yellow. Books! 'tis a dull and endless strife: Come, hear the woodland linnet, 10 How sweet his music! on my life, There's more of wisdom in it. And hark! how blithe the throstle sings! He, too, is no mean preacher: Come forth into the light of things, Let Nature be your teacher. She has a world of ready wealth, Our minds and hearts to bless-- Spontaneous wisdom breathed by health, Truth breathed by cheerfulness. 20 One impulse from a vernal wood May teach you more of man, Of moral evil and of good, Than all the sages can. Sweet is the lore which Nature brings; Our meddling intellect Mis-shapes the beauteous forms of things:-- We murder to dissect. Enough of Science and of Art; Close up those barren leaves; 30 Come forth, and bring with you a heart That watches and receives.

RiverViewer replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionThat was definitely far worse...I mean, he decided, on his own accord, to alienate 40% of the potential donor base because of his need to express himself. I thought he was truly a self-centered bastard for that. Like taking food from the mouths of the poor, so he can self-actualize all over us. Selfish moron.

Cincinnati: Fountain Square: Development and News
RiverViewer replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionPrima Vista has such a dated decor to it...but man, you can't top that view. Anyway, yeah, Via Vite should be fantastic...very much looking forward to it...couldn't happen to a better restauranteur either - Nicola stuck with OTR all through the riots, the recession, etc...there was about a year there where he lived off the money he made from selling Pan E Vino in Hyde Park. We'd go in sometimes and be one of two or three tables the whole night. He could have packed it in at any point, moved back to St. Louis, or really gone anywhere, but he stuck with Over-the-Rhine through some very tough years... And now he'll have the single most premier location in the entire city...and, by the way, the name "Via Vite" is "Vine Street" in Italian...I hadn't caught that at first...such a great homage to the city...ach, I can't wait for May!

RiverViewer replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionLester - do you mean Prima Vista? I definitely see what you mean about more American Italian stuff - although they have a pretty big menu, with lots of less Americanized stuff available - like the saltimboca is definitely not a Fazzoli's-type item... What do you think of Germano's and Barrisi's? Aren't those the other two big name straight-up Italian places in town? Yeah, Nicola's is fantastic, my favorite restaurant in the city hands down. That's where we are for birthdays and anniversaries and everything...

Cincinnati: Fountain Square: Development and News
RiverViewer replied to buildingcincinnati's post in a topic in Southwest Ohio Projects & ConstructionThe country protects free speech, no doubt - which is why she's not in jail and not fined and not sued for what she said. Similarly, of course, the public gets to express its opinion - that the poem was silly, gratuitous, and reflective of pretty poor character to slip it in during what was billed as a family event. If she had gotten up during a political event and said all of this and more, Cincinnatians would have reacted like anyone else - it's political speech. But if Jean Schmidt had gotten up and trashed democrats, there'd have been an uproar - because it's inappropriate. It's a city celebrating its square, it's not a political rally. To my mind, the basic problem here is that Giovanni was just frickin' rude, that's all. It's just poor behavior, nothing more. Not worth raising a stink about - and, happily, not much stink has been raised - some folks were put off by it, and 3CDC apologized. Seems pretty appropriate and proportional all around.
